Peter Parker has had a significant number of love interests in the comics. His first "girlfriend" was Liz Allan, whom he fell for during high school in Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962). They eventually broke up, but they remained close friends over the years. Afterward, Peter got close with Betty Brant, who first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #4 (1963). They both fell in love while still in high school but eventually broke up, though they stayed friends as well. Later, when Peter attended college, he met Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man #31 (1965), and this was also around the time Mary Jane Watson was introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #42 (1966). Gwen Stacy is often considered Peter's first serious relationship, while Mary Jane became his most iconic love interest. In the Ultimate Universe, a reimagined and modernized continuity beginning with Ultimate Spider-Man #1 (2000), the focus shifted to Peter’s high school life rather than college. Characters like Gwen Stacy, Harry Osborn, and Mary Jane Watson were brought into the high school environment alongside Peter, making it a fresh take on his early years. In this reality, Peter did not date Gwen Stacy, though they were close friends. Mary Jane was Peter's primary love interest throughout much of the series. Peter died at only 16 in this reality so he never made it to graduation.

Well, as to Maguire's Peter being closer to the comics, something to bear in mind: Spider-Man is a phenomenally popular character who has been in print for near 60 years. Over that time, he been both written and drawn by a huge number of different artists, under several different titles, all with their own distinct style, story, and foibles...so differences in the movies and characters are pretty much par for the course.

Tobey`s closest to the original Amazing Fantasy Spidey with the whole idea of the organic webs and him being more personally connected to his villains coming from an unproduced James Cameron Screenplay written for Leonardo DiCaprio(The villains largely being more sympathetic than the Source Material came from the `80s and `90s cartoons), Andrew`s closest to Ultimate Spidey with a bit of the Spectacular Spider-Man Animated Series that was airing at the same time the Amazing Spider-Man Films came out on the Kids WB/CW Kids Network mixed in and Tom Holland`s more of the modern, more kid-friendly MARVEL Adventures Spidey mixed with the Civil War/Brand New Day Spidey.

Maybe the Tobey movies are closer to the books when it comes to the stories and the origin, but Garfield's depiction with him having fun and cracking jokes plus all those poses when he's in costume are pretty spot-on. And I'm saying this being a lover of the very first spider-man comics from the 60s who were written by Stan the Man himself. I will always have a soft spot for Andrew Garfield's spider-man therefore. His presentation hits me closer to the heart.

I really don't think the Raimi/McGuire movies are closer. McGuire's insane levels of inability to have normal human interaction was far beyond anything that the comic book version of Peter ever had, even when he was still a uber-nerd in high school. But as the comic book version of Peter graduated from high school to college, (only 31 issues into the comic), he was a lot more sociable and was closert to the portrayal given here. As a long-time Spider-Man fan since long before the Raimi/McGuire movies, I really hate McGuire's portrayal of Peter.

@@jlhanlon1980 and how does this correspond with what I wrote ? I'm quite aware of Gwen being before MJ (and Betty Brant being his first ever love interest) and that he built his own webshooters (I read all Spidey silver-age comic books from 1963 up until the 70s) and it doesn't contradict anything that I said in my comment.

Andrew Garfield is a spiderman fan from heart. Whem he was announced, he showed up with a trashed spiderman costume and made a beautiful speech abou how spiderman is important to him and he wasn't joking. His depiction of Peter Parker humour and complexities is perfect even in this run, wich draw inspiration from an alternative origin story that most fans don't really like, but we all ignore that because of how delightful is to watch Andrew play spiderman. Also, the way spiderman moves and fights is actually his idea, he talked to de stumteam and explained how Spiderman is suposed to act. In terms of storytelling acuracy, Marc Webb's spiderman are less faithfull to the most praised spiderman runs, but Andrew Garfield is the perfect spiderman. And this is not Webb's fault, Sony pushed interfered a lot in this one, much more tham in Spider Man 3 (whem they obligated Raimi to use Venon). Marc Webb isn't just a great director, but a great writter. He wrotte and directed 500 Days of Summer, great movie, and this is the reason he was choosed to TASM movies, because he knows how to develop romantic comedies. Till this day we still expect Sony to make a new TASM movie, but with no interference to give Andrew a chance to shine. He absolutely deserves.

For a long time, media preferred to skip from Gwen to MJ because Gwen was literally best known for two things: Being one of Spidey`s first two love interests and being dropped off a bridge by the Green Goblin. Comics fans had a joke for years:"In comic books, no one stays dead except Uncle Ben, Jason Todd and Gwen Stacy".(And go figure, Jason and Gwen were later brought back to life anyways and made heroes in their own right or an anti-hero in Jason`s case but then again he kinda was to begin with compared to Dick and Tim which was a big part of why fans hated him so much they voted for him to be killed off!)

36:04 People who say Tobey Maguire or Tom Holland's Peter Parker are the closest to the comics clearly haven't read the prime Spidey comics. Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker is by far the most comic accurate-he's handsome, suave, sassy, and embodies the quick-witted, confident Spidey we know from the source material. It's just that many are unfamiliar with the actual comic version of Peter!
@butkusfan23
@butkusfan23 15 дней назад
I've read comics for decades, and I've read the ones that came out before I was born. Anyone that says either version- Tobey or Andrew- is more comic accurate than the other has not read enough comics. Andrew is great as the character and it's fairly comic accurate, but in the earlier comics the character was nerdy and quiet and much more Tobey-like. That, and SpiderMan is supposed to be an awkward nerd, not a cool skater kid. I would say they're both accurate for different reasons, but to say SpiderMan is supposed to be cool and handsome and that anyone that disagrees hasn’t read enough "prime SpiderMan comics" is the exact opposite of the reality. No offense.

As someone who grew up with the Raimi movies, and those are still my favorite Spider-Man movies, and some of my favorite movies of all time, Marc Webb's and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man movies are much more faithful to comic book Peter Parker and Spider-Man than either of the other live-action adaptations of the character. Raimi's is still faithful, but it's going for a more epic, extravagant, theatrical, heightened Shakespearean take on the classic early Spider-Man, while Marc Webb's Spider-Man is closer to the vibe of the character himself, entirely, throughout his history, just positioned in the 2010s rather than spread out across the 60s to the 2010s. I think a lot of people like to use the "Andrew is the best Spider-Man, Tobey is the best Peter Parker" just because someone said that somewhere once and it sounded good, but I don't agree at all. Andrew absolutely kills it as Peter Parker. He's the closest live-action Peter Parker adaptation by a mile. Like, that's just him. That's Peter Parker. Meanwhile, Tobey's Spider-Man is a pretty perfect translation of classic Spider-Man's vibe. But Marc and Andrew still get the energy for this Spider-Man just right. This angsty, angry teenager who can't catch a break. They just understood the assignment so well. I think the second one is even better, but that's an unpopular opinion, I guess. I don't necessarily think the Jon Watts movies get either of the two parts of the character down, but that's another subject.

The Amazing Spider-Man films with Andrew Garfield are thematically way more sinister, melancholic, and tragic than Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland's Spider-Man films. I love how tortured all the characters were in these movies. The villains are characters who were broken by unfair circumstances and chose evil, and the heroes are equally broken but choose to do the right thing in spite of the pain.

So as you saw in the comics, this is basically a different version or iteration of Peter Parker/Spiderman. Which is he is THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN that follows the storylines and Peter Parker from the earlier versions + The Ultimate Spiderman comic books. Where Peter Parker is not a super nerd or clumsy, he just a lone wolf/outsider who is super intelligent and loves photography. He can be awkward which shows on how he interacts with girls. But when he gets comfortable with a girl like he did work Gwen he’s very straight forward/direct with his feelings and affections. Oh and you probably already know cuz of all the comments, Gwen is Peter’s first love/serious relationship and she will always be special to him even though he ends up with MJ years later. These two movies is not as extravagant and very super hero kind of movie like Tobey’s Spiderman and even Tom’s Spiderman. But I think Andrew’s Spiderman has this very down to earth realness to it especially in the acting. People will have their preferences and opinions, however..I feel like I can relate with Andrew’s Peter/Spiderman the most. I also love his mannerisms/fighting style as Spiderman..he literally moves like an actual Spiderman. Also, his witty quips, banter, and jokes when he’s fighting bad guys is SOO GOOD!! I grew up reading the comics, watching Tobey, Andrew, Tom, and Miles Morales (Spiderverse). They all bring something to the characters and each movie has its own charm. But I have to say Andrew and Miles are tied as my number 1 followed by Tom and Tobey as close 2nd. It’s really close honestly, but there’s just something about Andrew’s portrayal that grabs my heartstrings.

In the comics, popular characters often have multiple titles. It's a bit confusing, but a very popular character like SpiderMan could have 2-3 different books with different titles, different authors and artists being put out at the same time. The stories won’t contradict each other, but the stories may be slightly different. It's one reason the MCU films (and Sony and Fox) have so many different versions of the characters, different costumes and storylines to pull from, etc. It's also a big reason us fans get so excited for the films, because we want to see which costumes get used, which storylines and characters from the comics get featured, we watch and listen for little callbacks to specific stories and events from the comics that non-comic readers might miss. It's hard to explain, but there are TONS of little things that the writers put into these films as a way to not just make a great movie, but also to give us comic fans something extra. It's a huge reason these films mean so much to us and make us tear up- not just because of the story being well-written, but because of all the little extras they managed to get into these films.

Good reaction! I don’t know if you seen or haven’t seen No Way Home at this point but I would recommend watching the two Venom films starring Tom Hardy (shows a different portrayal of the Venom character) 😊. Also with all these versions of Spider-Man on film, they all add or avoid things from the lore such as how in the comics, Gwen was Peter’s first love before he got with Mary Jane. The Tobey films focused on MJ right away because by that point, the two were together in the comics & was massively popular. Peter is known to making quips/jokes anytime he fights so Andrew did a good job there. Tobey’s Peter does joke a bit but they never focus too much on that part of his character but that’s not a issue. Also Peter getting his powers and losing Uncle Ben is pretty much his canon backstory in every media. Tom Holland’s films skipped the origin because everyone knows it by heart now. :)

Cristy! This movie did it for me because of Emma Stone. I know you said you like her, but I don't know if you'll be able to relate to this. I find very smart women extremely attractive. Unlike MJ, Gwen was brilliant and strong, which makes my knees weak. Of course, Gwen wasn't just the character. Emma Stone played this part perfectly. And you left in key scenes. Thank you! Which key scenes? When they were in school and Peter couldn't spit out what he wanted to do, Gwen says, "Yeah, either one." And she said it so fast and so spontaneously, I have to give kudos to Stone. On the balcony "Oh I'm in trouble" is one of my favorite lines in any movie. The last one puzzled me, as you had no reaction to it at all. In the classroom at the end, when Gwen is trying to be mad at Peter, he says, "Oh but those are the best kind." The camera zooms on Stone's face and she lets slip a strained smile, tries to hold it back, then can't help to just let out a big smile. I've tried doing that myself and can't do it believably. I think Emma Stone killed it with that scene. I'd never seen a movie with her in it, but this movie made me a big Emma Stone fan.

The reason my personal favorite Spiderman is Hollands, is because i always felt like Toby was perfect for Parker, but not so much so for Spiderman. Andrew was perfect for Spiderman (the smug, the humor), but not so much for Parker. Like Toby was always Parker and Garfield was always Spiderman. Holland for me feels like a good balance. Nontheless, i still enjoyed all iterations of Spiderman and Peter Parker and i'm glad to look back and know I witnessed the birth of all of them c': PS. my FAVORITE part of these 2 sagas of movies tho, is that in BOTH we see people come together to help Spiderman out. Its a feeling i don't think I ever got from watching MCU Spiderman.

The reason the love interest in these movies is Gwen instead of MJ is because in the comics Gwen was his first serious gf. He didn't meet MJ or Harry until he went to college.

16:40 - why Gwen instead of MJ? Leaving spoilers aside, both have been Peter's girlfriend at different times in the comics. Gwen was actually his first gf in the comics (MJ being introduced a couple of years later), and is a crucial part of a very important story in Spider-Man's life that the next movie will cover. The Tobey Macguire trilogy danced around this story but never actually did it. You'll see what I mean soon enough. The Lizard is another story that the Tobey Macguire movies was eventually going to get around to (Curt Conners being present there as Peter's college professor) but never actually did. Anyway, you'll soon see why Gwen is featured in this movie and not MJ; don't worry.

Tobey’s Spider-Man got the awkwardness and the wrestling origins right.. the stories match up to the comics well also (except Venom.. they botched that) Andrew’s Spider-Man absolutely nails the science genius Peter (he’s as intelligent as Banner or Stark but not as educated in the comics) Tom’s Spider-Man blends the two nicely while feeling like a teenager more than either one of them. Personally, I think there’s too much emphasis on Stark in his movies but that looks like it will change after Endgame

Hello Cristy!😊 Joey is funny.😆 He lays in bed like a person. "Bless u Joey". So, what happened is Sony had to keep making Spider-Man films to keep the rights from reverting back to Marvel. The way they did this was to keep rebooting the Spider-Man films with a different actor. If they had stopped making films for a time (usually between 3-5 years) Marvel would automatically get the rights back. These films were supposed to be a trilogy like the Sam Raimi films, but the third film never happened. I believe you said previously you were watching these films as you know it is required before "Spider-Man: No Way Home".😉 I think you just have the next Andrew Garfield film and you're there. I'll tell you about M.J. in the next film comments.😉 There are two types of water systems underground, they are "Drains" and "Sewer". Drains are an open system that deal with rain water. Sewers are a closed system that deals with waste, not normally accessible by people. Great emotional reactions to this well made film, Cristy!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I wasn't really a fan of the Amazing Spider-Man movies. I didn't like the direction they were going and the changes that were made to Peter. That being said, I think Andrew Garfield plays a better Spidey than Tobey. Also, in the comics, Gwen was Peter's love interest before Mary Jane Watson.
