I've never seen a "fire roll" before. Fascinating method. I learned something new!

Never seen this kind of way to start a fire, and I know many different ways. Thanks for adding this to my book of tricks! Great video!

It's a technique known as the Rudiger Roll aka Fire Roll, a technique taught to me by Boggycreekbeast. Check out his videos too. Here's my video on How to Fire Roll. Thanks! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8YP8LGyIkXI.html

Just checked out that video (and Boggy creek beast too), really cool stuff. I'm amazed it works so well, tried it as well today. Gone up to being my favorite way to start fire.

I stripped the fibers from an 18" yucca leaf and reverse wrapped it into a 12" cordage. It was such a short cord, but it worked well for a bow drill bow string. I broke out the same little River Birch set we made last week. After I put a toggle in each end of the cord, attached it to the bow, and put 2 wraps around the spindle, LOL! I only had 5" to work with for the stroke... Still, though, it worked beautifully. Then I took the Yucca cordage bow string and broke it down into separate fibers and made a fire roll and fire with it. Also, I gave 3 crucial tips to achieving ignition with the fire roll technique... Come see how it all turned out. Please SUBSCRIBE at the end of the video. Thanks!

Amazing what 1 leaf can do. Have a happy new year David.

That's the way I was thinking about it.... About 60 strands of Yucca Fiber... They were interesting to my coworkers to see them transformed into a cord that we couldn't break, they were used for bow drill string, they were used up in a fire roll, and they made a video that will entertain and educate hundreds. Yep, amazing what 1 leaf can do. Thanks!

Man, I live in Arizona; I've played with yucca before (and it does make great cordage, though I've always wondered if you could treat it like flax and get some decent cloth out of it) but never tried it in fire-making. Considering that it's all around me, I think I should be ashamed not to try this! So I have a new project this weekend. ^_^

Wouldn't make good clothes. Fibers are brittle and break when they dry out.

If I thought it could grow in the total shade I have around here, I'd plant me some. Thanks!

The yucca pulp, once dried, makes good tinder.

I didn't know that. I do know that it won't fire roll easily... and that birds like to use it in their nests. Thanks!

Would you know what Yucca species that is, as there are quite a few around. Would it be 'elephantipes"?
@DavidWestBgood2ppl

IDK. I think they all work.

Did you know that if you use the fibers alone without ash, still produces a flame in the roll? I have made a roll only of fiber and I get coal

I haven't been able to get ignition without a filler, but I've seen others do it.

I keep thinking about stuff I want to say about it. I remember a Dave Canterbury video that showed how easily debris just shakes right off of wool.... This wool blend blanket shakes off everything just like the good ones Dave was talking about. I love the thing.
