No idea why this video was recommended 🙂. I live in the Netherlands where almost all schools are state schools...and not free after primary school, so totally different. Regarding dentists: we don't have national health insurance like the UK. Health insurance is privatized: you can choose your "health provider". We don't have the problem in the UK that we have to wait weeks for an appointment for a doctor. Dentists? You can choose your own "private" dentist. Prices are somewhat capped. However, just paid EUR 165 for two small fillings so not cheap.

In the UK you still have to pay with NHS dentists many thing they wont do NHS I had a filling this Monday was 140, had a one earlier this year root canal crown was 850 this was private at an NHS demist you often have to go private even if have an NHS dentist. When I lived in south Scotland when unemployed over 20 years ago even with benefits the NHS would not give me a free dentist. There is no entitlement to a dentist in the UK. My MP told me this when I went to complain. There is only entitlement to an entitlement card which you would need to find a demist that would accept that in many areas you will no irrespective of income. There is entitlement to GPs in the UK but not dentists, The NHS have to provide you with a GP even if a millionaire. They dont have to give you a dentists even if on benefit and no work. NHS dentists are often also private they do some NHS work to get a tax payer non funded public sector pension. The UK dentist system is pointless as you get MPS that may get subdivided dental work and when on benefits or a low income may not. Its often poor people that pay the full cost while better of get some tax payer funding. Its because in the poorer areas often no NHS dentists. They would be better using the money spent on NHS dentists to pay for low income people to have a dentists. Even over 20 years since unemployed I think teeth worse for that time with no dentist. There is another problem with the UK dentist system. When unemployed I had a benign tumour in my mouth. I went to my doctor who told me I need a dentist to refer me for a free operation at NHS hospital to have it removed. It is only because I said will complain to my MP that he referred me for the operation. Part of the mouth screening program and referral is done by dentists in Scotland so if unemployed unless can threaten GP with complaint then out Luck as no entitlement to a dentist . I had a friend that new the MP and things., The NHS is not so good for the mouth a tumour does not care if in the mouth or any where else. If in the mouth harder to get it removed unless can afford a dentist or threaten GP with complaint to refer you.

@@edword7195 Sorry to hear about your troubles. In the Netherlands dentist treatment is free for everyone until your 19th.

You have not gone into the rights and wrongs of VAT on private dentistry. Being honest now would you like to tell us how much of your ( very expensive private ) work is cosmetic rather than responding to clinical need ? What's he difference between a fashion model smile and an expensive bottle of perfume from a needs point of view ?. Both are wants rather than needs. And are thus morally qualified to be subject to VAT. If you don't want to pay VAT then get into the basics and lower your fees. Simples.

You lost me when you said VAT was a moral tax.

@@1st-Impressions Maybe that's because I said nothing about VAT being a moral ' tax. Let me explain again slowly. Bread is zero rated for VAT. This is because bread ( and things like meat fish milk sanitary towels etc etc ) is regarded as an essential item. It's a need . Not a want. Essential for the sustenance of life. That being the case most civilised people understand that imposing VAT on goods which are essential to life is immoral. Human beings don't have the choice on whether to eat or not. And women don't have an option whether they will have periods or not. As much as everyone would love to be driving around in a Ferrari nobody needs one And being just that it is not immoral to impose VAT on the purchase of Ferraris. Simple. Ok Now that all that is clear lets move onto dentistry. Nobody needs cosmetic dentistry. They want . Everyone needs pain free teeth ( or dentures ) in working order. Right now back to my question to you. How much of your work is cosmetic and thus non essential work which should be taxed and how much is essential and should thus not be taxed. ?. Easy question. Important question.

@@JohnJones-ct9pr You did say that perfume is morally qualified to be subject to VAT. I'm not going to be drawn into a discussion about what you think is a need/essential and should be VAT-exempt. Is a bra a necessity (taxed), or caviar (exempt)? Toilet paper (taxed), crisps (taxed) or tortilla chips (exempt)? Who is going to decide if a filling is a necessary/need or cosmetic. Perhaps make silver fillings exempt and white fillings taxed? Tax crowns if you're good looking, or get them VAT-free if you're ugly?

@@1st-Impressions You are doing your best to miss the point. So let me simply ask again. As a private dentist what percent of your work is cosmetic and what percent clinical. ( ie medically necessary ) ? Cheers.

@@JohnJones-ct9pr The difference between NHS and private is the time available and the quality of the materials and lab. work. So - no difference you can use to justify taxing one over the other. Private dentistry does not mean cosmetic dentistry.
