As you might of heard, the UAW went down to Chattanooga, Tenn. and took a bullet a few weeks ago when non-unionized workers at the Volkswagen plant told them to pack their carpet bags and head north.
Now the question is: Why would a Southern man trust his future to a German company and not an American union? We deserve an explanation, since we not only bailed out the auto companies but also the pension fund of the UAW.
In this edition of The Americans with Charlie LeDuff, the crew takes us on a journey that starts at the UAW headquarters in Detroit and takes us to plants in Tennessee and Alabama.
LeDuff talks to workers at the Volkswagen plant: Matt Patterson, Executive Director, Center for Worker Freedom, an anti-union organization; workers at a Mercedes plant; a man who is unemployed and eats squirrel; and LeDuff wraps it up with an interesting conversation with Republican Senator Richard Shelby from Alabama.
Play the video in the player to see the full report. Play the bonus Daily Minute to get more from the DC guy with a Manhattan cell phone and some food for thought from a man who feeds his family squirrel.

At 4:38. The level of narcissism, hubris, and down right gross arrogance required to put a painting of yourself in your office (that you do not own) is incomprehensible.

The union in my part of Canada (CAW) did nothing to stop GM slashing jobs.

What is a right-wing agitator? Someone who'd like to see his tax dollars stop going to bail out unions.

The Unions built the middle class . We will miss them when they are gone . The elected officials did say that if a union came then VW would pull out which wasn’t true . Wonder why the south is the a anti union territory , got workers to believe the unions are bad . Alabama is a poverty stricken state and so it will remain. God help us .

The UAW used to be great, now not so much. Men with their greed destroyed it. The unions, hell the state of this country reflects it.

You are fighting culture attempting to unionize the South. How about this - get all the executives before all the workers. And if the execs have the balls to appear ask them, one by one, if they work w/o a contract? Why don’t honest working people deserve that same protection?

People forget, the Corporations have been around a long time and that the wealth that ones that produce a highly usable, desired product that is hard for people to live life without on a daily bases will survive and generate great wealth. The original founder and developers are about long gone on many of these companies, only special priveledged individuals get to become CEO and top executives, they are only the employees to the Stock Owner, whom are the real Boss. Yet, these employees are paid more than the president of the United States, paid so much that they drain all the wealth from the company, leaving little to be distributed amongst the real owners as dividends and the lower level employee who takes his paycheck home to his family and turns around and spends it at local businesses in his community, that robs small business of much revenue to create more small business jobs that also contributes to more taxable income so to fund community projects, services and employees. when these Top officials are from other regions or countries, where does all that money end up going and how much does the dozen Executives release into the community? THIS IS WHY UNIONS ARE IN EXISTANCE, SO WHY DO THE HELP CUT JOBS AND WORK TO INCREASE CORPORATE PROFITS? THEY OWN STOCK IN PENSION FUNDS AND THE TOP UNION OFFICIALS ARE ON THE BOARD AND OWN MANY OF THE SHARES OF STOCK, CONFLICT OF INTEREST AND INSIDE TRADING!!!

The UAW is going to take a bullet here in Michigan, too. We, the membership, aren't going to take it anymore.

I love right to work laws. Don't wanna join the union? Don't have to. I don't see why they are considered to be anti-union legislation. If union membership drops because of it, it is nobody's fault but the union.

They are also called “right to starve”. We have them in AZ. THEY WERE EXPRESSLY DRAFTED BY RICH PRIVILEGED BUSINESSMAN TO MAKE IT MORE DIFFICULT TO FORM A UNION. Right to work has nothing to do with fairness or giving working people a choice. Businessmen fear unions because then workers have rights and a living wage.
@v12tommy
@v12tommy 4 года назад
@@RoadTripzz14 That makes zero sense. I'm sure some union idiot told you that. With right to work laws, you have the option to be in a union. If you like being in a union, nothing changes. But for those people who aren't morons, we are free to work without a union. Doesn't really matter much to me anymore, cause I'm self employed, but back when I worked a job it would have been nice to negotiate my own wages independent of all the union sheep. Now that I own my own business, I'd drive it into the ground before I ever negotiated with a union.

v12tommy Wrong again. No “union idiot” told me that. As I said in my response I live in AZ which has Right To Starve laws so I have first hand experience. Why do you think assholes a/k/a businessmen spent all that time and effort to pass oppressive laws to hurt working people? How ridiculously naive are you to think that a businessman would pass a law to help a working person out of the kindness of their heart? Again business do not want unions b/c then workers have rights and are paid a fair wage. But you give yourself away when you admit the same. That is what makes businessmen assholes. If they were fair and decent it would not be necessary for workers to defend themselves.

Charlie is a prophet, a John the Baptist screaming his head off out in the desert, warning us of what has come, and what is to come! More than that, he's Diogenes, holding up a kerosene lantern, forever looking for an honest man - he may never find one! Diogenes Wept!
