Playing persona 5 and watching a shit ton of smt playthroughs over the course of 2 years has made a fan of this franchise and I'm grateful for that. It does make me wish that atlus will atleast attempt to advertise the mainline franchise more often in the future like they're doing with the persona 3-5 franchise now.(a persona 1 and 2 remake is just rumour unfortunately...). I just like the fact that combat can be pretty fast. You pick your move for your character or demons, the action plays out while showing the damage you did, and that's it. Plus in later titles, with the amount of customization you can do, you can do some really nutty things with your mc or demons. SMTV one shotting demifiend is one of the more crazier things you can do in smt games, and I like that progression. You start off being this weak fragile thing and then you get to the point where you can casually one shot god

SMT Rules! One part about it that i love is that you get to pick whether or not you want to be law, neutral, or chaos and you get different rewards and endings for all of them. The story can change in a big way by choosing either one which is what makes choosing one side or the other so much fun. My first game in the series is Devil Survivor 2 and my favorite PS2 game for the series is Nocturne. Can't wait for SMT 5! 'fangirl scream' I'm gonna buy both SMT 5 and the Nocturne Remake to support the series making such a big step. I'm Chaos by the way.

Honestly, this was how I used to feel about the series. Though sadly, that feeling has been quite eroded and I have become quite jaded with the series over the years as the series I fell in love with started to become something else and lose it's unique touch. And that's before getting into how Atlus has been treating now while it is stuck in the shadow of Persona.

Man, growing up in the 2000s was different; I can't imagine what it was like in the 90s. Anything remotely foreign (I remember Yu-gi-oh cards specifically) was considered satanic. As a kid, I never understood why, and all the other kids would pressure you to stay away from it or make you feel bad for enjoying it. Now, people don't care anymore, or it is no longer so prominent. I remember getting a whole bag of Dragonball pogs from my aunt when she was cleaning out the house. My parents threw it away. Though I searched them on google, and they were called Tazos and was an official thing from Funimation. You got the in chips bags.

You talking about childhood friends not being able to partake in certain things triggered me a bit lol I grew up in a similar situation and i know it seems small now but it did make me grow up with a sort of hatred for religion primarily modern day Judaeo christian values. That said some of the huge appeals for smt is for sure the demons that i grew up hearing by being raised in said religion .

SMTs game are good but they are not for everyone. Just like jrpgs are good but not everyone like them, SMTs are jrpgs of jrpgs, its too obscure, weird and some are just hard af not many people wanted to try it. Even jrpg players themselves didn't really like it. I have seen the same problems with Dragon Quest series. People who try it love it, People who never played it are often time don't want to try it. SMT need a big change to cater to everyone and that how Persona become what it is.

You definitely get what makes Megaten amazing. Let's be honest mainline is so indepth and amazing its hard to not play this game fir the concepts alone. The original games give such presence and gravitas to its surroundings and the later games giving us press turn and the alignment coop battle system just make a turn-based RPG fan understand what a turn-based game should. As a JRPG fan it is hard to play a regular JRPG once you play a game like this. The Majin tensei games and devil survivor games give you the best conceptual pieces of any kind of tactical rpg. As much as I love tactics ogre and final fantasy tactics its hard to not play Majin Tensei and put its permadeath concepts up to the task.

Honestly, even though Apocalypse gets hate for its story. It was my introduction to the series and just like how you said it, it got me hooked when I played it fully. The side quests, the trial and error, the music, and the environment. Getting into this series got me more open minded to other jrpg games. Shit it got me more open minded towards religion folklore (even more than when I was catholic, I'm atheist but I'm not like most asshole ones). Playing this series was truly an amazing experience.

amazing video, although i disagree with the part "and i cant even blame square for that (downfall of FF)". actually, i can blame square, it began when hironobu sakaguchi left the company and countless talents followed, among the last hajime tabata (who saved the mess ff15 he inherited from tetsuya nomura who wasnt able to finish at after nearly 7 years development). one can say "its not the companys fault" but it is squares fault, there is a reason that they all left and its unforgivable that remaining talents like hiroyuki ito (co-director of FF9 together with sakaguchi) are forced to work on lame low budget mobile games instead of getting directors positions on triple aaa productions...

SMT V was on my radar when it came out but I kind of wrote it off as another jrpg I didn't have time to grind to victory in. After being disappointed by Legends Arceus and seeing people mention SMT as being better I tried it out and wow was I wrong! There is so much great stuff in these series putting it leagues above the rest. Even the very first game on the super famicom blew my mind with how different it was for its time. Glad I discovered this series!

Megaten aesthetic did not appeal to me at all, but I love mythology so I played it anyway, as i play everything grew on me and became my favourite game franchise of all time. I think megaten games is either you love it so much or you just don't care so you don't play it

I've played Strange Journey Redux, and I'm playing Persona 4 Golden and Devil Survivor Overclocked. Awesome games. I can't wait to play the other SMT games on the 3DS and (eventually) other Persona games.

Couldn't agree more! I got into Megaten through P3 a decade ago, then tried mainline SMT and haven't been able to get the same level of fun and interest on other JRPGs ever since (aside from some games like Mother and Dragon Quest). It got me really interested in various aspects of religion from all over the world. I enjoy reading lore discussions and watching videos that document the history of this amazing franchise. Also, as you said, I can buy any game that's Megaten related and without any expectation and still be assured to enjoy it, even those games that are widely criticized like IV Apocalypse or TMS #FE (Keyword: consistency).

The only current gen system I have is a PC (I spent on it more than what an Xbox One X costs anyway), but man I'd buy SMT content if I could. The closest thing was Persona 4 Golden on Steam... Because yeah, like you said, I can just emulate (in fact PCSX2 runs almost flawlessly on my PC), but I want to say Atlus I give a shit about their games by buying them!! Man if for some reason they port SMT V to PC... I'd just preorder it asap. Because sadly I don't really see myself buying a console soon at all.

Haha your video is so entertaining. When I knew about this series I tried SMT I and II on an SNES emulator. I liked the setting and game mechanics a lot so I wanted to get it legally. That's why I got SMT IV for my 3ds and... the more I played it the more I love it. I'm a lot into esoterism, philosophy, religions, and things like those so it fascinated me the accuracy of the games with these ideas. Not only that, the different routes that help you know yourself better, the funny demon conversations, the post-apocalyptic setting, the music! the difficulty. Everything, it made me feel a little vulnerable (because the difficulty) and badass (thanks to the music, and when I could overpass the challenges) at the same time. After the marvelous experience with IV I got IV Apocalypse, Nocturne for PS2, Devil Survivor, Devil Summoner Soul Hackers, Persona 1 & 2 on PSP, Strange Journey... I couldn't stop. To summarize, because as you implied in the video it's a little hard to talk about something you like SO much, SMT turned into one of my favorite series (if not the most) in life. Evidently SMT V is the game I expect the most... and Diablo IV. Anyway, thanks for this video cause this series is so underrated. I subscribe.

Just started SMT Nocturne after finishing P5. And damn, I thought P5 was great but SMT seems to be exactly what I want in JRPGs. Can't wait to dive deeper down the SMT rabbit hole.

God damn you are not wrong about how tedious it was to dig out and set up my ps3, buy every ps2 SMT game and then wait hours for each to download and install. Worth it but goddamn have we been spoiled this generation in terms of wait time for literally everything. So hard to go back, which is the exact opposite of how I feel about trying the older games as someone who started with P5. I keep having to remind myself that Nocturne is a ps2 game because that art style has barely aged and the gameplay only feels slightly archaic despite me only knowing the most modern version of the Persona variant of press turn when I started. Also the load times, that game is snappy. When I push a button I get an immediate result rather than a couple seconds of waiting for menu or map to open. This game does not look or feel anywhere close to its age. Honestly liking Nocturne way more than P3 or 4 which is surprising since I'm definitely more into story focus in JRPGs. Though nothing touches Persona 2 from what little I've played so far. The pre PS1 stuff unfortunately is too archaic for my tastes.

I’m honestly immersed in the series now. I obviously started with persona, but when I played nocturne for the first time, I got why people tell you to go play a ‘real’ smt game. I’ve honestly never enjoyed a game as much as I enjoyed nocturne. I also finished the dds duology a few days ago! I’m so happy I started with persona and ended up with my favourite game series ever!
