We are back, your favorite first time, rookie farmers (Dana & Lauren) from @freedomfarmsny in New York with another episode of Freedom Farms TV!
Another day of action on the farm, LIVE from Freedom Farms in Greene, NY (upstate NY) and a walk and talk to discuss what we have happening at the farm- there is always something happening on our farm when you have cows, goats, chickens, pigs, and some sheep!
We love introducing those in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida and Northeast PA (AND now- we ship nationwide!) to our farm fresh meats- they taste amazing!
Now, we are even shipping our meats nationwide which we are really excited about.
Upstate New York's Favorite family farm with Upstate New York's best grass-fed beef and pasture raised pork- we do some free-range chickens and fresh thanksgiving turkey's too!

Today we are going to show you the new corral that the AMISH built for us- they are amazing builders and did a great job here. We were having issues getting our animals off our farm for the processor or to even treat them- so we needed to build a corral system that would allow us to do so. This was really helpful to get the cows and the pigs in the best position for treatment or slaughter.

Chute should never be more then 30inch wide or cows will try to turn around in them and gates should always be the corner of a pen, as animals don't like going to through a gate in the middle of a fence section. Fence posts in a corral should never be less then 6inch sq, to be strong enough in a small area. The boards should always be on the inside of the pen for strength when animals any pushing on the fence.

Dana & Lauren, I order 1/8 of a cow last fall with my Nephew Chris. Your meat is great, I'll be ordering again this week. I want to thank you for your hard work and farm fresh meats, your hard work is very much appreciated.

I live in Altmar, NY, and my Amish builder used larch to build me a fence on a property line that will last the longest. It took him a bit of time to get the trees. It was a job well done.

I have used the Amish for almost every capital improvement on my log house: metal roof, siding, etc. They are the best.@@freedomfarmsny

That "small" pen needs some means of further reduction if you plan on working alone and trying to sort out a cow or two from a bunch to load. As another commenter remarked about a tub. You can make a permanent wooden tub in situ.

Keep the loading shut narrow ( so the animal can't turn around ) and they will load much easier going down hill.

Actually we did not know about that- we just did a lot of drawings with a pen and paper- working to create something that gives us a lot of options going from large pen to small pen to shoot.

@@freedomfarmsny If you wll be cementing or paving any animal walking surface, be sure to add grooves for their traction to minimize falls and splits. Diamond shaped grooves seemed best, when we tried different patterns in our poured cement floors in the dairy barn. Hopefully, those pens have easy to close and latch gates to contain the animals in the progressively smaller pen. Dr Temple Grandin has excellent animal handling writings. Her work revolutionized the harvesting sites to minimize animal stress and safety. Shadows and anything-new-to-the-critter are 2 things that cause animals to stop, turn-about, and attempt to escape. Chutes of various widths work better for various species. Watch out when the critters turn 180° and decide to go through you! Sort boards work great for pigs.

The more animals u have the higher the sickness rates go up without vaccnating. Thats why larger farms dairy or beef vaccinate everyone several times per year.
