I read that the belief in being an international peacekeeping force for freedom during the 2000s was built up after the UN deployment to Bosnia and Kosovo. Politicians like Blair and Bush believed that built on this success, they could bring peace and stability to Iraq and Afghanistan. But the Afghani and Iraqi mind works very differently, to that of the Europeans. The fact that the ISAF forces were there to keep peace, didn't translate. To the Afghani, they were just more soldiers invading, and trying to tell the Afghani how to live.
