It's actually quite optimistic and hopeful that there are some companies who are trying to push this trend towards sustainability. Hopefully consumers like us continue to support them so that they may improve over time!

When my iPhone dies I’m getting a fairphone, and when my dell laptop dies I’m getting a framework. I love this concept. Additionally, I might not feel quite so compelled to put a fairphone in a massive case and worry about it constantly, since I know if something breaks it’s not a huge deal to fix it.

I love how linus is way more nice and calm about some of the features, unlike how other reviewers can tend to hate on it for not being as good at the absolute top of the line smartphones

I'm so glad that companies like Fairphone, Framework, and Valve are going into repair-ability in devices like this.

this is an amazing idea. when my father's phone breaks, i'll probably get him this! he's really into sustainability and worked in a repair shop so this is just perfect for him :) thanks for bringing light to this, we need more phones like this one.

This makes me a proud dutchman. There is a documentary on fairphone made by dutch television NPO for those who are interested in the origins and struggles the developer went trough.

I'm still using my Fairphone 2. An understated advantage is that the ability to repair something increases effective uptime. When my screen was broken but still usable, I swapped it out in a minute once I had the part - I didn't have to send it in for service or leave it anywhere.

I learned about Fairphone a few years ago while living in Europe. Really glad you featured them; they deserve more attention and more customers. Really wish it was available in the US, or there was another B Corp here doing similar work. Hope to see more B Corps featured on your channel, though I don't know of any other tech B Corps yet.

The fact that you can remove the battery is such an underated feature especially today where privacy is one of the hardest thing to find.

I'm with Fairphone since the FP1 in 2014, I now have a FP3 and I'm super happy with it, I use my phone a lot during the day and I've never had any relevant issue. Absolutely recommended.

Absolutely YES. I pray Fairphone succeeds. This seems like the future. I do not mind the chunkiness, the bezels, poor camera nor water resistance for the simple fact that it literally is a device a person can repair themselves using OEM parts and get 100% original experience. Add the community into the picture and we have a phone that is better than everything else.

If I didn't use the camera on my phone in a semi-"professional" way, I would absolutely switch to Fairphone. I'm definitely going to be suggesting this phone to my friends and family though.

I have gained a lot of respect for Linus lately. I learned a lot in the NCIX and the early LMG days about building and working on my first build, and definitely owe a lot to getting me started over a decade ago. To see him supporting and exposing people to products like Fairphone and Framework I am even more grateful for though. It is what we need, considering how bad it has become. Given how devices have gone from bad to worse for repairability, the consumers, the workers, and the planet, we need products and companies like this.

It must be fate, that exactly two years after this video's upload, I decide to bite the bullet on a fairphone. Not the 4, but the 5. But now that I just placed my order, and waiting patiently, it felt nice to look back. This video made me aware of the company in the first place. And now, I'm getting one. Imagine. I'm so exciting

I'd love to see rugged and water resistant cases. Like, submerge for an hour case. For people who work in wet places, or construction, or just someone careless. I don't mind thick phones, I prefer it because I feel there's a better grip.

Clarification to the "watertightness": It is very water "resistant", but not "waterprof". The "IP 54"-rating means: First digit is rating for dust and objects. It says "5" and that means "Dust protected". Second didget is rating for water intrusion. Is says "4" and means it can handle water splashes from all angles, but you can't dip it in water.

I always wanted a Fairphone 2, but didn’t buy it because “The most sustainable phone is the one you already own”. When my old phone broke, the Fairphone 3 came out, so I bought that. It’s awesome! Later they also released better camera modules which made it possible to upgrade just the camera while keeping the rest of the phone :) Also, I think buying the Fairphone 3 (+) is still a legit option. No 5G, but you will have a headphone jack ;)

I really like this style of video with the casual commentary/dialog and narration. It feels really nice and also very effective at conveying information. With the narration being very clearly done after the recording, it feels a lot more trustworthy, as it's more than just first impressions. Very nice. Also, this phone model seems so cool! I really want one!

Went through a bunch of hoops to get one. Definitely the type of product and company that is worth the extra effort to support in my opinion.

Just USB ports by themselves could have saved me 100's of dollars over the years. Never mind the being able to replace a screen part.

The EU should have a rule that devices must e.g. unlock their bootloaders and provide the blob drivers once they end official support. Android phones are, after all, basically small Linux computers. If the bootloader and drivers are available, it's really not that hard to create 3rd party firmwares, once the manufacturer doesn't support it anymore.

RE 5:37: A meter of water is significantly MORE pressure than a milk jug cap experiences. The pressure is solely based on the height of the liquid. That's why we measure pressure in mmHg, it's milimeters (distance) of mercury. We measure in millimeters, not volume, because only the vertical component matters. Because milk has a similar density to water, you can express the pressure in mmMilk based on how many mm are between the center of the cap and the top of the milk in the jug. 1mmMilk is approximately 1.025 mmH2O due to the density of milk being about 1.03g/cm^3 whereas water is approximately 1 g/cm3. It turns out that a few inches of milk pressure is several times less pressure than 1 meter of water.

I REALLY like this video style between Linus and Anthony - the back and forth is just really fun and it just works with Linus as a generalist and Anthony as a bit more of a specialist here. Just a more fun watch t o me.

I'm daily driving a 7 year old oneplus one and it does everything I want. This fairphone is more than powerful enough for my daily use and the prospect of being able to keep it alive for as long as I want is very appealing to me. Repairability matters and I want to see Fairphone and Framework succeed and more companies follow their steps/innovate in this sector.

This is definitely something to consider when I upgrade phones! I appreciate the values of sustainability and repairability

ive got a fairphone 3 since 2020, ive just recently upgraded the camera module to the 3+ one and gotten a new screen protector. its a little slower than when fresh out of package, but still works wonderfully. great video!

Saw an article in the BBC about this phone and got it the next day! It's chunkier, a bit slower, and battery life is a little bit lower. But......having the piece of mind that I can repair/replace the screen and battery makes me my ore optimistic about using this phone for a long time. Would highly recommend the Fairphone!

Tbh I'm kinda tired of the super streamlined features and "thinner than ever!" stuff in phones. I've rocked big boi galaxies and cheapo walmart smartphones alike and they both work the same in the end. What I really want is a beefed up version of this - a half inch thick, steel cased, completely modular, repairable, upgradeable behemoth that can take a hit and uses it's extra space for pure unadulterated power and tech that can be continuously changed with next gen upgrades or modifications whenever. Effectively a phone like this but built like a PC tower. I'm very excited to see how fairphones advance if they can get the funding up and up as they take off

No headphone jack _"We were THIS CLOSE to greatness"_ Meme aside, it's a great device - hopefully, the Fairphone 5 has a 3.5mm port. Oh, and an OLED screen. *EDIT:* *This is for everyone defending removing the headphone jack.* Many IEMs are capable of having their cables replaced. I own the KZ EDX Pro, ZSN Pro X, and ZEX - *all of which,* can have their cables removed and replaced at any time. Cables can range from long, short, have 2.5mm, 3.5mm, or use a Bluetooth adapter for wireless connectivity. Unless your phone has aptX capabilities built-in or given through Magisk, you will *ALWAYS* be in a *MAJOR DISADVANTAGE* in terms of audio quality. You do not even account for things such as the *degredation* of the unit's battery life _(which makes wired devices with replaceable cables superior in this regard)_ and its striking issues regarding *latency.* I have a KZ Z3 which is KZ's latest TWS unit. It uses Qualcomm's QCC3040 chip and features the latest in Bluetooth with BT5.2 and AptX technology with aptX Adaptive. It has 1 set of balanced armature drivers and 1 set of dynamic drivers. While the spec. sheet may sound impressive, I would say that my wired IEMs sound better, if not - at the very least - comparable. There is better clarity, soundstage, unnoticeable latency, and I do not need to charge or worry about charging at all. As a Legendary-ranked _(since the third season since the game's release)_ Garena solo queue Call of Duty Mobile player _(not bragging, just trying to make a point),_ no matter how much the company advertises it, there will always be a delay when it comes to audio as *there will always be a need for processing.* TWS is just the most noticeable when it comes to latency. *The higher your level of gameplay, the more unfeasible it is to use.* I get about 80-200ms delay on my Z3's using my Snapdragon 845 Google Pixel 2 XL even with high performance mode on and I assure you that as much as I love how my Z3s look, feel, and sound, *using my TWS puts me at a disadvantage when gaming.* There is a reason that you don't see professional gamers or streamers using TWS during their gameplay - and that's because it sucks when it comes to latency. *YOU ARE AT A DISADVANTAGE.* *Removing the headphone jack is anti-consumer, anti-environment, and anti-Right-to-Repair.* Defending such trends that remove _(not even replace)_ useful features is to support Apple and Big Tech pegging its customers from behind. *Blind compliance and brand loyalty lowers overall buying power.* *_Competition breeds innovation, sure, but vote with your wallets all the same, you nerds. Your children will thank you._*

The important thing for me, is being able to get a nice case for it. Something heavy-duty, with a built-in screen protector type deal. Replacing parts is important to me, important enough to buy a $600 phone instead of a refurbished one. But not needing to replace those parts in the first place is important too.

My favorite part of the phone is the sustainability. My least favorite thing is the screen. I watch a lot of RU-vid and if you don't look at the screen completely head on I feel like the colors distort. I don't know if that is because I pay more attention to that thing nowadays or if it actually is worse than say a Samsung phone that I had before the FP

Got the Fairphone 3. It's lasted me 2 years already with almost no drawbacks. Still as fast as day 1. Imo Phones should last for 6 years until you really have to replace them and Fairphone is totally the right step towards it. Thanks for bringing attention to this awesome company.

I feel like mid range phones are underrated. Most people don’t need a high end spec camera or a super high refresh rate or even QHD display. Support and battery life is mainly what matters now.

The battery of my Iphone 5S "died" about 1 1/2 years ago (it was empty 30 min after charging while on standby), so I wanted to get a modular phone where I could replace things, so I got the Fairphone 3 at the time. Had issues which were luckily on warranty but I'm really happy otherwise. This phone was just the perfect choice for me, since I don't play mobile games (since the mobile games market is trash for the greater part at the time) and wanted a long lasting phone for daily drive usage.

I'm so tired of Marketing gimmicks and over hyped minor upgrades that I'm seriously considering to buy this one as my next phone. Sure, it has compromises, but with guaranteed OS updates and Sustainable practices this little company is doing far more than the industry giants. Also, this evokes a child like curiosity inside me, a feeling I had over a decade ago when smartphones were up and coming, which has been thoroughly replaced by boredom, thanks to tasteless designs and upgrades. I think I'm going to love using this. Kudos to the team behind this, I knew of fairphone before but was hesitant to make the jump, but this is a compelling package.

I used my fairphone 2 until recently, for 3 years easy. I bought it some months before the launch of fairphone3, that means the fairphone2 was already "old" in some way. It wasn't perfect, had some software issues and not a lot of updates. I had to replace parts 3 times, and it used to get reaaaally hot with ressource consuming apps. I am hoping these issues got fixed, because Fairness and reparability are worth paying extra.

I'm on my Fairphone 2 since it launched and I never missed anything in terms of performance, and I love the weight it has, I never have the feeling that it will fly out of my hands, and even if it would, who cares, I can swap a screen without touching a screwdriver plus even though I never cared about the screen being damaged I have not one scratch on the screen of my 5-6 year old FP2

I think this would work best in an enterprise setting, coming from an IT background. Imagine an employee phone has a component break and the fix changes from shelling $700 for an S10 or A11 and instead having extra components to fix a broken module. I think if they took this to a tablet then it could further rock the enterprise world. I also want to see JerryRigEverything’s take on this

I love this idea, I would like to see beefier SOC, and would even be willing to pay for that, Even if it's bigger. I love seeing self repair growing the way it is.

This looks awesome. I just wish I could get it here in the USA. I resisted upgrading from an old phone that still had a removable battery for so long, and now I seriously miss being able to open my phone. I'll use my current S7 edge until it just dies of old age, but I'd love to replace it with something more repairable and sustainable when that time comes.

Another thing we should call out manufactures for, is including cheap charging cables. Imagine if phones shipped with a braided cable instead, it would last way longer and save a few cables from ending up in the landfill.

I live in the US so I can't even get one, but the way they do everything makes me hopeful that there is actual people out there to care for the environment and other people 😀😁

I had several batteries for my LG V30 back in the day. Wasn't as waterproof as most phones today but it was super convenient.

“Imagine how many devices you’ve had to replace because a port broke” No fucking joke here, broken ports have been the thing that pushes me to change phone throughout several years. My last phone had microphone issues though but the one before it had port issues and probably the one before that aswell. I've only had 1 phone crack the screen, I've had 1 flip phone (remember those?) break in half, but other than those, it's usually just very minute issues that led me to upgrade. I think even one phone I had to upgrade because Apple stopped supporting it for software updates and the phone literally turned slower than a brick. Edit: I'm 100% buying a Fairphone once I upgrade from my current one. I'm almost tempted to get one right now (I won't since it's a waste when my current phone works fine), but it's been quite some time since I felt that way. The samsung flip screen stuff seemed cool aswell several years ago until lo and behold it broke as expected. Other than that I normally don't feel excited to get a new phone while I'm fine with a current one, feels like a waste of money to be frank.

Honestly spec wise they were lagging behind a lot for a while, the fairphone 4 is really the first phone that I feel like I could justify buying in comparison to their previous products

I own a Fairphone 3 for two years now and I am happy with it. Would love to see fairphone and framework partner on stuff, that would be dope! Just keep in mind that when the fairphone 4 launched, there was still software support and some spare parts available for the fairphone 2, and no that is not a typo, for the fairphone 2. Also, they have earbuds and headphones with the same philosophy: headphones are repairable and have replacable batteries, the earbuds have all the features like anc, touch control and in ear detection and you can buy the left and right bud as well as the charging case seperately. Good stuff if you ask me!

5G support, 5 year warranty, long time Android support and all the replaceable parts have convinced me. The performance is totally fine for me. And gimmicks like wireless charging or 120 Hz don't interest me anyway. Living in germany, luckily ordering a FP 4 was not a problem. As it is going to replace my old Huawei P9 lite (of which i already replaced the battery some time ago), it will also be a perfomance upgrade for me. I am really looking forward getting my fairphone.

The concept is great, I appreciate it so much. The only weak point is water resisatance. Waiting for a rugged one with the same philosophy...

If this were available in the US I'd buy it in a heartbeat, no joke. I repair computers/phones for a living and we NEED this here.

I think this review was the last little thing to push me actually buying this one. I really like their philosophy, and I'm still on a Moto G4 I bought in 2017 for 160 €, so any current mid-range phone will be a big upgrade. And honestly, since I always take about sustainability in my consumption, a phone should be in there, too.

This is really impressive - the missing headphone jack is a bit depressing, but everything else about this is really cool. I've seen some people complaining about the SOC and I get it, but its still pretty respectable, and I think the 6GB RAM will help if you like gaming on it and whatnot. If I didn't just buy a new phone 2 months ago I absolutely would pickup one of these bad boys

This company is definitely on the right path! I really miss removable batteries. I’ll take a little bit smaller battery if I can simply take it out and replace it a charged one. I think if they get their name out there more and then make a high end flagship a lot of people would buy it. I know I would!! They could make different camera modules with different camera combos, different speakers, different displays and so on! I hope they get more recognition and business really takes off for them.

Love this device, and would love to make it my next phone when my iPhone XS finally kicks it for good, but they don't have any plans to expand out of the EU, for now.

Seriously considering this as my next phone. I've always had Galaxy flagships but the last three upgrades have been pretty damp in new features and the last two have broken *very* quickly. My previous Galaxy's speaker broke within 6 months and my most recent one's speaker also broke within 6 months, meaning I get quiet, mono audio with nothing and crackles out of the other speaker. More frustratingly my USB C port is super fragile and is very temperamental in whether it will allow me to charge, even more annoying when I'm driving and it makes my satnav keep cutting out. For the price we pay for those phones the reparability or quick service turnaround is a must. I haven't bothered with servicing my phone because it would mean likely getting a factory reset and being without my phone for several weeks which I can't really do without purchasing a burner.

As the official tech repair person of my family, everyone should have this phone.

I'm 100% getting one when my current phone dies. I 'usually' get something in the 150-200€ range but both the repairabillity and fair-trade are each on their own enough to pay much more. Getting a higher end phone is a nice bonus

just wanted to point out that pressure in a liquid is almost always based on how deep in a liquid something is regardless of volume /container - so one meter of water is certainly more pressure than the few inches of milk (depth wise the lid is only a few inches deep if its on its side)(even with slightly different densities) just a nitpick but awesome video!

I've been using the fairphone 3+ for almost a year now and I'm very happy. It's not the most amazing luxury phone but it's more than enough to do anything I need it to, hoping to use it for another 5 years at least

love the statement of providing products that are "affordable, responsible, and ethical", seems like we need a scoring system applied to all products showing those 3 numbers and combined score. Even a website showing those 3 values for common products would be great.

Love to see Fairphone, Framework, Free / Open Source Software, and all these ethical tech movements getting some limelight! Wish Linus could invest in them all 👍

Watching this on a FairPhone4, just upgraded from iPhone 11, I was hoping to go SIM only but the ear speaker went after two years so I have been that guy talking to everyone on speaker for a few months. iPhone has gone down the pan big time since Steve passed RIP, this phone seems great and I can't wait to root it, degoogle it, and get a terminal running. 😁

Thanks for this great video Linus. I wonder if Fairphone will improve the speed and camera in the next version of this phone or is a software update on the way to improve things? When my iPhone 11 needs replacing years from now, I'll seriously consider this phone (hopefully Fairphone 5 or 6 if they have a great camera for photography and 4K60 FPS by then with night mode).

Rumor has it that taking any camera and pointing it at Anthony makes it instantly twice as good.

Damn! Why do I only learn now about this! This is awesome! Definately my next phone. I hate it to have to swap the entire device, just because it gets old or bent due to battery stress or what ever. I try to change my phone as rarely as possible.
