Well he is random in the context of the story, you may introduce the most important person in the world if you don't give him context it becomes random.

Yes, pre production was finished before The Silmarillion was released. Also, I have always heard Gandalf in this film as saying: MeHllon, this may have been Bakshi's producers, who decided that it needed more of a kick so that it didn't sound like melon 😳 😬 While Bakshi was absent they also changed Saruman to Aruman, so when he returned to screenings he was furious and didn't have the budget to call the voice actors back to re-loop the scenes with the 'S intact.

He doesn't pronounce it as "meth-lon", he says "meh-llon" which is pretty much correct, rather than "mell-on".

@@loneronin6813 In the books, when Frodo curses Gollum, Sam appears to see them on something like a spiritual level. You can interpret this scene as something similar.

I’m not convinced he’s even read the books because he makes a number of mistakes in these two videos that a person who’d only watched Jackson’s trilogy would make.

Mellon, double l (which you pronounce). Plural mellyn.

The truly weird thing about this is that it almost seems like the voice actor tried pronouncing "mellon" as if it were Welsh, where LL stands for something close to what we hear here (a bit like HL or THL). While this is wrong for "mellon" it is true for other words with the same spelling, like "mallorn". So you could almost think that somebody here was way deep into Elvish phonetics, which I most seriously doubt (and I'm quite sure this aspect of Elvish pronunciation hadn't even been published when the film was made)...

They were building to him becoming a badass in this to be fair, hence he has moments where he almost is later on when Gollum is around, but, yeah, the Rankin Bass Samwise is superior. His fighting against the power of the guardians at the gate is a great movement in that movie.

Well, then I think the movies improved it.

I don't think Tolkien specified the size of the Balrogs other than saying they were "of man-shape maybe, but greater." Also, while they lacked physical wings, they did have "wings" of encompassing shadow. Perhaps in Book of Lost Tales version of the legendarium they were only slightly bigger than an average man, but after Tolkien decided to give them a power buff I don't think he specified exactly how big they were.

Yes. This balrog looked ridiculous, but the Peter Jackson balrog got the Hollywood makeover and also looked ridiculous. It would have been nice to have done it with more taste and subtlety, rather than just looking like a giant cgi monster.

Yes! The scene of Bilbo’s reaction to the ring is not just scary because of his transformation, but it’s also scary because it shows that Frodo can never trust him again, and their lifelong familial relationship is compromised because of the ring.

The only "Classic" is this Animated version, which sticks to Tolkien's written intentions astoundingly better than Jackson's beautiful cinematics...Filled with imposter characters and bogus anti Tolkien plot flips. I'll take a couple of mis pronunciation problems, Any Day, Rather than Arwen being a She Bitch warrior and Faramir DrAGgINg Frodo and Sam to Osgilliath. Yup, Any Day! LOL!

@@kahekilimaui450 The books get high praise and while the it is deserved, I also think the movies improved some stuff. Especially for a casual audience. I appreciate that they didnt adapt the book word for word, but showed us the world instead. What makes sense in a book doesnt always translate to film.

The only way to make this film better is to add some 70s Stoner Rock to the film. Maybe a bit of Blue Oyster Cult or Black Sabbath would go well with this movie

(Sorry in advance for the long reply) I’ve always associated their type of relationship with the one I have with my sister, but honestly I wouldn’t blame anyone for interpreting them as gay, especially in the books. I think it’s just all the kissing and blushing and hand-holding and Sam thinking about how beautiful Frodo is and how much unconditional love he has for him just didn’t really age-not _not well_ but sort of incorrectly ig-bc our world progressed in a way where that’s considered not masculine enough, so people instinctively start to associate it with feminine men. Also, even though I don’t ship them, I hate that they’re based off of a WW1 soldier dynamic. I think it would make more sense to say they’re more reminiscent of children. I assumed that that was what hobbits were supposed to be in the first place, and I think it’s more understandable when two little kids are holding onto each other physically and emotionally in the way that they do, and it would be seen as more innocent than romantic

It's also showing that after 60 years, that's the only effect the ring has on a Hobbit. Its like making a crackhead quit cold turkey. Monster briefly then back to normal. It hasn't corrupted Bilbo because he never actually cared about the ring as more than a trinket.

Yes, whereas This cartoon is Pure Tolkien for Every single scene that made it to the screen. Jackson on the other hand chose to cater to the naive and unwashed as well as his own Ego and basically just defecated on Tolkien's written intentions with Every character and scene. 😉👌

In all of Tolkien's depictions of Gandalf he was always described as a little old man. Aragorn, on the other hand was very tall. 6' 6" at the least.

Yeah I like this video, but the main issue is that the animated movie is treated as a bad sequel to the Peter Jackson trilogy, and not really compared to the book too much. While I obviously think the PJ version is great, the animated movie did get some things closer to the spirit of the movie imo, and more importantly, was made before the definite art style of LOTR was established by PJ movies. In my opinion, and I'm not an expert on the books, but I've recently reread them, the character of Sam is better presented here than in PJ movies. There, Sam becomes something he was never in Tolkien's writing, for better or worse, chiefly because Tolkien's ideas about servants etc. are not really appropriate for today's audience. Sam in PJ was Frodo's friend, in the book, he was first and foremost his servant, and then a friend, at least that's my impression. The way he was talking and his thoughts also made him seem a bit mentally limited, which I think was connected to that point- he was a servant, he was dumb compared to his master. I'm not sure how controversial this statement is, again I'm not that well versed in Tolkien's lore, but after reading the book many many years ago, when I was a child, and then growing up on the movies and other things based on them, I was a bit shocked how many characters were very very different in the book and in PJ movie (chiefly I'd say Sam, Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn of the principal characters, ofc all the others were changed/combined very dramatically due to time pressures etc.)

Couldn't disagree more. Bakshi's elves look like white Americans in 20th century. Legolas is a fool, Elrond is laughable and worst of all is Galadriel, her test scene was garbage in Bakshi's version. No struggle, no light exuding, no "terrible" form. Elves had grace, beauty, long hair and strength. Jackson's elves are much closer to Tolkien's version. Bloom's Legolas had kindness and a genuine friendship with Gimli and Aragorn (Tolkien forgot to write about those, it seems). Galadriel actually struggles with the Ring. She's got power and mystique.

I totally agree with you as far as the outer appearance of elves is concerned and the characters of Elrond or Galadriel in Tolkiens universe. Here Jackson did a damn good job. Unfortunately, it was exactly the scenes that gave Legolas' character at least some depth and kindness Jackson systematically cut out from the cinema version of his films only to leave him as a somewhat flat action hero. Though being a handsome youth at the time of the first Jackson movies and thus fitting an elf outwardly, Blooms actor scills were somewhat wooden and left much to be desired. In the later movies, particularly in the Hobbit trilogy, he had lost the youthful suppleness in his face and his voice, never being very elvish from the start, had turned to a husky grunt more befitting the Terminator than a graceful elf with a destinctly soft, melodious voice.

@@ursuladietze2094 I reread LotR recently, and Legolas is definitely the worst character in books and easily the least developed. Even his friendship with Gimli is dreadful. It's like Tolkien didn't give a shit. So Jackson didn't have much to work with regarding Legolas. And yet Movie-Legolas has something more to him. Hobbit movies are garbage but let's just look at LotR films. Legolas shows some assertiveness and guts by defending Aragorn. Just in a matter of few seconds, we learn something about this newcomer. He's Aragorn's friend and he is supportive and loyal. What does he do in book version of Elrond's Council? Makes a boring fool of himself by acting completely ignorant. But he lacks self-awareness and the narrative is too oblivious and busy with other things to explain Legolas's stupidity. Movie-Legolas has "what about side by side with a friend?" That's the utter beauty of showing how far Legolas has come. Beautiful friendship. What do Gimli and Legolas have in books? Gimli is obsessed with Galadriel like creepy stalker and he and Legolas don't have a single convincing moment of friendship. In fact, Book-Legolas's most significant trait is his devotion to Aragorn. Legolas gives speeches about Aragorn's awesomeness regularly. Seems like Tolkien uses Legolas as a plot device just further emphasise on Aragorn's perfection. In the movies, Legolas and Aragorn have a touching, deep friendship and mutual respect. Legolas is genuinely sad when Aragorn falls off the cliff. He keeps Evenstar for him and greets him warmly when he finally comes to Helm's Deep. When Boromir and Gandalf fell, Legolas showed confusion and grief. Like he doesn't understand deaths of dear mortals. In those scenes alone, he showed more complexity than Book-Legolas did in three books. Legolas is one thing Jackson genuinely improved over the one in the books.

I think he was meaning that it was odd for them to include that scene in such a condensed version, as the point of it is to allude to Arwen - who isn’t in the film. They seemed to have cut out a lot from the books -while remaining mostly true to what they adapted - but for some reason left this scene in, and while it is important to Aragorn’s character it does seem kind of vestigial to the plot shown in the movie as the romance talked about is never shown.
