The Amazing Spider-Man 2 REVIEW - The Mediocre Spider-Matt! 

I love how Spider-Matt puts his Spider-Man mask over his Spider-Man mask.

I really respected Beenox as a studio during the time they made Spidey games, because they CLEARLY appreciated the source material. There were plenty of little references to then-current comics or lesser-known characters in those games. How many games back then let you play as fricking POISON? And when I played Edge of Time and I found one of my favorite all-time Spider-Man suits, the Last Stand Suit. It's still one of my favorite costumes to wear in the Spider-Man PS4 game. Personally, I think Edge of Time had potential to be the best game in their lineup if it only had the time and budget, because the basic points of the story and the character interactions Beenox had there were pretty good.

This was the last major Spider-Man game before Activision lost the rights, then Marvel got them back, and licensed it to Sony, the absolute power gap of quality between these is night and day. You know what's weird, Yuri's first time voicing a Spider-Man wasn't the IOS version, or The Spider-Man Unlimited mobile game... It was in 2011's Marvel Superhero Squad Online, as Spider-Man Noir... What a journey into from being considered one of the great Spider-Man voices! lol

I think it's interesting that Spiderman gets "Menace" points for not showing up when he's considered a "Menace" by some because of him doing vigilante justice.

I had TASM2 on the 3ds when I was a kid. Recently picked it back up and completed the story in under 2 hours. I felt literally nothing afterwards.

This game came out when I was like 13 or 14, and I remember really liking it a lot at the time but haven't played it since. The one big gripe I had was that after a certain point in the game, enemies will set up giant laser walls inbetween buildings that prevent you from swinging. It was extremely annoying.

The Kraven storyline to this game is literally top 3 best Kraven storylines of all time and it deserves to be adapted into something far, far better. Which, given the recent Spider-Man 2 trailer, maybe they'll do.

Edge of time is still one of the most underated spiderman story and videogame dedicated to the character.

The story summary has me thinking Insomnia: hey can I study off your notes? Activision: yeah but just make it look different. Activision: wtf how did you get a higher mark?

Nothing will ever top spiderman 2 game with Tobey. I've never played a better pizza delivery simulator in my life.

The Hero and Menace system is just the guy who designed the Ballon missions in Spider-Man 2 punishing players who ignored his hard work.

The Spider-Matt theme song always pumps me up.

Main thing I remember from this game is Spiderman repeatedly screaming "YEAAAAAHHHHH!!!" and "WOOHOOOO!!!!" whenever I would swing and it annoyed the crap out of me to the point I muted my TV every time I had to swing around.

I liked this game, it was mediocre. The only thing I reeeeeeeeally disliked was the hero/menace meter. I maxed out the hero meter and if I had to stop a car or rescue a civilian when I was doing a story mission it would still go down incredibly fast. It really killed the nostalgia factor for me.

To give a bit of credit to this game, a lot of concepts are indeed reused for Insomniac's Spider-Man game. In fact, they were done marvelously better. This game really is the epitome of "good concept, horrible execution".

I think that the reason why Gwen isn't in the game is probably due to Captain Stacy's promise before his death. So maybe this game is trying to improve the story from the movie? They didn't shoehorn Peter's parents in the game since the story is already shown in the first movie. I guess.

The first game was at least decent with a pretty cool story and nice combat imo. This game was just a sadly rushed mess with so many repetitive gameplay and missed story opportunities.

I wish you could lower the FOV in insomniacs Spider-Man. I love the tighter FOV in this game, especially for swinging. Wouldn't want it all the time but would love the option

I remember in Spider-man 2 that I could switch between the normal swinging and being able to use the left and right triggers to swing.

I still remember the cinematic point to point traversal system in this game was super rewarding, I actually missed it in PSpider-Man (even though that still takes the cake due to the awesome depth.) One of my favorites from the Beenox era for sure!

Fun fact, the PS3 version of this game is one of the few with a blue banner, instead of black, on the top of the box. Sony played around with this in 2013 and 2014, then went back to the black banner later. Other notable titles with the banner include Drakengard 3 and Mugen Souls Z

I actually really enjoyed this game when it came out. It had the best web swinging at that point and i thought the story and villains were all cool, not to mention great costume selection. Whats funny is ive only ever seen 30 mins of Amazing Spiderman 2 but i 100% this game lol. Had it on ps3, and besides some small bugs here and there and long load screens it ran fine!

I remember when this game came out, I loved it. I beat it in about a day. My favorite part was the suits. As this was really the first time I could play as Miles Morales or at least wear his suit. I recently bought all the spiderman ds games because I've really been wanting to experience some spidey game nostalgia and I'm thinking I might just have to buy this for my ps4.

I'm loving going through the Spider-Matt videos, though it did shatter my memories of Maximum Carnage (I remember it being so much better as a kid lol). Any chance of taking on Separation Anxiety? Or have you already and I've missed it?

I’m happy to see this game covered in a more positive light. There was a lot of give and take with this release, but I did enjoy it quite a bit for what it was. I spent so much time collecting comic pages… so many comic pages.

I think this game might have the best stealth system in an open world Spider-Man game. The enemies line of sight is really easy to gauge and the takedowns work really well. The biggest thing that bugs me about this game is how the random city events are integrated. I hate that they have to be “activated” then the game fades out, fades back in and that’s how the missions start. I think what makes city events cool in other is that theyre seamlessly integrated in the moment to moment gameplay.

I've not played this, but glad I nabbed it in a steam sale at some point in the past. I generally try to do so with anything I might be semi interested in given the way rights are looming like the sword of damocles over anything with a notable IP. I'll no doubt get around to playing with it at some point - that web swinging looks particularly fun.

Honestly, I think this game had a lot of good ideas, it feels like the developers wanted to make something on the scale of Insomniac's Spider-Man later, but didn't have the time or the budget. It's not great, but it feels like it REALLY tried.

They somehow made this worse than the first game.

I remember loving this game. Ran flawlessly on the Wii U. I hadn't played any of the other Beenox games, so I guess that's why the combat didn't feel tacked on. The only part I remember absolutely hating was the fire rescue missions. I just ignored them. Working the other missions kept my morality meter high enough that there weren't any consequences.

I remember when I first got this game I was just running back and forth on Oscorp tower and found a glitch that turned Spidey into a broken ragdoll.

I swear, with just about every new Spider-Man game, the web swinging is vastly improved. Miles Morales has the absolute best I've ever experienced. I can't wait to see just how much they improve upon it in Spider-Man 2

A 'Wha Happun' video on TASM2 would be great since Sony also had plans for a whole TASMverse that would've span over 10+ movies including a TASM4 and an Aunt May prequel spy thriller (no really).

Gwen is name dropped twice, once in the game by Aunt May, before you go save Max at Oscorp, and the other is a tie-in with the movie prequel comics that explains his second suit. He damaged his first suit from it getting torn up by a big a$$ fan. So Gwen made his second suit.

Man, you talking about the inaccessible retailer-exclusive skins made me think at how Arkham Knight had PS4-exclusive skins and content that is somehow STILL inaccessible to PS4 users even now.

That transition is amazing

The swinging was a case of me almost liking it but it always felt too, I don't know, digital? Like the height you swing at was relegated to distinct tiers or levels above the ground, if you shot out a webline in between a level you'd slide into one. Likewise if you released a web and shot another one on the same level, you'd just kinda continue your journey in a perfectly straight line. Its not BAD necessarily, but it's one of those things that once you notice it, you can't unnotice it and it throws the feeling of the mechanic way off for me.

This marks end of licenced Super Hero game era. When (relatively) smaller studios and/or budget was used for the game's development + having weird handheld/mobile spinoffs. Now it's either AAA console game (SP PS4, Arkham Knight) or mobile f2p stuff.

Haven't played the ps4 spiderman and likely never will but this web swinging feels near perfect. Once understanding it, which will be only a few hours in, you get to swing extremely fast with amazing physics

I will love to see a Spider-Man, that's basically, the 1970s Spider-Man, but as a video game or to unlock the 1970s Spider-Man costume and the Japanese one as well, I also a cameo of Stan Lee and oi Jack Kirby.

Can I just say that, while I am unhappy with how they handled Kraven towards the end, both his visual design and the scene where Peter visits him at his appartment are fucking amazing? I really like this take on the character. Too bad his "training of spider-man" that they talk about never actually occurs, and that he afterwards is quickly disposed of with a shitty betrayal and a lame bossfight. Also for sure, the whole "Hero or Menace" bar is a terrible idea, or at least one which was terribly executed. Feel like if there was more variety to the crimes, and actual unique events which you could miss, that would be a far better way to inscentivize players to actually check things out. It is hard to make a player feel "empathy" towards abandoned NPCs (when these NPCs are merely random pedestrians), but one thing players will care about is if what they lose out on is unique fresh content. Understandably providing that throughout a whole open world experience isn't exactly fesible though with the time limit and budget they were on. Hell, even Insomniac didn't fully deliver on that yet. Though Miles' phone app was leaning in the right direction. The missions just need to actually not like.. wait for you to arrive and actually do them. Last thing. On the topic of the webswinging, I must say I hard disagree with you unfortunately. I think Spider-Man 2 still trumps all the other systems, with probably Web of Shadows and Miles at second (the latter either tied or very closely behind) TASM2's system definitely has this sorta.. tactile feeling to it with the left and right trigger input, but the actual arc you travel isn't very greatly affected by where the web is actually spun, meaning it kinda loses that layer of complexity it could have added. You are perfectly fine to throw out a web exclusively from your right hand for the entire game and will still get any turn to the left done without issue. Idk. There isn't actually much wrong with the system I just think some of the other games offer more. Also I feel like the lack of a charged jump, sprint button, and the "hardcoded wallrun" allow for less dynamic movement. I might be alone in this, but I much more prefer how the Spider-Man 2 wallrun, even if it could be sorta messy and fucked up sometimes, allows for such a great variety of interactions simply through the way of how freeflowing and dynamic it is. TASM2 and PS4 with their wallruns that trigger automatically when you swing near a wall and which always make you travel at a consistent speed lack the feedback and possibilites that offers. Those TASM2 traversal web rush animations do be pretty tight tho, I won't lie. Anyway, I lost track of where I was going. Sorry for my obnoxious rambling.
