I think it's pretty unanimous. People expected Black magic. Like true Black magic. Like imagine if the film was about a league of Black witches and wizards, some diving into stuff like voodoo while others fall into more mainstream magic. I'm ticked off that it was all about race, a low key rom com. Just make it a rom com, like it's not uncommon to see two different races fall in love.
True, and the crazy thing is that the male and female are both mixed so it wouldn't be two races, it would be three race because they're both half-white, HAHAHA.
Not gonna lie, the trailer looked funny to me. And maybe they will put in some magical stuff. But I think black hogwarts would be weird and almost like saying, black people don't belong in hogwarts.
for a satire, this movie doesn't look like it has much to say besides making superficial references to bits from popular culture and settling on the old self-belief in love cliché. south park could do a lot better in less than 30 minutes
yeah, except sometimes (only sometimes) snl skits actually hit the mark... this thing looks compromised and cookie cutter. what even is the messaging? the magical negro aspect is just window dressing for the lame love story
I'd watch that, but the nerd in me does want a cameo from a final fantasy fan in a blue robe and a Brown pointy hat because he identifies as a "Black mage" Casting Firaga and Meteor
I still want to watch this movie just so I can say proud and outloud to the ticket master "A ticket for Magical Negroes Please. "With a big bright smile on my face In line making everyone feel awkward
Hitch is not a "magical negro", hes literally the main character! He is a matchmaker who is hired by men to help them with their awkwardness in their pursuit of love. He has his own story and conflicts because hes the main character
This is the corporate sponsored version of the progressive movement - we want to look bold, but we won't actually say anything to offend our shareholders.
The should have gone the full 100 yards. I was up for seeing this flim up until the Romcom part :/. It had the potential to be a mildly offensive but incredibly funny flim.
The irony is that i see a lot of people in those comments saying stuff like "they ripped off key and peele". And I just think to myself, "where the f*ck do you think K&P got the idea from?" People are playing into the trope by not even knowing about the trope.
I don’t think it’s a trope because it’s to based on skin color, I feel people would still not like the trope if roles where reversed, If it was a Magical Caucasian helping Black people, sounds like black peoples need White people in power to succeed, seems unsolvable.
Just based on Martin’s definition, I don’t think Hitch entirely fits that description. Will Smith’s character has his own backstory, his own active love story which becomes the center focus of the film, and he and Kevin James are close friends by the end and present in each other’s life.
It's a completely idiotic comparison, Hitch is the protagonist of the movie and the point about the character is that he's obsessively career-driven despite working as a glorified matchmaker, which is then confronted by the narrative when he gets a love interest, it's supposed to be ironic, Kevin James' character is a comedic sidekick, nothing in that movie is about black people serving whites, Hitch is a professional providing a service and the story is about how he is so confounded by love when love is supposed to be his business, race is irrelevant unless you're actively looking for things to complain.
This movie is a satire, a joke on the old stereotype of people who put POC in the films to be a spiritual guide or magic McGuffin; the idea that the movie is about keeping white people calm in the presence of black people And literally have people under the trailer going: "If the races were reversed people would be made" and getting genuinely heated. I saw people call Disney's Wish, "woke" cause the protagonist is black or the people upset that Miami has a large black/brown population in the new GTA when GTA San Andres also had a black protagonist or the last GTA as well! Its really embarrassing behavior to see a movie poke fun at the hostilities and be met with people displaying the exact same behavior; or even WORSE behavior.
WAT IS IT wid Will Smith n da other leadin Black/Aboriginal actors in Hollywood??? Wen it comes 2 Will Smith his love interest is ALWAYS European or Latino. If he does a "family'" movie THERE'S NO MOTHER 2 B CN??? Same wid Dezel Washington n Samuel L Jackson N Da Rock. Y is da Black/ Aboriginal FAMILY UNIT NOT BN SHOWN IN THEIR. MOVIE'S???
What I dislike isn't the idea that magic black people are out of all things using their magic to help white people feel comfortable and safe. What I dislike is that the MC is only willing to change the order because he fell in love. I would have very much been in the premise if there was a rebel faction within the group, or even the MC starts rebelling, because it's like you're focusing on helping white people, what about helping black people? Where are these guys ensuring that poor black people at least get the bare minimum of a fair shake to get out of poverty? Where are these guys ensuring that when white people with guns try to kidnap a black person to harm or kill, and prevent that from happening? That's where I wanted this movie to go.
the messaging here is that white women are so adorable and magical that men of all ethnic backgrounds will fight against the very laws of man, nature, and magic to be with them - **cough*_target audience_*cough**
I mean, Get Out has social commentary, but its also a horror movie. "Social commentary" is something a movie has, not something a movie IS and nothing else.
That's exactly what I though it was going to be from the tag line I saw. I had planned on seeing it, then I saw the sub plot and nope, not wasting my time. interracial relationship while they still have some issues in our society are not a big deal like they us to be. This should is basically and SNL skit made into a movie, and shouldnt have been.
I want to see more great movies made by a black director with a black cast that doesn't need to be a story about race, usually very one note movies that we have seen a million times by now. I think creed is a good example, pursuit of happyness was good in this regard to my memory. Spiderverse is definitely a hallmark in this. Davine joy randolph in the holdovers is a good example of a character that wasn't defined by her race, but still a standout in the movie.
I think it upsets white people because they know if a script contained the line 'black people are the most dangerous animals in the world', it would never be approved and the writer would likely be canceled in a second. Actually, it is worse, I don't think any writer today would dare to use that line in any work independent of context, not to mention the word 'negro'. The prevailing hypocrisy is hard to swallow sometimes, it is why the thing with those university presidents is getting so much traction. I am curious to watch this though, but I think it will end with something lame, like a white man that is the one really in control of the Society.
Go look at the "death wish" series. The animal accusation need not be verbal. It is inferred in how black people are treated. A recent example that illustrates the point is the Hazelwood highschool fight. The white "aggressor" attacked a black teenager whose self defense made white people so uncomfortable that they upgraded her to an adult for the purpose of being prosecuted. Even when black people defend themselves against violent white people we are suppose to make them comfortable or be labeled as violent miscreants. That's why black people, especially black men who work and live around white people have to "act" meek. Not because we actually are, but because white people are aware of their own ill gotten privilege that has been made possible by exploiting and oppressing black people, and they fear black retribution.
I remember a video a few years ago that pointed out that the magical negro baton was passed to gay people. Like gay people in tv and movies were the wise advisors to the MC. For example, Wallace from Scott Pilgrim vs the World. Even Powder from Powder.
People didn't get it because just like "Black man die first in horror movies" it's a made up trope that happened in like 3-4 movies in movie history. But cool you wanted to spread forced memes.
Ehh people say it happened in 3-4 movies, but Ive watched Horror Reviewers who dedicate themselves to Horror Movies actually make a running gag of how many times it happened, because it was way more than just 3-4@MrConredsX
White audiences & some channels I’ve seen that watched the trailer and left all of those racial remarks didn’t even use a brain cell to see the movie was obviously satire and was based off of a key & peele skit. Also, negroe is absolutely not a slur.. black folks know
Key and Peele did not pioneer making fun of black tokenism in cinema history. The lack of knowledge in these comment sections about black cinema is really ironic as this film points out how undervalued blacks have been and continue to be.
@@zxyatiywariii8 well, you're not a the spokesperson for all asian people, not even for all part-asian people. i don't consider it a slur. i don't even suspect malicious intent. i consider it a sign that this young person is not current, lacks awareness, or comes from a sheltered background - most likely all three
Stephen King is known for his magical negr*e characters: Scatman Crothers, that old lady in “The Stand”, the black kid from “IT”, Michael Clark Duncan from Green Mile, and a few more I can’t think of..
The way I saw this, it's basically just approaching this from the angle of "what if the black friend who is there to enable the white guy to get whatever they want, decided they wanted to be the protagonist of their own story instead?". Which to me is a good premise, but yeah, they could have probably made it a clearer concept so the people who are not familiar with the stereotype (not that they have not seen it before) would get it. The trailer just makes it look like a black version of "The Adjustment Bureau" to me
Isn't Charlotte from The Princess and the Frog the "Magical Blanco", then? That was basically her entire character in the movie, a White friend there to enable the Black girl to get whatever she wants. And yet I think we all know if a Princess and the Frog reboot was made, these same kind of people would call her portrayal "White Privilege" and make her into a twist villain instead.
nah, i'm pretty sure the message in this movie is that cute white women are beyond precious and men of all ethnicities will break old cultural and magical laws to be with them as soon as they show up, regardless of whether they have any real merit to them besides being oh so cute lmao the real magic here is the power of white women, amirite?
@@Dennis-nc3vwThat's not even how the movie went. Tiana didn't "get everything she wanted" off the back of Charlotte, even the fact that they didn't buy the restaurant for her as a gift from the start shows that. Charlotte isn't the main character, nor is she sideswiped in her own story for Tiana to succeed. Her role is actually more adjacent to a white savior or "the good white person" who exists to portray the non-racist white people who were friends with the help.
@@spottedjellyfish5490 I don't know how you could possibly say Charlotte wasn't "sideswiped in her own story for Tiana to succeed." Anyway is free to read the wikipedia summary of the plot and see she blatantly is. Enough with the mental gymnastics. When a White person is cast in the role, it's the "white savior", when a black person is cast in the role, they're "magic negroes." The game is rigged from the start.
The only one who compares is Jim Cornette on his wrestling podcast. Mainly because he goes off on weirder tangents and funny false promises. Like how Nord VPN gives you access to all languages so you can understand Korean Netflix while using it. Or how it will send a exterminator to get all the Comcast workers secretly living in your walls, stealing from your fridge.
The problem isn't calling attention to the "Magical Negro" trope, it's to imply Black people have to constantly walk on eggshells around White people, ("the most dangerous animal in the world"), in order to avoid their wrath. We all know its the exact opposite. First off, look at the minefield of politically correct speech codes, trigger warnings and safe spaces on college campuses. Look at the cities that burned down over George Floyd where has no one has even heard of Thomas Kelly, Joseph Hutcheson, Daniel Shaver, or Tony Timpa.
Some people’s goal is to erase discussions around race altogether. To the point where simply having a racial theme in a film will be considered racist; and therefore should be ignored or condemned.
I thought this was going to be a limited series or something you see on streaming like Umbrella Academy. When I watched the the trailer and saw it was a a romcom, my reaction was: “oh…ok.”
That shit around the 9:00 is what floors me about the current state of things. I'm half black born 1990 to a Olympic track star and amazing black father born 1958 to a Veteran, previously segregated, hardass father, fun grandfather born 1933 to a half black, half whatever indians are in Michigan great grandfather, not so good father or grandfather born 1909. The black history of my family is complete to the last slave Cornewalis Hughes which isn't what a lot of black families can say. My dad taught me that racism is just a club weak people use to beat over your head. He told me it doesn't matter what color you are when you get that power you will absolutely abuse and take advantage of it. Flags don't need to be taken down, statues don't need to be, certain people don't need to watch their words. If you are a government entity and you support tearing down statues and hiding the flags of our past that mark our history you are beyond doomed to repeat it. It's better to leave the scars on the skin so that you know not to open up new ones. However when you hide them, you forget about what caused them in the first place and you make new scars. We used to have this sort of common sense in the black community but that has long since disappeared in the mainstream.
The main character in the movie is bi-racial and the whole plot is that he likes a white girl. How can they be upset? The Magical Negro troupe isn't even properly addressed from the looks of it. I wish this was a movie that made white people uncomfortable like Get Out then it would make sense. The magical negro was like the kid from the new Hunger Games movie. He barely had any lines other than yelling in rage and being extremely strong but he barely served the plot. He didn't save anyone or kill anyone in the games he was just there to show white people that there are "good Black people in the world". IMO
They got an ambiguously “black guy” that’s a member of the alphabet rainbow 🌈 community to play in this farce. And he has a case of Jungle Fever, which is actually closer to Forest Fascination. This movie is going to flop so badly.😅
Jungle fever is a term that's use to regard *white* people lusting over black people. Similar to how asain fever is used towards white people lusting over Asian people. There a whole different term that's used for black men who go after white women. If you're going to use offensive language then at least try to get it right.
This should be a Scary Movie-type parody of that character archetype (Will Smith in Bagger Vance, Morgan Freeman’s entire career, etc), then I’d be curious to watch it.
The thing that is pissing people off is not just this movie it is the constant "the only people you can make fun of is white people" mindset that has been going on the last 10 years. It is just hitting the breaking point.
Today on the topic of "punching up" comedy... The Blackening doesn't punch down on black people when it overexaggerates the personality of its cast, but it does poke fun at them. There's plenty of movies made by black people that crack jokes at the absurdity of our lived experiences, but that is different from when a white filmmaker goes out of their way to adopt those caricatures for their worlds and stories.
This movie looks like a gentle rebuke, when we could have an absolute balls to the wall, satire starring Donald Glover and Lakeith Stanfield. Edit: Kendrick Lamar in a wizard’s hat would be amazing!
Agreed, it might not be as edgy as some of us more militant types may prefer. I thought they would go deeper into the Magical Negro trope. And why does the lead character have to be falling for a white appearing/non-darker complexion woman?
I'm black, but I'm disappointed they're taking such a concept and seem to be turning it into a romcom. Seems like a waste of its potential. Hopefully the trailer didn't' give away its entire plot.
I get the feeling this movie during the early stages of its creation was trying to say something but for some reason got a rom com plot added to it that became the main focus and water down everything else that is probably a bigger point. Probably to get certain people comfortable enough to see it
Well, in the trailer, the main character questions whether he should put his own desires aside just for the sake of making white people happy, and I can see why a romantic subplot would be the first thing one thinks of when addressing this kind of dilemma, so the romantic subplot seems a bit more justified than most. I'm willing to see the movie through in hopes that it's not just another romantic subplot.
This is the most racist movie I've ever seen in my life. Imagine if they made a movie with the opposite view where they call blacksiz pee pole the most Savage animals on the planet. I actually have to speak in code because RU-vid will ban me for 24 hours for hate speech just from posting this comment but they will allow that racist movie trailer to stay up forever
Martin nailed it. A romcom isn't really where the Magical Negro trope is used, so they have missed the point of their own idea. Example: Remember the movie Rudy? It's the Magical Negro janitor that guides him when he's at Notre Dame!
The thing about the movie that a lot of people don't understand for the people who hate this movie. It's about the comprises black people make to get white friends and not be bothered. Straightened hair, change there speech, etc... And doing it through the magical nergo troupe. About black people comprising themselves to magically help white people thriving out a movie.
Fun fact: Justice Smith, the lead character, is biracial (like me). Some of us paler folks are more down for the cause (or maybe a tad bit militant) than people would assume. He seems like an awesome actor. Can’t wait to see this film. Certain people are losing their effing minds about this movie. They need BETTER HELP!!
The criticism of his casting has less to do with however devoted to the cause he is and is more a critique that it seems fairly evident that he's more palatable to a white audience. His appearance would be generally stigmatized as non threatening. And in making a movie where a black person is rejecting a system that serves whiteness because he fell in love with a white woman. It's kinda shooting itself in the foot and contradicting it's own message because he stopped serving whiteness to pursue whiteness. Truly a film that is both too racist and too woke in the name of both safety and appeasement.
Me and my film group were clowning on how they took a pretty funny troupe and just made it a premise for a frigging Rom-Com. What if this magical negro needed to be loved and not help their assigned white boy. I don't see this doing much and not as clever or surprisingly funny like American Fiction is with its premise of an auteur black writer writing the most stereotypical black trauma book and becoming a sensation for catering to the lowest common denominator, while exploring his flaws and shortcomings as a writer in a dysfunctional family.
This movie looks like the biggest waste of potential ever. A cross between Harry Potter and Get Out like Korey said seemed the direction this movie was going in the first half of the trailer. Then it turns into the most boring, cliched and predictable rom com ever.
thanks for the level headed take and making a space for less mad takes. and yeah i agree, this feels a little light as far as what it might be going for seems ok and safe-ish as far as what its going for. wish it was doing more. But it'll probably be...fine. I seem to be getting a lot of recommendations lately from channels that seems to have a thing for super reactionary takes that I just don't want to see. I've been telling RU-vid no for those channels but it seems like it keeps sneaking them in to my recommendations. I hope it proves my assumptions wrong and its good. but i'm just not feeling all that well with some of the output lately and the combo of the overly negative takes i think have been getting me down as i've tried to actively avoid them. ...i don't know here's to hoping for things getting a little bit better in 2024 🍻🥂❤
I hope four weeks in. The algorithm is treating you better. I have to go through something similar. I like nuanced and informed takes and video essays. Not hot takes and rage bait for clicks.
Yeah I thought this was gonna be a Scary Movie-style parody of Harry Potter type movies, then I watched the trailer and it turns out its gonna be a lot worse. On a side note, in fairness to the movie Hitch, Will Smith's character did get a love interest and he ended up with her in the end, so it at least that movie broke with that aspect of the "magical negro" trope.
It actually just looks very nothing, going for a rom com vibe than a whimsical fantasy way. People who get mad about this film are just people who yell “woke!!!” Without even knowing what it means.
people call this racist, but don't call out all the other racist films. What do they call that? Selective outrage? People are such hypocrites, and now it's time for the conservatives to be the snowflakes.
18:00 Just like deferential terms for women that get denigrated for some reason. Dame and lady are words for noble women originally, but dame is almost exclusively seen as negative in the US and lady is starting to be frowned upon.
In Argentina Negro and Negra are very common nicknames. If your parents gave you that nickname you are called that by everybody, and not buy your name, except maybe when you go for a work interview!
When a Black character is self-sacrificing, wise, and useful to a White character, he's a "slave." When a White character is useful, wise, and self-sacrificing towards a Black character he's a White Savior. In the wild world of SJW mental gymnastics, all roads lead to White Privilege. Funny how that works.
The thing that disappoints me about this movie is that these sorcerers would rather use their power to help white people instead of helping Black people!
I swear we be demeaning ourselves with this crap.... we allow it. We need to elevate beyond race and learn to just be great. us fellow blacks don't realize how privileged we really are to be able to even do and say what we want. Imagine if we used that privilege to rise above and be better instead of doing exactly what was done to us
Why did you skip through the beginning of the trailer. Just ignore the literal quote.. "what is the most dangerous animal on the planet, sharks?, Whit people when they feel uncomfortable around black people." LOL now imagine the rolls in reverse
I’m reminded of the joke in episode one of Community, “Sorry, I was raised in the 90s and I was expecting sage advice from an old black person”. But it’s sad that some of the people who’s more offended are the ones that feel guilty about it then the ones that are concerned.
Very similar to The Little Mermaid drama. You shouldnt give a fuck. The movie probably isnt for you. If you want to take it away from the people it is for, go to therapy.
At first when people said that they wanted this to be a "Black Harry Potter," I didn't get it because I thought the phrase "magical negro" in the title didn't sound that inspired. I thought why not give it a cooler fantasy name, but maybe that idea could've worked, like a mix between Men in Black, Get Out, and Harry Potter. A fantasy adventure with larger than life ideas, but with an element of comedy, kind of like Princess Bride.
U DONT WANT da word "BLACK " 2 b involved AT ALL. Black has NO LEGAL STANDIN BY LAW IN AMERICA. Dats Y THEY LABEL US BLACK. Laws get passed 4 da LATINOS N ASIAN'S. They r NOT called "DA YELLOW PEOPLE" r they , U WANT da term ABORIGINAL 2 b R LABEL. Ab is Latin 4 "THE" WE R The ABORIGINAL PEOPLE OF DIS PLANET. NOT BLACK, OR AFRICAN AMERICAN, Or COLOURED or NEGRO. ABORIGINAL PEOPLE.
I was feeling it until they gave it away that its a love story disguised as ambitious comedy. Not to mention they told us the whole movie in the trailer
