Lucario always seems to get the wack doubles strats. In Smash4 Lucario players would sometimes just SD at the beginning of a teams match because the aura stock bonus was just that strong.
yeah this was taiheta lucas & some lucario player whose name escapes me i think japanese tournament formats (very often bo1 in pools) means weird strategies/characters are much more common than in europe or the americas
That does sound wack, honestly. Wouldn't they have more of an edge if they fought normally, weakened the opponent, and then reached that point where they're buffed anyway?
@@blackpants7385 The problem was that by being much weaker, Lucario really wasn't a threat to the enemy team, so the opposing duo would basically tunnel-vision the Lucario's partner. It basically forced you to play 1.5 against 2 until Lucario got to high percent or died.
@@joevdb9232 another part of what made taiheta and goma's team so strong was also that they would constantly use psi magnet to heal off lucarios empowered aura projectiles, making lucas an effective stock tank and allowing lucario to stay on low stocks throughout the game. im pretty sure they placed well at a smash con, either first or second iirc
I feel like Brawl's a competitive blind spot for a lot of the community (self included), I'd love to hear more about some of the lesser known stuff from the scene and meta back then.
Hey Junebug, Phil Nye here! Man I remember that match. I think another viable candidate for this strat was Wario. I know there was that one Wario from Texas who was infamous for playing extremely campy. I can't remember his name though.
PHIL!!! Long time no see. How you been? Yeah I remember that. hopefully my Lucario + campy character bit covers me on that lol. It may have been DMG iirc.
@@arJunebugSmash Been doing pretty well. I'm going to see what Data Science has in store for me, I still play Ult and Melee but more casually now. Very true, just about anything campy or super defensive works. I actually liked this one teammate I had who played Diddy Kong. Banana could save me offstage sometimes while also giving me some strong confirms, and Diddy can still play respectably defensive with even a single banana.
I remember when I was a kid, we used to play smash with some family friends all the time. My older brother mained lucario. We would always play free for all and he would win a ton. I still remember feeling my heart drop as he got the smash ball and then proceeded to shoot a giant laser beam down at us that we would always get hit by. Good times.
You should talk about Lucario in PM! They make him feel like a standard fighting game character -- fitting for Smash's first Fighting type -- but it's done so beautifully well and works in Smash just perfectly. His combo routes seem limitless, Aura is changed to be less degenerate and more interactive for both players which I think makes him super fun to play, fight, and watch.
For no reason I fell in love with brawl just recently because I would play it as a little kid. Looking at a fully developed meta from an old game is crazy.
Fantastic video idea. Would love to see more of this! Also, missed the chance to say this on the Ganon video, I think Rivals’ Kragg, Sylvanos, and Etalus are fantastic examples of heavy characters in platform fighters done right. Not really clued into design enough to give a detailed explanation but if I could posit a guess, it’s because Rivals makes sure that every character has a special that sets something “static” on the screen to control a portion of space. For Etalus it’s ice, for Kragg it’s his big ass rock, for Sylvanos it’s grass. All three of these allow a good player to force a disadvantage state that exists regardless of what the heavy is up to. Smash games have dabbled in this idea with stuff like DDD’s gordos, Diddy peel, Snake everything, though I reckon there’s a tonne of room for exploration.
oooo interesting I'll have to look into Rivals more. Something I was thinking about: In traditional fighters, heavy move slow, hit hard, take long to kill. In platform fighters, heavies move slow, hit hard, take LONGER to kill because unless you have a guaranteed confirm on them, if they have a solid recovery, they aren't necessarily dying for a while.
@@arJunebugSmash true! Though the volatility of a system that allows for early gimping also probably doesn’t do platform fighter heavies any favours against characters who can dominate neutral, which is partially why the Rivals heavies having options to at the very least slant a neutral interaction in their favour somewhat helps to reduce the chances of them getting early gimped, even in a game where every character has pretty good recovery options. Also, as you noted, some top tiers in PM outdamage characters like Ganon due to combo strength and the ability to slap a heavy around. Rivals heavies SHIT damage, both in terms of normals, and combo potential, something more akin to traditional fighters. Can’t think of many Smash heavies who have consistent or effective routes to net big damage that don’t also necessitate reading out of your damn mind at least a few times during advantage state, whereas Kragg getting an opening off the right normal might spell death. Curious topic!
JUNEBUG! So exciting to see you make a video about lucario. AND you used my clip (I'm QD). Still playing brawl! I actually think it is the best smash game (unpopular opinion but I don't care) and you and Trela were the players I looked up to the most when I was just starting out. I miss all the brawl tech lucario had. He is such an expressive and fun character!
Hey man! Always nice to see a fellow Brawl player :) haha yeah Brawl is def unpopular now, only the real ones remember the good ol' days. Yeah Brawl Lucario flowed so well, I miss him.
So a stock equation is also in play for sephiroth one winged angel mode. Sounds like a sephiroth+ lucario in ultimate doubles could also work interchangeably. But I'm assuming the effect for stock equation for lucario was nerfed by now.
Do you remember a doubles team called Feel My Bucket? They kept uploading youtube videos of a Pika - GnW combo that was absolutely infuriating to fight once they got setup
I hated brawl in the beginning because I came from Melee and this game was drastically different as a 10 year old I called it "super smash bros baby edition" but a friend of mine who asked me to teach him melee invited me to play with him to have a training partner, since I had almost no experience with brawl besides the subspace, I picked up my favorite character which was lucario and he became my main in brawl, I remember after the game being out for like 3 or 4 months going to tournaments and telling others how lucario does more damage and knockback whenever he had more percentage or less stocks, people would call me crazy and delusional even tho I literally showed them the mechanic they still didn't accept it other than the aura sphere getting bigger, back in those days I was the only lucario player in the city so knowledge of the character was almost non existent, with time as I got better at this game I became one of the best players in the city and I was known for being one of the few players who didn't use meta knight :v (True hell back then) but as much as I hate brawl I can't say that I didn't have loads of fun especially with lucario dealing ganon damage, those were the days and it feels like 2 or 3 years ago.
I’m just hoping pm gains a huge following again, I don’t want to play melee it’s fine but pm is melee 2 pretty much and I can actually play kirby now lol
I remember this strat being talked about for a short amount of time in sm4sh but you cant exactly run away quite as easily as metaknight can in this game so it didnt really pop off
Yo for real I still play brawl to this day, its my favorite game of the smash series (though i would agree its not the best or most-balanced) but Junebug I gotta know-- do you think Brawl would be competitively viable if MK and IC's were banned? And removed re-grab infinites and tripping? I still tduly believe its a beautiful game with so much potential if jank was removed :)
It could be interesting! brawls neutral had a lot of depth. I think the problem was how strong defensive play was, especially with the top tiers. Campy MK and ICs def ruined the meta a lot, but they weren't the only characters that could abuse defensive play. Olimar, Falco, Diddy, etc were all pretty defensive. Although maybe if the meta progressed even more we would see more fast paced, nuanced neutral eg. nairo. I think Brawls meta was pretty interesting towards the end with the players that kept playing, maybe there's still some cool stuff left to be seen :)
YO THAT'S RIGHT MAN THATS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT !!! Hahaha, thank you so much for replying! But I definitely agree, that's what I love most about Brawl is how intricate the neutral game is, and if you become aggressive in a more defensive game, its so swag lol! And i also agree that other high tiers benefited a lot from defense play, they at least they had some weaknesses, like you could edge guard diddy, falco, Olimar, and even Snake, but yeah their neutral game is highly advantageous. Luckily PM came out of Brawl though, PM is such a sick game lol :) I always have said that Brawl doesn't deserve the hate/rep it gets, and while I like to believe all smash games have merit, smash 4, in my opinion, was definitely the weakest entry in the series.
It was (and still sometimes is) a legal stage in brawl singles. It was only banned in smash 4 because the transitions were significantly faster and thus more chaotic than brawl's
