This seems to be a more honest, less self-aggrandizing account than some in this vein. This pilot's story criticizes his own shortcomings and those of his forces in a brutally honest manner
A lot of these stories took place in New Guinea in 1942. During that time the Lae-based Zeroes did have a lot of success against the Port Moreseby based Army/Allied P-39s and P-40s, which were outclassed by the Zeroes. Starting in 1943, it quickly moved in the other direction when the Army P-38s and Navy Hellcats/Marine Corsairs started showing up in theater. In the last 2 years of the war, the Zero (and the poorly trained, younger Japanese pilots) were routinely slaughtered.
