Context: This was the 1992 Bathurst 1000. The race was red flagged after Lap 145 of 161 because of heavy rain. Under regulations, the race was wound back to Lap 144, but because many cars had crashed during that lap, the results from the end of Lap 143 were made the official result. This angered the fans because the team of Mark Skaife and Jim Richards, who had crashed on Lap 144, were declared the winner as they were P1 at the end of Lap 143. The crowd also didn’t like that Skaife and Richards’ car was a Nissan, as the majority of the jeers came from the supporters of Ford and Holden (a now defunct subsidiary of GM based in Australia).
And there was the tragic death of Denny Hulme who suffered a heart attack at the wheel of his Benson and hedges sponsored Sierra while coming down conrod straight just before Caltex chase. Not sure what lap that incident occurred on but I'm certain it was before the pile up just after Forrest elbow that ultimately ended the race and hence created all the controversy surrounding that particular race.
This race should have been called off as soon as it was confirmed that Denny Hulme had passed away. And a pretty stupid category to have turbocharged two door 4WD coupe cars competing with normally aspirated four door RWD sedan cars.
@@letsputunuthasrimponthe rules are that the car that crossed the line of the last lap of the race before it got cancelled wins. That has always been the case and the rule is still used in many disciplines.
@@Jules-oc3pv thats not what happened tho. They called the race, then counted back a few more laps till the right car they wanted was in the lead ie the nissan. And used those results instead of the results where the nissan was sitting on conrod with only 3 wheels in a pile of other scrap cars..... this was a well know case of favourite-ism from the organisers and theres a reason the crowed were booing the results.
got to agree with Richards on this, if the fans wanted to boo anything boo or complan about the rule that created the situation, in other words that when a race is stopped with more than the 75% compleated or for other reasons that the race cannot be contiued the result is taken from the previous lap.
Problem is the wound back 1 lap richards wouldnt have placed and would have been dnf. They wound back further than they should, it was a bad decision by the governing body.
Gentleman Jim was spot on. That must have been so hard given that hostility after such wonderful driving...plus that a fellow Kiwi legend and 1967 F1 Champ Denny Hulme had died while racing. Pretty hypocritical of a cocky Johnson to moan, given he had benefited from a similiar well used rule years earlier.
I love a sporting result that boils this much numbskull piss. Every armchair expert in Australia said that team was only winning because they were able to run four wheel drive turbos, yet they came back the next year with a two wheel drive naturally aspirated car and beat the Fords again.
That was also the day that Jimmy's justified line "You're a pack of arseholes" because his fellow cpuntry man Former F1 Driver and Champion passed away due to a heart attack, i understand him and i dont think he's in the wrong
I was 14 years old when I watched the live broadcast of this. I agreed with Jim, it was really bad form by the crowd. I love ford and holden touring cars too, but this was over the top pettiness and really poor sportsmanship.
Jimmy was more upset that the fans were acting like this especially after one of the drivers (fellow Kiwi and 1967 F1 World Champion Denny Hulme) suffered a fatal heart attack while competing in the race.
