It's pure Lovecraftian horror at its best. To me, Carpenter is a master of capturing the hopelessness and despair of a universe dominated by an unstoppable malevolent entities as old as time itself.

I remember watching this by myself as a child and the ending scared me so much I was afraid to go upstairs, the movie has this chilling effect. That dream recording scene also frightened me

He truly was, this why i really respect Cushing, Lee, Price AND Pleasance. They all were so very open minded as "Actors"; in that they chose to work with newer and much younger directors, on projects that were quite different to what they had done before. Vincent Price with Tim Burton on Edward Scissor hands. Peter Cushing with George Lucas on Star Wars. Christopher Lee also with Lucas on the prequels and with Peter Jackson on his LOTR Trilogy; and Donald Pleasance with John Carpenter on this film, Escape from New York and of course the original Halloween.

I agree. A career that spanned nearly 40yrs. Little 2 no recognition 4 his work. He would probably still b acting today. He deserves a plaque on the Hollywood walk of fame.👍👍

I think deep down MOST "average human beings" will be able to understand the message but would simply choose to stay ignorant, for them know they know! Once they acknowledge the message of this movie, there's no turning back, cause then they have to also acknowledge the truths of our world and the system. Some of our top leading scientists today are working on big things at CERN, with the Hadron Collider. What makes the film even more plausible, in some aspects, is the fact that in real life, many scientists (both in the past and now) are actually religious (not all, mind you, but at least in America, there are more religious than non-religious scientists). Moreover, there have been attempts beyond this film at combining scientific theories and religious beliefs, such as theistic evolution. Really makes you wonder what stuff like quantum mechanics might one day show us... or maybe what stuff like the nuclear bomb could be like in the eyes of a divine being. In some ways, it inspires awe and wonder; in other ways, it inspires great terror.

@@psionicsknight6651 I never really understood why people would consider science and religion irreconcilable - until I realised that the people arguing had no knowledge of what they were arguing against and often little to no knowledge of what they thought they were arguing for... Early scientists were mostly monks or priests as no-one else had sufficient education and being religious did not stop later scientists from pursuing science in clear conscience. I love the way this film reflects the shifting ground of both science and theurgy over time to create the ambivalent situation that engulfs the protagonists.

I think alot of that is down to the fact most Hollywood Executives and Studio heads don't ever want to allow the "Creative" too much control over a movie or Film, because they know there is the risk (for them) of that Creative creating something profound and mind-opening to the audience. Stanley Kubrick, when he made his adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke's "2001: A Space Odyessy", he tricked the studio executives. Kubrick gave the execs one version of the screenplay, made them believe he was making the Film they wanted, all while he shot scenes and edited that Film in such a specific way that he always intended. Now i don't so much mean the actual "Space Scenes", all that was part of the Aerospace and Aviation Execs, and NASA Exec's plan, to do with their whole "Moon Landings" initiative (which i won't get into here). Kubrick was a pure Master of his Craft as a Filmmaker, Kubrick shot and filmed certain scenes, purposefully leaving in specific Subliminal messages, for the audience. this was why he even changed many aspects of Clarke's original story for 2001. Kubrick also stayed steps ahead of the Hollywood studio, by securing all rights to his work, and destroying all set pieces, extra footage or test shots, things of that matter. Going into the 70s and especially 1980s Hollywood studios learned from Kubrick's methods, following his own tactics, but they would do it in a more sinister way by "Influencing" most Directors and Filmmakers, to make "Movies" not Films, and to make movies specifically the way they wanted. John Carpenter was not treated well by the Hollywood system, and he was a very talented Filmmaker.

So the future told you to kill X (because he is ending the world) and you did, but now Y has taken his place. The future sees no difference; a big bad still comes for them and tries to end the world - BUT what if the future can defeat Y at the last moment when they couldn't defeat X? Everything still looks the same to them, no time-paradox or such, but you know that what they are fighting is now only a fraction as dangerous as what they would have been fighting if they had not sent the message back in time. I saw the end sequence as more of a 'reset' - "You win this round; let's play again..."
