So Sad.

Insofar as Kuwahara's claims on gliding competitions, like just about everything else in his book [which, by the way has never been titled as "Memoirs of a WW2 Kamikaze Pilot"] he was possibly a worker involved in production of Navy aircraft. As written elsewhere online, "Add Kuwahara and Allred's book Kamikaze to the category of fiction even though the book has been recognized for almost 50 years as an autobiographical account. In September 2006, Allred wrote that two of Kuwahara's high school acquaintances in Hiro contended in 1998 'that he had never won a national glider championship or been in the Japanese Army Air Force.' They said, "Kuwahara was merely one of many students drafted by their government to support the war effort on that country's military bases.' . . . Kuwahara most likely worked at the Japanese Navy's aircraft production facilities in Hiro and almost certainly never flew an Army plane." The Hiroshima account? Also bogus. Call it "stolen honor", at best.
