The Anthropocene: The age of mankind - Docu - 2017

An ocean that contains as much plastic as fish, an atmosphere filled with CO2 choking the whole mankind and mass extinction of animals. The destructive influence of mankind will be at least as disastrous as the asteroid element that wiped the dinosaurs off the planet. Reason for Dutch scientist Paul Crutzen to introduce a new geological period: the Anthropocene, or the age of mankind.
Original title: Tijdperk van de mens
German explorer Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was one of the first to see how everything in an ecosystem is connected. Von Humboldt introduced the idea of the Earth as a living organism in Western thinking, which eventually became the basis for the later environmental movement. Geologists from now see the impact of mankind at an increasing pace: climate warming, plastic soup, nuclear fallout, a disturbed water supply through erosion and tar sands, higher CO2 concentrations and diminishing biodiversity.
During the last century, the influence of mankind on our Earth and atmosphere has become so great that it is judged by some scientists to be irreversible. To name this influence, a group of geologists recently proposed to date the Anthropocene back to 1950, with the exponential growth of the fossil economy. But earlier it was also discussed that the beginning of the industrial revolution was the starting point, or the first forms of agriculture or even the first mining in the Stone Age.
The influence of mankind on the Earth is so great that next generations will be able to see it back in the Earth's layers over hundreds of thousands of years. But if mankind really creates its own geological period, how can we deal with it in an adult way without reliance on a naive belief such as the self-solving ability of God or nature? How can mankind take responsibility and benefit from its influence? We are also finding solutions for climate change and depletion of our mineral resources here on Earth: from the cultivation of cucumbers in the desert, the mining of platinum into the space to the regreening of eroded land. Are these breakthrough just a bandaid on an hemorrhage or can mankind shape the Anthropocene by means of technological intervention so that we meet a viable future?
With: Andrea Wulf (historian and author of 'The Inventor of Nature', a biography of explorer Alexander von Humboldt), Bruno Latour (philosopher associated with Sciences Po in Paris and author of, among others, Facing Gaia. Eight Lectures on the New Climatic Regime ') and Phil Gibbard (British geologist setting up a working group to see if the Anthropocene can be introduced as an official geological term).

Indigenous People everywhere have always known how to love our Mother properly. Where are the Indigenous voices in this docu? Europe and Asia started the world destruction problem with 'industry.' But Native Americans and other Indigenous nations have traditionally practiced the solution to our current problem.

I have been writing on climate change and global warming since 1997 when I attended a course on environment in Karachi conducted by Paul Brown, the then London correspondent of The Guardian newspaper. The course was held under the aegis of Commonwealth Journalists Association led by SM Fazal, editor Daily News, Jang Group's evening newspaper and Hamdan Amjad Ali. Paul Brown is now retired and write books and conduct workshops. He continues to send me his books. He is an authority on climate change and global warming. I have also free lanced for The Guardian newspaper and Down to Earth, India. I am in touch with my friends in London, Moscow, Washington and India and not going anywhere. I love my port city of Karachi, the financial hub of Pakistan. Everybody knows me here. I am now working on three books. My first book, "khuab ley lo khuab " (Take Away my Dreams), based on my memoirs, was received well and is now out of print. After working for over 10 years in The News International, Karachi as Special Correspondent, Special Projects-II I have resigned from The News. I am now Pakistan Correspondent of International News Service, a low-profile financial wire service, based in London.

Greenhouse gases may bring on a next ice age in short term: the geologist should know that there is a model in which Greenland icemelt leads to a critical level of desalination of the Gulf Stream between Greenland and Newfoundland that interrupts the deep ocean cooling circuit. The deep ocean cooling circuit keeps the globe more even in temperature; when it stops, a sudden ice age will occur as cold water is isolated at the poles. This has been proven out in Greenland ice cores - that there have been several sudden onset ice ages that happened in just two lifetimes, and were preceded by high levels of CO2 (in the core air bubbles).

I wish they would have mentioned the fact that 1/3 of produce in the US is thrown out before it even gets to the consumer. The reason? It isn't attractive, and Americans have been conditioned to expect perfect-looking food.

I'm only halfway through watching this, but it occurs to me how cool it would be if someone would create a video compilation of how human activity has modified our planet from early agriculture thru the current mining, deforestation, etc. In discussing climate change, I find many people really don't have any idea how seriously destructive humans are. Of course, the planet will be just fine. We are kind of an acute infection. She could shake us off and move on. I love VPRO videos. I finally found a presentation of information that seems to me to be assembled in the most objective manner possible. With it being very difficult to find current information without attitude and bias, this is truly refreshing. Thank you, VPRO.

Inuit are relatively recent arrivals from Asia. They were not here when my ancestors were, 12,000 years ago. The 4,500 years of Inuit wisdom do not include real climate crisis. This is all within an overall warm period. Overconfidence will see the end of that.

half way in the doc I had to stop bc honestly I got little put off by couple of the 'scientists' appearance, one haven't brushed his hair in long time, the other's eyebrows are way overgrown.... I maybe sensitive but it just got to a point where I didn't want to look at them anymore no matter what they had to say, I mean how much effort does it take to comb one' s hair or trim one's eyebrows to appear in a documentary

Liquid Nitrogen released into the atmosphere might get the wind assistance to mitigate global temperature rise. Mother Nature is running a fever. That we think we can address it is positive. Alot more metro riding instead of cars and it looks like airline service is going to have to significantly decrease, IMO. Would a 32-hour work week lessen or increase green-house gases? If so, then the base monetary 'allowance' might serve as a model to reduce the work-week, thereby production & consumption. Conjecture. And, the capitalist model of more, more, & still more might have to be revisited.

To report on the single most horrific and toxic technology. Ever developed and unleashed across the entire Global Human Population????? This technology used globally is the single largest "Anthropocentric" generating project ever undertaken by Man. This technology is a Global scale "Slow Kill" on Steroids. The balls in your court.
