Gotta sing along with this gem: "You were simpler, you were lighter when we thought like little kids. Like a weightless, hate-less animal, beautifully oblivious before you were hid inside a stranger you grew into, as you learned to disconnect. Now he hangs your mirrors separately, so one can’t show you what the other reflects. When he heard I was on his tail, he emptied your account and hid a part of you that’s so invaluable (the part of you unsellable at any amount). He left the tallest peak of your paradise buried in the bottom of a canyon in hell, but I swear I’ll find your light in the middle, where there’s so little late at night, down in the pit of the well. Then when heaven has a line around the corner, we shouldn’t have to wait around and hope to get in if we can carpenter a home in our heart right now and carve a palace from within. We won’t need to take a ton of pictures, It won’t be easy to believe the day we wake inside a secret place that everyone can see."
“When heaven has a line around the corner, we shouldn’t have to wait around and hope to get in if we can carpenter a home in our heart right now and carve a palace from within.” Damn this song is beautiful.
Saw them 2 days ago and they are still stuck in my head. Best show I've ever seen, so much beauty and fragility and power and love. They are the kings of music.
'Familiars' by The Antlers is one the few albums that I consider to be absolutely flawless. This is a perfect album from front to back. It's one of those albums where there's not a single song I don't enjoy. 10/10
I love The Antlers so much. They have the ability to channel emotions so purely through their music and lyrics. And while Hospice is incredible, I'm happy that they've moved from those bleak images toward exploring more positive emotions (Burst Apart and Familiars are way more optimistic in my ears), although always tinged with a bit of melancholy and sadness. But before I get carried away: I wanted to recommend the artist Seaside to anyone who enjoys this song. They remind me of The Antlers in their lush soundscapes and honesty, and I find them to be way underexposed, so I thought I'd share them :) listen to 'Sweetest Love' or 'Away'. And have a nice day!
I agree with your comment 100 percent. the best moments of Familiars (like the end of this song or Parade) are just so uplifting and life-affirming. also thanks for the tip about Seaside, I've listened to some songs and will be listening to more surely - great find!
This brings tears to my eyes. Lyrics so swollen with emotion and meaning I can't comprehend that is possible to make something this beautiful. The message is almost the epiphanic shove everyone needs a little of.
"Then when heaven has a line around the corner, we shouldn’t have to wait around and hope to get in if we can carpenter a home in our heart right now and carve a palace from within." - Powerful. What a beautiful song and album.
Lyrics from their tumblr antlersmusic.tumblr.com/post/81303509279/palace You were simpler, you were lighter when we thought like little kids. For me, this song is about this amazing, wondrous, beautiful woman with whom I won the greatest lottery of all to have as my Mom; she who was so many things to so many people, the loss of her causing immeasurable grief. And now, we all begin to find she's still here with us somehow, and so we begin a new relationship with her, carving a palace from within. (And if there is a heaven, no way should she have had to wait around and hope to get in.) “When heaven has a line around the corner, you shouldn’t have to wait around and hope to get in if we can carpenter a home in our heart right now and carve a palace from within.”
Swans, Sun Kil Moon, Panda Bear, Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks, St. Vincent, The Unnatural World, Silver Mt. Zion... now The Antlers? Shaping up as a very good year.
It's the kind of song you have to take a break from after listening to just internalise what you've just heard and somehow...rest your mind a bit, because the emotions it evoked are so strongly felt ,it's overwhelming..
A friend told me to listen to The Antlers and WOW, I'm so grateful that he did! Palace is my favourite song by them and Familiars is my favourite album right now from their discography (but I still have to listen to lots of songs!)
Great! I was hoping the download would be available from iTunes but on the preorder for "Familiars" there are no tracks at all. Anyone else had this problem?
Spent a little time with the album on my late night drives to work and I gotta say it is incredibly beautiful guys, your best work. Need to get ahold of a vinyl copy of it
