The Office crafted a lot of cringe situations during its run, but maybe none more so than "Scott's Tots", which sees Steve Carrell's Michael Scott promising college tuition to a class of high school seniors. In this video, I try to break down what works so well about season 6's darkest half hour.

I’m not gonna lie and I say this as a college student, but why the hell did the students just assume a random man would pay for their college tuition, and also not have anything to fallback on with scholarships and student aid 🤦🏻‍♂️. Like it’s not all his fault but cmon they should’ve thought ahead

Something a friend pointed out to me recently is that their educational futures (at least right after high school) are more screwed than we realize because you can almost guarantee that none of these kids applied for financial aid. They just assumed a wealthy businessman was going to cover everything
@murray1978

I never thought of that. I wonder what the parents said to Michael. You can see them in the background in the classroom. I always wanted to pull this stunt with my nephew's class. True, I hated that episode when I saw it on Netflix but I don’t think Michael was an asshole. He just wanted to make Phyllis’ wedding fun and a good experience. Dinner party is far more hilarious then cringe. Scott’s tots doesn’t do anything for me because the situation is so contrived like it was purposely written to be one of the worst things Michael ever did instead of the cringe organically unfolding out of his personality like Diwali proposal, Date Mike, etc.
@4ndytrout46

i think the worst part is how the school glorified michael’s promise, by naming rooms after him and creating a musical to thank him. in that way, they almost treated him like a messiah of sorts. i would probably be able to tolerate it more if the students didn’t honour him so much

@@nont18411 You could argue that it is even worse in Michael's case: Unlike a lot of politicians, he had good and honest intentions, which he would have kept if he had been able to, but instead of owning up to his mistakes as early as possible, he simply played pretend and strung those kids along. The Kids are partially too blame as well though, since a quick research would have unavoidably yielded the result that Michael can not possible make enough money with his lower management position at a chronically struggling paper company to pay their tuition.

I gotta be honest, I can stomach the Scott’s tots part. I used to skip this Episode, but now I can actually watch it and laugh. I do skip over the b-plot though, with Jim being attacked by the office and Dwight sabotaging him. That’s a big thing that bothers me about Jim, HE DOESNT STAND UP FOR HIMSELF and it’s so frustrating. He can EASILY explain himself and the situation but no, he stands there all dumb struck and stumbles over his words. I guess it can be pretty rattling when the whole office is attacking you, but he just stands there and take sit like a bafoon. I dont know.

Personally I love the b-plot bc Dwight FINALLY gets back at Jim. I think Jim doesn’t stand up for himself bc he is not used to being disliked so to me it was a perfect prank from Dwight to Jim.
@tomh.2405
@tomh.2405 3 года назад
I think what you're not appreciating about Jim is that his combination of intelligence and diffidence is a great setup for comedy. I think of his type of character as the "only rational person in the room who can't be heard because everyone else is so determined in their lunacy" type. He can see an approaching train wreck, but he's helpless to stop it. A beautiful example of this is the episode in which it comes out that Michael is dating Pam's mom; if you get the chance, watch it again, and pay attention to the whole extended setup, how Jim pulls out all the stops in an effort to head off the looming disaster, and still fails. Krasinski in this role actually reminds me a little of Bob Newhart, and that's a high compliment.

That’s what Roger Ebert called the “idiot plot”...it’s a sign of weak writing when an entire plot hinges on one or more characters acting like a total idiot for the story to work. Ex: Jim (who is otherwise very smart and quick on his feet) could have/should have quickly and easily explained himself and/or picked up on how Dwight was messing with him. If he wasn’t inexplicably a total idiot for one episode, the plot would’ve fallen apart in 5 minutes.

Peacock (Free): "Watch The Office seasons 1 & 2 -- plus thousands of hours of movies, TV shows," yada yada yada. Peacock Premium ($4.99/month w/ads): "Unlock every episode of The Office, plus extended cuts with never-before seen footage & deleted scenes. Also get access to..." Peacock Premium Plus ($9.99/month w/no ads): "All of The Office, and everything in Premium, without ads." Peacock is literally The Office streaming service, with some bonus content like 30 Rock.

I hated when Michael had to tell the kids. It's just so painful and heartbreaking because I feel for those kids believing for years they would get to go to college and having it taken away. So many of them must have gone home and cried believing their dreams gone forever because of this man. It is honestly the worst thing Michael does...which is saying something. Dwight trying to get Jim fired is the opposite to the main storyline because it builds up tension, but relieves it by having the plan ultimately backfire. It goes beyond a simple "prank" since could cause Jim to lose his job, where Jim has a family to take care of, and it's very satisfying to see David reconcile with Jim with Dwight knowing the plan failed. I am always confused by the office's willingness to accept Dwight's plan as true. They believe Jim to have made himself employee of the month, gave it to Pam and even had a cake with his face on it. None of those things are really a "Jim" move, so it's strange when everyone just believes it. However, they have shown to be oblivious to things before. I would have enjoyed it if the plan was revealed to the office or even Jim, so they/he would know what was happening.

scott's tots just hits you with how cringe it is out of nowhere and it never stops....and its random..like why man...dinner party is funny to me cause it set up its conflict over late season 3 and early season 4..we know where this is going.. we see jim and pam try to not be invited by mike for a reason and it pays off so they got what they deserve and then some for avoiding it for so long but we see why they did not want to get invited...mike and jan hate each other and they got them to come as a cry for help in a way ...its obvious..so to me its just funny and kinda sad not cringe...except when jan starts dancing to the cringe song and tries to take jim's hand as michael just sits there watching this fiasco ..... ...that was so cringe but its one moment ....an the lines i can't prove it but I think she poisoned the food and also how can, you say that you know i have soft teeth, make up for that with how funny the way those are said is..

The darkest part of this entire episode is when it implies that because these specific “underprivileged youths” had a legitimate reason to believe they could go to college, they (unlike theirs peers) had no problem staying in school and getting their diplomas. When Erin essentially tells Michael as much at the end as if it were a good thing, it breaks my heart every time.
@anonony9081

The most genius part of this episode is that at the end of the day Michael actually feels good about what he did. You can see a genuine smile on his face when they're singing to him and telling him how great he is and even after he tells them he can't pay for their college he somehow got something positive out of the experience.

Being from the UK and having watched and loved the British version of the office (I am a big fan of the American version as well). This episode gave the same awkward feeling I got from watching the British version and I loved it! The American office has a lot of heart and balances the awkwardness in a great way, which is definitely exemplified by Micheal in this episode. I don't like Michael, not because he's stupid or selfish but because he's never really punished for it. I feel like often times he's even rewarded for it. And show frames him as the hero and he's everyone's favorite character which is just mind-boggling to me. This is one of my favorite episodes. I love the Jim's face cake punchline. And I actually think Erin's mention that this class graduated higher than their predecessors is significant. Ineptly, Michael inspired them; and then hardened them (which happens to all adults). Also it's not such a tragedy to have to apply for loans and grants. As one of the kids puts it, whenever he was tempted to join bad kids, he always thought of Mr. Scott and his promise. A lot of people survive on false hope, probably most of us. The only episode of the Office that I skip is Andy's Play, in fact I haven't watched more than five minutes of that one.
