This is the story of our baby Keane and his journey from birth until a year old. Keane had Hypoxic Brain Injury. They call it HIE (Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy)
Only by the grace of God, there was a cooling machine available at CHOC to treat his HIE. HIE typically occurs prior to or during child birth. It can be extremely frightening not knowing what this diagnosis means and I hope this video can give you HOPE of a positive outcome.
The cooling treatment has been shown to reduce inflammation in the brain, this is now the standard protocol for HIE babies. The diagnosis was made for him due to APGAR scores. And later, his heart monitor reading showed he was suffocating in utero. 😢
The team of nurses and doctors and therapists became so close to Keane and were critical in his recovery and our education of this diagnosis and the road ahead. We wanted to share our story so others down this same path can have hope and although we don't know what challenges lie ahead, we must know that God has the perfect plan. Keane is truly a blessing and amazes us everyday.

UPDATE: Keane was in OT, PT, Speech, ABA for the first 2 years. Early intervention is key. He was working on improving muscle tone, eating and chewing, sensory issues.
UPDATE: Keane is now 5 yo and starting Kindergarten this Fall! His cognitive skills seem to be strong. I still pray that nothing will show up in his future and worried that early exposure to radiation with the MRI on his 10th day of life doesn’t hurt him.
UPDATE: Keane is almost 7 yo now and he is SMART, FUNNY, SILLY, and wants to be a Mechanical Engineer when he grows up (hopefully not anytime soon!).
