Discussion on Brutus gold Ide Mar, current market & wine on ancient coins. Our education section is brought to you by Bellingar Estates www.bellingare...
I was glad to see that your presentation of the Eid Mar case wasn't skewed by any "Hey governments, stop trying to take our coins!" types of biases that we collectors all have to some extent. It's good to push back when they attempt to encroach too far, but it's also important that we honestly recognize cases where actual looting and criminal actions deserve to be rectified.
As someone who’s had a lot of dealings with Roma I hope they make it through this and learn their lessons. Just because one or two people at the top have made a stupid decision does not mean everyone in that company have the same mindset. Think we need to remember that.
The most criminal part about that whole story was the local dealer that paid the guy that found the coins $150 for the whole batch. How greedy and exploitative can you be?!
What did we learn from this? Nothing. We all knew that the only smart way to buy anything is to find a seller that is both trustworthy and knowledgeable. That goes for gold coins, uncleaned Constantinian bronzes and, for that matter, a hotdog from a street vendor. Failing to do this properly can lead to food poisoning. Good show. BTW, drinking vinegar (perhaps better if apple cider vinegar with 'mother') is good for you in moderation. Collecting coins??? If we know an honest and knowledgeable source, maybe. If this teaches any number of people not to support crooks and fools, perhaps it will be good for the hobby.
I agree that purchasing from knowledgeable and trustworthy sources is a good idea........ But who could have suspected that ROMA should not have been included in that type of list in this particular case?
I’m still going to purchase with Roma. I don’t see this really affecting any of the coins I buy with them. Almost all don’t have listed provenience. If I’m ever in the market for million dollar coins with pedigree I’ll maybe look elsewhere.
@@HistoriaMoneta I agree. If I was someone in the market for multi-million dollar coins I would definitely stay away from Roma, at least until this all settles a little. But I'm just not that guy! I do have coins that were expensive, to me at least, and some do have provenances, but my entire collection would be worth only a very tiny fraction of a million dollars. If Roma offers something I like, that's in my price range, I would buy it...
