The biggest RipOff in Olympic history happened in 1972 when the American basketball team won the gold medal, but then it had snatched away because the judges kept pushing back the clock enough time for the Soviets to put in the winning basket. We smartly refused the silver medal.
I still think it was Bush League that they refused the silver medal. Human error is part of sports… plus they completely misplayed the last play. No way in hell you should give up a layup on a full court inbounds pass
One of the players on the US team, James Forbes, was a friend of mine. Some years ago, he told me all sorts of things about that episode that never made it into the news media -- things that took place that only the players and coaches knew about. In a nutshell, the US team got hosed, several different ways. Not sour grapes, either. Sheer fact.
Give it up to my fellow Gen-Xers who watched every TV show on this and growing up in the greatest time for entertainment in between going outside for hours and our parents not knowing what we are doing and before going to bed at 8 or for the spoiled ones 10.
Early Gen-X here (born 1965). I remember all of these TV shows and some of the news events too. I remember the horror at the Munich Olympics (just a day before I started 2nd grade) when Jim McKay announced "they're all gone" (and that's also when I learned what "guerrillas" were, because my 7-year old mind thought gorillas were loose in the Olympic village). My bedtime during school nights was always 8:30pm (Sunday night through Thursday), but on Fridays, Saturdays and holidays I could stay up until 10. And I was really spoiled, I had a portable black & white TV in my room! I also remember Elton John's "Honky Cat", "Alone Again Naturally" and "Hold Your Head Up" by Argent being played all over the radio then.
V@@JC-ec7ey Seems to be the definition of Generation X /Baby Boomets has been changed a couple of times. Used to be Boomers were through 65 or 66. Don't let some yahoo online tell you what you ate though 👍👍
@@starmnsixty1209 I'm ok being identified as an either an early Gen X-er or a very late Baby Boomer as both have much in common. Early Gen X and late Boomers share similar tastes in music and had similar experiences in school and growing up. I've seen Gen X defined as 1961-1981 or 1965-1980. Makes no difference to me 😎
Like so many of us, the 72 Olympics is the first one I can remember and it left such a big impression that no other Olympics will ever compare. I was 12 years old in 72 and watched every day that they were on. My 6th grade teacher even brought in a TV during the day so we could see some of the action. Besides the terror event, Mark Spitz was the most memorable athlete of those games for me. Anyone remember Dave Wottle and his golf cap in the 800 meter run? Did you know his bib number for that race was 1033?
Interesting that 50 plus years out and many shows, people and situations ("new" at the time) included here are STILL referenced in some form or another today ! You are on an inspired Roll Fred ! Keep it going !!
A time when America was great and we were respected. Kids could go to school and actually learned, cops kept us safe, freedom was in the air. How I miss that era.
Pebbles Flintstone, as a teenager was originally voiced by Sally Struthers, but had to give up the gig after a year because she got hired for all in the family
Lot of great clips down memory lane ! The Cougar in the mercury car commercials was so iconic ! Elton John , Chicago - awesome! Liked the Batman comic ! Tv adds was great 👍. 1972 awesome Fred ! ⚡️space ace Ron⚡️
That price is right clip really brought me back, I can remember watching it when I was sick home from school. Thank you for the upload Fred, I always look forward to them!
That PSA about seat belts scared the crap out of me back then. From the time I took my road test, I have never turned that key until my seat belt was buckled. When I was a volunteer firefighter, I saw first hand what happens in a crash when you don't have one on. Not pretty. Another masterpiece Fred 👍.
I’m trying to hip my wife to your videos so we can enjoy them together. She has this thing about living in the part she thinks it’s a waste of time. No matter I love reliving those carefree days. She’ll come around before long. Thank you so much for providing this Time Machine for us.
I was in the Army stationed in Germany not to far from Munich in 1972. I had the opportunity to attend the games. What a trip! So much to see and so much going on. Sadly I was there the day the terrorists took over the Olympic Village. The games were suspended and the visitors were instructed to exit the Olympic Park. At first we did'nt know what was happening, then the rumors started and then we found out. How tragic and sad, but a memory none the less. Thanks, Fred. You did it again.😢👍👍
I was a senior in high school and remember it all very well. Thanks, Fred! We used to love it when, at the end of the show, Bert Parks would sing, "Here she is...Miss America..." What great Americana.
Fun Facts: In Taiwan, where I have been living these 16 years, "The Flintstones" are called "The Modern Barbarians" (in Mandarin Chinese language). And Elvis ( my all time FAVORITE) is known as "Mao Wang" which means "Cat King"! 😊 I have 3 cats, so I LOVE that!
You know your a gen Xer when, as a kid, you got into a hot car wearing shorts and you accidently sat on one of those metal seat belt buckle's/the latch, not to mention the vinyl - either way you always got burned. Ahhhh, the good ol' days, wouldn't trade them for anything!!!!
Great video time capsule as usual. I was 8 years old then, but I remember so much from this time. ABC Sports won news Emmys for their coverage of the Munich tragedy. It was the one award that ABC Sports President Roone Arledge was most proud of. Fascinating seeing all the TV classics that began in fall 1972: M*A*S*H, The Bob Newhart Show, Maude, The Streets of San Francisco, Kung Fu, Banacek.
Watching _The Waltons_ was the only thing I had in common with my Mother -in-Law; It reminded me of my childhood because I watched it growing up in the 70's, and she liked it because it reminded her of her childhood in the '30's.
Miss America 1973 is from my hometown, Terri Anne Meeuwsen. I actually grew up with her nephew Ben Meeuwsen all the way through high school. She’s a bit of a local celebrity
Frick man, this one was over the top good! 72 was a year to behold! I was 11 and I loved it! Military brat living with newly divorced parents, but, I still loved it!!
Gilbert O’Sullivan was touted as the next Paul McCartney. I don’t know about that, but he had a number of memorable songs. And thanks for mentioning Frank Zappa on occasion. He’s one of my favourites. Keep on knocking it out of the park xilFderF. You’ve been on a huge roll lately. 🏆
1. 7:36 Thank you for including Dominic Frontiere’s divine theme from “Search.” It never gets old. 2. 8:14 “Alone Again, Naturally” is such a beautifully performed song it’s hard to listen to the depressing lyrics. 3. 11:40 As a kid I used to bust up laughing at the safety belt PSA. Decades later, not funny 😬 4. 12:39 Edd Kalehoff didn’t know it at the time, but starting that day, he was set for life. 🎶🤑💰 5. 14:38 Half a century later, I t’s hard to believe that there used to be commercials for items as inexpensive as ball-point pens.
Great as always seeing LIFE there. The last year of the 1936-'72 weekly. If you do October 1978 and later, you can show the beautiful monthly version covers!
These Videos are like Thanksgiving Dinner, a few days later I watch them again as "Leftovers"...lol This is as close to TIME TRAVEL as you're gonna get....
Wow Fred! This one is jam packed with wonders. That Olympics......nothing more to say. Man, Julie Andrews was so very hot! I loved The Waltons from the very start (the TV movie with Patricia Neal). I still watch the show today. And I never missed an episode of The Rookies. That opening theme is terrific (and I had a slight crush on Kate Jackson). I didn't fall in love with "Alone again, naturally" until the 1990's, when I discovered a Japanese manga called "Maison Ikkoku." I then started watching the anime of the same name. The female lead, Kyoko, would play the song all the time for she was a widow. The show even used it to open one of the episodes, closing with O'Sullivan's song, "Get Down." 14:29 isn't that the "mailman" from Three Days of the Condor? And at 21:19 isn't that Jayne Kennedy? Such a beautiful woman. Phew, you must be exhausted after putting this one together Fred. I know I am after watching it, but it is a fun exhaustion, seeing all this great stuff from the country I miss so much. Thanks Fred.
Never missed an episode of Kung Fu or The Waltons......!!! Great song choices too Fred...although I don't think a bad choice could be made as early 70's music is the greatest...!!!
Bridget loves Bernie was the highest rated show to ever be canceled after one season. I believe it was the number five show in the country, however, so many complaints from Catholics and Jews about the interfaith relationship, made it too much of a hot potato.
Beat me to it. Hard to believe that all of Norman Lear’s shows survived, but CBS couldn’t handle the heat from a sitcom about a Catholic-Jewish marriage. 🤷🏾♂️
CBS tried to hide the rumors by claiming the ratings weren't high enough. I think KHOU in Houston actually pulled the plug to air reruns of "That Girl". (Lived in East Texas at time)
I turned five years old in September 1972 living in NYC. An innocent time it surely was. Oh, and Fred you forgot to put in a sports page clipping of Roberto Clemente getting his 3,000 career and final base hit of his life against the Mets before he died in December of '72. But the video was well done anyways. 👏👍
Absolutely LOVED the show "Bridget Loves Bernie"!! The cast was amazing and the writing was top-notch!! One of the oldies TV stations should do re-runs of it!
I've been meaning to ask you to do more "Day in the Week" chronicling your youth...but your recent videos are more than enough to sate my interest, Fred! You're putting me on to a lot of new tunes..that's a plus as well. Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome, Supamann. Thanks for inquiring about the Day in the Life videos. With those, I feel I've told all I want to share about my youth. And, as you suggest, this series takes us ALL back to those times.
I like the music selection. It's the same stuff you heard on FM "rock" stations back then. If you wanted to hear Zeppelin or the Stones on mainstream FM forget it! College radio was your only outlet.
@17:50 is one from my area; "Belkin Productions/WMMS present David Bowie and The Spiders from Mars." I listened to "The Home of the Buzzard" constantly throughout the 70s...and those ticket prices! You can't even find a parking space for that today.
In either 77 or 78, Mark Spitz launched a swimwear line called “Arena”. He would come to various towns that had sporting good stores in the mall and put on an exhibit. I was chosen as one of his models with one other guy and six girls. Anyway, Mark was a true gentleman to all of us and never creeped on any of the women. I thought he was a class act.
Mitzi also did the voice of one of Pebbles' friends (Penny) on The Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm Show. Not sure if that character was carried over to The Flintstones Comedy Hour depicted here.
6:40 as a kid, I hated The Waltons. So when the theme music came on, it was a race to jump off the couch and get to the tv to change the channel, least the music infect me with some sort of Walton-loving virus. Hearing that music just now triggered that same feeling, over fifty years later! 😂
Mash, more precisely Wayne Rogers, and Kung Fu. Lovely theme music ×2. Honky Cat, Saturday in tha Park, Alone again... yeah, that too. 🎵🎶🎵 A 5'8 girl wouldn't need those at 16:50 but... well, never that high but... 😊 You know, I still like to think Time is my friend. 🎶🎵🎶 Nice, Fred-ssi. 💜🤟
Start of my Freshman Year in high school. 2:45 The Waltons -- They did all right against The Mod Squad. As for Flip Wilson, it didn't seem to matter what dress the Devil wanted Flip to wear. Prime Time Variety Shows Of The 1970s - yeech - helped to kill that particular genre. Too much mindless schlock. Carol Burnett's show managed to stay above the rough waters up to its final 1978 episode.
Certain someone is gonna make the poc wonder what hit her when it comes to the debate..She did a whole 70 seconds yesterday at a press gaggle and said she was thinking of doing a presser before the months out..We are fubar if this woman wins and her vp choice is a piece of work as well..
