The 56th episode in a very long series about the American presidential elections from 1788 to the present. They'll be done by Election Day. In 2008, a lot of exciting candidates enter the race for President, and history is certainly made regardless of who wins. #mrbeat #presidentialelectionsinamericanhistory #elections

The 56th Presidential election in American history took place on November 4, 2008. This was the first election in which I voted in the primaries, and there were a lot of exciting candidates to vote for. But first, let’s see how George W. Bush’s second term went. Well, probably not that well. The Iraq War kept getting worse, and Bush became a scapegoat for the government’s poor response to helping victims affected by Hurricane Katrina. Not only that, but the economic was in shambles after the housing bubble burst in what later became known as The Great Recession.
In 2008, Bush’s approval rating had gotten as low as 25 percent. Therefore, many Republicans began to distance themselves from him. Was Dick Cheney going to run? Haha, that’s a good one, Mr. Beat. This election became the first time since the election of 1952 that a neither the current President or current Vice President ended up a candidate, and first time since the election of 1928 that neither even went for it. Then again, Bush couldn’t even if he wanted to due to the 22nd Amendment, but anyway...the Republican nomination was completely up for grabs.
I will mention a few. First of all, there was this guy…Ron Paul, a Congressman and doctor from Texas, stood out among the nominees because of his non-interventionist foreign policy and overall libertarian views. He had actually ran for President with the Libertarian Party back in 1988 but had lost badly. There was also Fred Thompson, an actor and former U.S. Senator from Tennessee, Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City. He was mayor, in fact, at the time of the 9/11 attacks, and like to bring that up. There was Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and, of course he’s a bass guitar player, too. There was Mitt Romney, the former governor of Utah and the son of George Romney, who was a presidential candidate himself back in 1968. And finally, there was John McCain, who was back for a second-go at it after not getting the nomination back in 2000.
McCain was polling in single digits after he first announced his intention to run, but eventually moved his way up to become the frontrunner. While the early primaries went back and forth, after Super Tuesday there was no stopping McCain. He became the Republican nominee, going with a surprise choice as his running mate. Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska. She was only the second female to be on the ticket for a major political party in American history.
The Democrat Party also had quite a few candidates. First of all, there was this dude….Mike Gravel, a former Senator from Alaska who appeared to not give a crap what people thought about him. There was Bill Richardson, the Governor of New Mexico, who was trying to be the first Hispanic to be President in American history. Then there was Dennis Kucinich, a U.S. Representative from Ohio who was the only running in 2008 who had the distinction of voting against the Iraq War. There was Joe Biden, the Senator from Delaware who also ran way back in 1988. John Edwards, Kerry’s running mate in the 2004 election, Hillary Clinton, the wife of former President Bill Clinton and by this time a Senator from New York. And finally Barack Obama, a Senator from Illinois, who was a relative newcomer but made a strong impression giving a speech during the 2004 Democratic Convention. Wooo, that’s a lot of candidates.
Well, there were really two front runners- Clinton and Obama. The two went back and forth in the primaries, and it got pretty intense. After a 17-month long battle, Obama finally got the superdelegates to his side, and in June Hillary Clinton dropped out of the race. The Democratic Party nominated Obama, who became the first African American to win a major political party’s nomination for President in American history. He chose Joe Biden as his running mate.
Much of the debate between the Republicans and Democrats in the presidential race revolved around the Iraq War and the financial crisis. Because Bush was so unpopular, McCain distanced himself from him, although Bush did endorse him. McCain had some blunders during his campaign, like not remembering how many houses he had, but so did his running mate Sarah Palin.

I was in the 6th grade at the time and distinctly remember this election. I lived in east Texas and remember the hate for Obama was real. Like playing at recess a kid told us how his dad and grandpa said Obama was the anti christ ☠. Then the day after the election happened, the school principal said on the innercom that kids weren't allowed to discuss the results. Later when Obama got inaugurated I remember two things: 1. Lots teachers refused to show it on the tvs in the top corner of our classrooms 2. My math teacher who was an elderly black woman had tears in her eyes watching the tv and said she remembered how bad things used to be when she was in school

The government intervention such as the healthcare and stimulus policies likely increased the length of the recovery. @@brandoncara8204 I recommend a wide variety economists besides just the one prominent black economist who would say otherwise. Show some intellectual honesty here. General consensus is Obama's handling of the economy averted a more significant economic crisis and there is a vested interest amongst capitalists to act like government intervention didn't result in the longest period of economic growth after the New Deal policies of the 40's and overall prevailing belief Reagan's trickle-down economic has damaged the economy. "But SoWeLL says..." If you felt confident in the facts you wouldn't have to specify who the above person should listen to reach the "correct" conclusion. You shouldn't need to mention a specific economist. The overall consensus of nonpartisan reports like the Congressional Budget Office as well as the overwhelming consensus of presidential scholars overwhelmingly support Obama's programs did a world of good particularly in job creation, GDP growth, and deficit reduction. Personally, I think acting like free markets and capitalism are scared cows in a reality where better systems do more good is silly as it implies certain systems regardless of effectiveness or impact are above debate or criticism.

You were so right about how Rudy Giuliani loved to bring up the fact that he was mayor of New York City. I remember when he ran in his election and, literally, everything he said had something to do with 9/11 or War on Terror. I believe that really hurt his chances because the main issues in this election were obviously the collapse of the economy and the UNpopularity of the Iraq War. "War" was the last thing most Americans wanted to hear at this point.

This is in my opinion, the best video Mr. Beat has done, not only from this Presidential election series but the whole channel. It sort of followed Matt that he voted in the primaries for the first time, the disaster's of Bush's second term and the background music, Coldplay's Viva la Vida. It is such a perfect song to capsulate the year 2008 and Obama's campaign and promise for hope and change. Young people from all aroune America hoped and destined for change in the system following Bush's scandalous wars, the collapse of the economy and so on, but Obama couldn't deliver on most promises yet he was, again, like many, "the lesser of two evils". Well done Mr. Beat, the song puts a tear to one's eyes at the state of American politics following Obama's lack of initiative

My friend told me the next day who his parents voted for in the primaries (Obama) and I thought that was a funny name. The election happened when second grade, and my parents told me how historic it is, since we will either have our first black president or first female vice president. I also asked my parents if a woman has been president before, and they told me only the Speaker of the House and Secretary of State, both of which had women in them at that point (I'm not sure if the Secretary of State was Condi or Hillary at that point, but it's true either way).

@DillSulix
@DillSulix 7 лет назад
rockerdax You're the kind of guy who don't understand that when we speak about african descent, we speak about black (or arab) people, not people living there hundreds of thousand years ago. @shirtless6934 6 лет назад
Under laws in effect at the time of Obama's birth, a person with any significant degree of black ancestry was considered to be black. There was no such thing as "half white." If Obama would have been subject to the burden of being black, he should receive credit for being black when he prevailed. See, e.g., Fla. Great to reminisce and refresh this era. The election of Obama in 2008 was the genesis of political thought for me as a zoomer.

ReturnOfTheScrapIron Because the Republican party back then was the left wing party, they remained the left wing party until Woodrow Wilson won and ended up taking the Dems left ward and Harding won taking the Reps to the right.

5th place Huckabee, tv host, sat out 2012, ran again in 2016, got nowhere and dropped out after Iowa primary. 6th place Paul, vindicated hardcore, ran again in 2012, has son in Senate who ran in 16, now most people dislike warmongering. 7th place Giuliani, also vindicated to an extent, not on war but police and Hillary, as a surrogate had a role in defeating his old rival by proxy. 8th place Thompson, dead since 2015. 9th place Edwards, found to have cheated on his dying wife, charged with a cover-up but not indicted. 10th place Biden, Obama's vp
