This time, we talk about a slightly more existential horror. Time stops for no one.

A Short Stay in Hell is interesting because the best thing to do is probably reject trying to get out, but rather just make one's own meaning out of the "life" in that specific hell. Ultimately it's meaningless, but to you it'll have meaning and probably make your stay a lot more enjoyable
@applecustard6128
@applecustard6128 5 месяцев назад
Exactly! And all though it would be a terrible experience and would take “forever” it’s not forever. In comparison to eternity it is a small time. And you have a job, which would be much better than having nothing to do in terms of mental implications

What's ironic about your introduction is that Mormons actually do believe that hell is temporary. Pretty much exaclty like we see presented in the book the idea is you go to "hell" (or spirit prison in their words) get a chance to learn the truth, and then are sent to heaven if you accept it. I mean it's a bit more complicated than that but it's kind of hilarious how the author wrote it that way.
@WobblesandBean

Mormons also believe that Jesus lived in Utah and that black people can't get into heaven. I think it's safe to say they're objectively incorrect about everything.

The tangent about hell really resonated It frustrates me how christian-centric concepts of the afterlife are. I'm Jewish and despite the general conception of Judaism as just christianity without jesus, they are actually very different. For example "hell" (which doesn't really exist in Judaism but I'm calling it that for ease of reference) never lasts longer than 12 months, after which the soul will move on to heaven. It was very comforting for me growing up
@Zenaidafromthemoon
@Zenaidafromthemoon 12 дней назад
It’s not even Christian centric, it’s Protestant centric. I’m Syriac orthodox Christian and in my church hell isn’t a place of eternal torture but instead a place of reflection. The purpose of hell is to reflect on what you did wrong in your life, some interpret this as been tormented by your mistakes but that’s not a super common view to take, even then it’s still not God torturing you but the knowledge of your own wrong doing. Heaven and Hell are literally just different experiences of God’s unceasing love. Neither heaven nor hell are created places. In the end, we will all experience the presence of God. Whether or not we enjoy that presence depends on the condition of our hearts. As orthodox Christians we aren’t really supposed to talk about or theorise about hell, a general answer given to you by a priest is “I’m not dead so how would I know”. No orthodox Christian truly knows whether hell is eternal or only for a short period of time, to be completely frank the orthodox concept of hell is so removed to that of westernised Christian culture that’s it’s unrecognisable to someone like yourself only familiar with that brand of Christianity and it’s version of hell. What you are referring to is a deeply Protestant and western interpretation of Christianity where mystery is shed in favour of examining a faith like a science, which is how you end up with things like the rapture and hell as a place of eternal torment. Doesn’t help that a lot of American Christians disregard the writings of saints and other theological traditions within the church.

I get the point Xandern (The Zoroastrian angel) was trying to make about the cruelty of an inescapable hell but I have another question. The way to escape Zoroastrian hell is to find a book that perfectly describes your life. But the books of the library are just a randomized assortment of letters. There's no rhyme or reason to their placement so sorting is impossible. The time people are trapped in hell is potentially infinite, but at least in an inescapable hell, you can eventually find comfort in the finality of your fate. Is a hell that dangles the possibility of escape in front of but that escape is gatekept by an impossible task just as if not crueller than a hell which is eternal ? My mind keeps running to a scenario where a person finds a book that perfectly describes their life apart from a single misplaced letter. Can you imagine what that must feel like ? To be so close to your escape and having to start over again ? The inescapable hell may torture you for all eternity but the Zoroastrian hell does something probably much crueller. It gives you hope.

Somewhere in my head, I'm always hoping to hear someone talk about Arrival - I had no idea it would turn up here lol. After reading and later watching Arrival, I think I've been a little happier living with and accepting time and the way it changes everything, and it makes me very happy to see this read out in your script and connected to so many other ideas. "Time must be experienced, and it must be experienced fully" "Numbers are built for the living, not the dead" "Every point on a timeline IS the point of no return" - these have stuck with me since I watched this video for the first time last night. Just found your channel yesterday and I'm so excited to see what you're all about, I already love your style and scripting, this video was really great!

i adore arrival, it's one of my favourite films, so when i say the story of your life is like 10x better it means a lot. it focuses so much more on louise's experience, to the point that i could actually imagine it somewhat, and really highlights the tragedy of it all. genuinely might be the best story i've ever read.

thanks connor this really soothed my deep-seated fear of mortality real comment: one of my favorite tv show quotes comes from Alice Morgan, one of television's greatest antiheroine/villains, in the first season of Luther: "The universe isn't evil, John, it's just indifferent," and that feels very applicable to this video. it's the indifference of the universe and its mechanics which is so unfathomable to humanity, because, as creatures with a theory of self, we are profoundly self-interested, and we experience time in a very personal way. i think part of what feels so cruel about time is, actually, that it does seem to speed up as one ages, and contrary to what you've said in the video, from my personal experience at the age of 36, you definitely can feel and see aging happening to your body increasingly rapidly. we're all just trapped in our flesh gundams, hurtling toward oblivion. personally, being trapped in the library of Babel for an uncountable amount of time sounds fantastic to me.

I did the the math. because of course I did. If we assume he's falling flat and not diving head first, we can assume a terminal velocity of 120 miles per hour (assuming earth like physics of course). And a human can love roughly 3 days without water give or take. So if we take 120 miles per hour for 72 hours that's 8640 miles. That's the distance between New York City and Sydney Australia. Or the distance between London and Tokyo

Imagine dying and going to hell only to realize you are getting a Combinatorics problem as a punishment 😂 Edit: my issue with Louis’ choice in Arrival is that many people frame it from her perspective. That child had immense pain and the utter terror of dying that young. It could have been prevented by her mother. It is dark. That girl didn’t deserve that

@kevinmccalister4602

True. Problem being is it better to never exist or to exist and suffer unjustly? Could she give her daughter a good enough life and a happy enough life to outweigh the suffering? Tragic part is only the little girl could answer that question. Because every person has a different opinion on what’s too much suffering. Compare the soldier who begs to be killed after having their legs blown off vs the one who grabs the medic and begs for help to survive no matter what. Both valid responses, but both different in opinion.

I might be wrong because I did the math in my head, but falling for 4 hours (14400 seconds) is 160,000 feet, taller than mt everest. a day, 24 hours, would then be 960,000 feet. 9 hours later, at 1320000 feet, you can wave through the window of the international space station.

She willingly seems to fulfil a prophecy that means horrible suffering for her child, that she could have prevented by not having her. Unless this movie entails the philosophy of determinism which would make her incapable of chosing otherwise, she is basically morally detestable in my eyes.
