An old fool meets a young fool at a crossroads in the 14th century. The old fool stays at the crossroads while the young fool skips blindly down the wrong road. The old fool must teach his young apprentice about the trials and tribulations of taking the wrong road. A quirky tale in imaginative cel animation. Film without words.

That laugh from the sun cracks me up everytime, especially the part where it had gone down and you can just hear the guy crash into that blasted tree again lol, timeless humor

I saw this sometime in the 90's at a theater in Providence, RI (along with other NFB shorts). I laughed at this one so hard that tears streamed down my face. Had it on VHS, but it was destroyed in a flood. So glad to find this here today. :-D

We used to sign out NFB VHS tapes from the library when I was a kid and this particular short was always my favourite. Love that flower struggling to laugh even after being crushed, so epic.

So... I'm 90% sure this scarred me mentally. All I remembered of this was a deep seated fear. And now, rewatching it, my chest feels hollow and I feel like a panic attack is coming on.

Yeup. I don't even know where I was when I first saw this, but I know I was too young, and when he lost his nose and the head screams and the flowers are all messed up, it sparked that same deep-seated fear. My brain flipped a switch like "something's not right. SOMETHING'S NOT RIGHT OH GOD".

I really love this film. Me my brother and sister use to watch this when i was 3 or 4. I barely remember it but everything is so familiar. This is something in my heart from my childhood.

Condie is a genius. The timing, the sound effects, the slapstick, the vocal "talents", everything. An excellent show of how some efforts simply aren't meant to be. :)

I first saw this in the early days of Cartoon Network. There was a late night show dedicated to these shorts called "O Canada." I laughed so hard when I first saw this. I still laugh at at all the random medieval stuff going on in the background that seems to have no effect on these two.

It's actually quite intricate ... here's my understanding: The old guy and his apprentice are on their way to the castle. The apprentice sees the sign, and points out that the old guy is going the wrong way. The old guy says "no, the castle is this way..." The apprentice doesn't listen, assumes he knows better, and heads the way he thinks is right. On the way, he runs into a tree. Then he runs into a tree again. Then he runs into the same tree ... again. He continues running into the tree until he falls on his nose and crushes the flowers. He gets up, but pulls his nose off in the process. Defeated, he heads back the way he came, with no nose. The camera pulls back, showing that if he had gotten around the tree, he would have fallen to his death. The old guy is waiting for him. He prepares a new nose, just as the apprentice comes round the bend. Then they proceed to the castle together, on the right path, which the old guy knew all along. At the end, the apprentice expresses his appreciation for the old guy and hugs him. We see the tree hanging around the old guy's neck, indicating that he may have magically placed the tree there in order to prevent the apprentice from falling to his death.

Somehow a long time ago I came across these NFB shorts and I watched a bunch of them (This one, The Cat Came Back, Get A Job, The Big Snit, and some weird one with a baby who was really an alien). I have no idea where I saw these but it must have been 20+ years ago when I was young and I never forgot these absolutely freakish things, thought I dreamed them for sure

If that apprentice jester hadn't kept banging into the tree,he would have fallen over the cliff, like so many people, in his attempts to reach the castle 🏰. He gave up and rejoined the master jester, who obviously knew the better way to go there.🌈🦄⭐👑🦊🏰

That might be Pigbird. It's by the same warped/hilarious animator that did this cartoon and The Big Snit. The NFB doesn't have it on their channel yet for some reason but there are a couple of other versions of it on RU-vid.

😂 I love how nearly every last human in this cartoon is dead or dying and the only form of language the fools utter is mainly the sound of them drunkly gargling port wine while spitting out floating abstract shapes. The only thing I remembered from this short when I first saw it was the fact that all of the speech was just gargling. I thought it was hilarious as a kid, but now I find it kind of gross.
