@Nick it was a sv650s, with cams and a few other bits. This happened to me and I honestly thought I was going to die! I was racing another bike and at about 140mph I had the most violent tank slapper! I can’t describe it other than riding on a mechanical bull. I thought for sure I was going to die and I just held on as tight as I could and it eventually stopped. I’ll be 💯 honest when I say, I don’t know if I’ll ever have the balls to go that fast again and risk getting killed. I’m glad all these people survived.
@ihateeverything3972
@ihateeverything3972 2 года назад
Haha a bull is an amazing comparison. Glad you're all right man, yeah if you ever do decide to go fast again take it seriously. Read up. Like holding on tight, not a good idea. You don't want to tense up and accidentally restrict the bars from shaking. Trying to control it with muscle will hurt. Just remember, it's never what you do but how it's done. Anyone can go 140, not everyone can do it again and again and again. Prepare yourself, even if you ride within speed limits too man. Lotta times you need to emergency brake, swerve, find an exit slot etc. Just today some idiot in a Tacoma just randomly stopped in the middle of the road to idk, play with his dick or something and I tried brakes, not good enough but trained eyes find an exit slot. Even a plan b might not be enough, so yeah not gonna ramble on but be safe so you can ride when you're 70 years old, straight veteran.
@YarHarFD
@YarHarFD Год назад
You can tell how well your bike will handle high speeds by testing your steering at various points. Start at 60 and work your way up. With very little weight or input on the bars, give it a gentle nudge out of alignment (just barely) and see how long it takes for it to stabilize it self. As soon as it takes longer than like 1 second don't ever go above that speed.

A million crashes on a cheapo dirt bike, no big deal on the dirt usually. 3 drops on a Ninja 300. 1 pretty big one on a CBR600RR. I had a couple modified 750 triple widow makers in the 70s so pretty familiar with tank slappers. I've also had a lot of sport bikes since then and still have a couple along with a touring Harley. I don't know if it's from riding dirt bikes but any time I feel anything quirky going on with the suspension my ass immediately comes off that seat. Transferring almost all your weight from the seat to the pegs around 2' lowers the center of gravity significantly and will almost always stop wobbles or slappers instantly. If you don't do this without thinking just like counter steering it's a good idea to practice it until it is.

@jameshisself9324 Год назад
When you lower the front of your bike or raise the rear you are always tempting this outcome. Not every bike, not every situation, it depends on a lot of factors. One thing that can prevent it is steering damper at the right setting for the bike. A tank slapper happens at a specific frequency for each bike and situation, and even the same make/year/model can be different. Changing ride height, lack of service on steering head or swingarm bearings, crash damage, tire pressures, tire wear, body position, weight distribution (you will notice that many of these happened after wheelies or hard accelerations), many factors. Your bike is not a car, and a sport bike ridden at 150mph+ speeds needs maintenance like a jet fighter does. Long before something goes wrong, and eventually something always does.
@fanman4230
@fanman4230 Год назад
I've commented on this elsewhere, i had a regular tank slapper occur on my old trailbike, a Honda XL500RC. Luckily, wide bars plus locking my elbows into my body kept it under control. The front wheel was actually being thrown up off the road at around 65mph. Faster or slower it went away. I replaced the tyres with more tarmac friendly rubber and problem solved. It wasn't balance, it seems the tread blocks had deformed with regular road use, especially braking. I owned that bike for 10 years and never had the problem again. Not in all cases but most of the wobbles in the video were after wheelies when the wheel first hits the road, so i presume tyre deflection has a lot to do wih it.

I had this happen to me in 1990 riding a Kawasaki GPz1000RX, I was going around a left hand bend at 70mph when my front wheel hit a half brick in the road. The bars were yanked from my hands and I could hear them banging from stop to stop for what seemed like for ever. Luckily the bars stopped moving and I grabbed them and stayed on the bike, I could smell the burnt rubber from the front tyre. I know that 70mph was not that fast but the 1000RX was a 500lb monster!

Shouldn't let go of the bars when it's happening, but never fight it either. Just let off the gas, squeeze the bike with your legs like you're riding a bull so you're not thrown off, and let the front wheel figure itself out. The gyro effect and caster will eventually take over and straighten things out if you don't plow into something first.

I've had some really intense tank slappers, the worst was in 1979 I had just bought a detachable clear windshield for my new 1979 Yamaha XS1100 standard. I was testing it trying to find the best position to keep it at and the 3rd time I must have had it on uneven. Anyway it went into a major wobble like it was trying to kill me. Thankfully I didn't go down. Strictly luck not skill kept that bike up. When I got back home I boxed said windshield up and sent it back! I could taste the adrenaline for what seemed like hours after!

Simon said it right man. Give it more gas, it's more reliable and it'll fix the problem much quicker so you don't go a ¼ mile up the road slapping That's important by the way. There isn't always enough runway to let it ride itself out. I've had a tank slapper where I needed to get on the brakes relatively soon. I straightened her out quickly so I was able to apply brakes and slow down without crashing. Also, just wanna let yall know that it isn't uncommon for the whipping motion of the wheel to compress your brake pistons back. Do not be surprised if you lack brake pressure and you need to pump the brakes back up.

I'm surprised to see these guys survive worse death wobbles unscathed whereas there are others that didn't seem as bad but ended up way worse (one where some dude in China was doing a wheelie, going like 20 mph and then his bike started wabbling to a commercial truck on the opposite lane and then he blows up in pieces on impact, where his head is seen being flunged like 50 yards away on a dashcam), pretty scary and sad situations that can result from the death wobble, again I'm glad to see these guys survive their ordeal from what seems to be impossible.
@patrickmcmahon1110

It’s because of deceleration, the guy who hit the truck stopped immediately which is a huge shock to the body. These guys slid down the road and slowly decelerated, but if you don’t have proper gear sliding is gonna be pretty bad too.

I had my first tank slapped about a week ago. I think it was caused by fast acceleration in windy conditions. I say that because the whole time I'm full throttle in 2nd gear I can feel the front wheel sort of hovering about a quarter inch above the street. In 1st gear it just goes up in the air so I don't usually full throttle that gear. I'd say it's time for me to get a steering damper. I never needed one for my Honda CBR600, but my R1 has a ton more acceleration.

I had one of these 17 years ago. Hit a nasty bump at about 60mph and bottomed out the forks. Only I didn't save it 🤣 the lessons I learned that day was always wear the best protection you can and especially decent boots, no excuses. I was wearing sneakers that day (i know, but you've all done it) and one ended up over the hedge in a field, the other half way up my leg after my foot came out through the toe end . And my left foot nearly had to be amputated after it was almost completely sheared off. Compound fracture, bone came out of my leg. Tibia and fibia fractured at the bottom, ankle smashed to bits literally and my foot was hanging on by the skin. A gentleman who came to help sat there with me and basically held my foot on as I lay at the side of the road. The surgeons managed to screw it back together but I now have a fused/ no ankle. No more running, from 25 years old I had my ankle fixed at a right angle. I don't think people really think enough about the likelihood of severely injuring themselves riding bikes. The reality of living life with a bad injury really should be taken into account before you decide to go ride out without the proper gear.

I know it may be hard to do but actually when you have wobble like that my understanding is you are supposed to let up off of the handlebars at least pressure wise. Still have your hands on them, but let the wheel do it at once. Basically, what’s happening is your front wheel is a gyroscope, and when it wobbles it has gone out of balance, however, it is always trying to restore balance, and it will smooth itself out. It’s happened to me a few times.

Back in the early eighties I got caught at 112mph (indicated) during a test ride on a friend’s Kawasaki H2C triple. If I slowed, the nasty weave got ugly really quickly, but if I accelerated a bit, it eased. Frankly I was rather frightened. I tried a couple of things, rear brake, shifting weight, but every time it backed down to the sweet spot it started becoming violent. Hateful thing. I was on a dual carriageway so I had some room but there was traffic. I got it to where the weaving had calmed, braced my arms as tight as I could in to my chest (this one had the high US style bars on it) and slammed the brakes on as hard as I could, hoping to ram it down past the wobble speed to where it was happier. It sort of shook itself and flapped the bars violently then it was riding along as if nothing had happened, albeit at a more reasonable speed. For me it felt like a near-death experience. The bike was standard except for bars, double disc conversion and a set of J&R expansion chambers. I know those things have some nasty habits but that one had an attitude.
