Great to see yet another classic aircraft saved. The York had that look of 'fitness for purpose' about it.

I appreciate your efforts in making this channel. I look forward to future developments. Your idea of short succinct episodes is excellent. As others have said, more of the finished project at a slower pace would really be appreciated. Regards Wayne, Sydney Australia.

Grew up on an airport with a stranded York. Couldn't fly out due runway restrictions. By the time they came off she was outdated. Dad took me on tour of her a couple of times and being a children it was huge and awe inspiring. The old girl became the victim of vandals and was destroyed by fire. A very sad ending to a great aircraft.

My father was posted to Malaya in 1955 and my Mother, accompanied by me and my younger brother, flew from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur in this aircraft. I remember how hot and humid it was while flying with constant drips of water falling on me the whole flight. A never to be forgotten experience.

I can remember flying over Lasham when this was stored there with the Ambassodor and a 707. I also remember (going back a veery long time) seeing them flying out of Heathrow and Gatwick.

I slept in that aircraft!! While it was at Lasham it was used as a “dorm” for Boy Scouts while they were in gliding school at Lasham. So good to see it restored!

I still retain the image (while travelling the then old Bath Road) alongside 'London Airport' and seeing a Dan-Air York very close up on a taxiway. Maybe it was this one.

I remember AVRO York's operated by Skyways at Stansted, when they taxied past one the ground shook. That was about the year 1958. About that time there was a fuselage on the north side of Handley Page's Radlett aerodrome, at that time I thought it to be a Lockheed Liberator. And also I seem to remember seeing a Miles HDM at Blackbushe. My late father, who served in the RAFVR during WWII, in the early years as an instructor on the DH82a Tiger Moth, about 1943 Dad had the occasion to fly at Desford the Reid & Sigrest 'Snargasher' a light twin that flew like a lorry load of bricks. He ended the war firstly bombing in Halifaxes of 158 squadron, then after VE day he flew Stirling's to Karachi

That was the first aircraft I worked on when I joined the D.A.S. The cargo area was badly corroded , mainly due to the fact that she had, at some time, been used to transport animals (inc. Elephants) ...and these did what animals do, which didn;t go well with Aluminium.. Stripping the paint was a nightmare.
@mothmagic1
@mothmagic1 7 месяцев назад
She actually did many sorties flying bagged salt during the Berlin air lift years. Far more likely to have been the cause of the corrosion.

Thanks for the picture of the prototype Lancaster, retaining the central fin from the Avro Manchester. A great video (although I'd suggest you needed to mention a little of the Manchester history). Pleased I've found you. Definitely now subscribed 👍
@rickbear7249
@rickbear7249 9 месяцев назад
Correction, well done for mentioning that the fin was added later than the prototype. I'd assumed it was a carry-over from the Manchester design. In retrospect, as the York was a development of the Lancaster, I'm an idiot for thinking that 😂. But it is interesting that the fin (introduced AFTER the test flight) appears to be an old Manchester central fin. I learn something new every day. Thanks again.

The Scout Association had an air activities centre at Lasham and ran courses for Scouts in gliding and Parascending. For many years, the York was loaned by Dan Air to the Scout Centre and was used as a bunk house by thousands of Scouts. During that time, it was also used as a spares source by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Eventually, as it's own historic significance was recognised, it was trundled back to Dan Air's base and was replaced at the Scout Centre by one of the retired Comet 4's.

Good episode. Thank you. It would have been a nice touch to briefly mention the timber trusses supporting that hangar roof, especially since they go back to WW1 RNAS, RFC and RAF days. A caption would have sufficed. How many people are aware that any of the WW1 military aircraft hangars still exist?

Thanks, Interesting stuff. Very brief but succinct ! I am keen to hear about the Beaufighter sitting there without engines ( Hercs’) in your intro. Surely those much anticipated engines from the antipodes are available by now ?? Now that is an important aircraft and did a lot of good work both for RAAF and RAF . Some flew until the early sixties, but no engines available ??? or is it they are all frightened of sleeve valvers ? What is going on, can you tell us ?

Interesting subject. Thanks for posting. You asked, Soo... Your presentation/narration is a bit too rushed, rapid fire, for it to be enjoyable. Maybe slow down about 10%. Also, thought there might be more information on the actual restoration or more shots of the finished aircraft.

Good advise. I used to be a film and video producer and, in later life, I do a lot of public speaking. ALWAYS allow time to say your words, THEN (at least) the same amount of time for your audience to digest your words, before moving on. For you, it'll seem like slow-motion, but is essential for your listeners. Just one of the tricks of the trade. BTW, you'll notice something similar with any text you display on screen. Too often it's there and gone before we can read it, especially if there's also a voice track to listen to. Just take it s--l--o--w and you'll get it perfect. Thanks

@whtalt92 8 месяцев назад
@@rickbear7249 I will then. Never. Couple of reasons: only 2 extant, engine & parts availability, CAA rating, and insurance. I'd love to see it fly too, but someone will need to foot the bill for that additional 4-5 years of airworthiness resto and then all the above items.
@rickbear7249
@rickbear7249 8 месяцев назад
@whtalt92 you still can't say "never", even if someone in the future has to build an aircraft from the ground up (as is too often the case with a so-called "reconstruction" of a Spitfire) or with the Mosquito aircraft that have been built. You can never say "never".
