The Aqara Presence Sensor FP2 - a Total GAME CHANGER!

The Aqara FP2 is the successor to Aqara’s first attempt at a super accurate presence sensor, namely the FP1. Unfortunately, at least from my perspective, this didn’t hit the mark. However, when it comes to the FP2, this deserves the accolade of ‘GAME CHANGER'. This is due to a few significant improvements - multiple zones, faster response times, and far more accuracy, not to mention a light sensor also exposed to HomeKit.
The multiple zones are possibly the most important one, as you can split up the FP2's coverage area into separate zones, each of which is exposed to HomeKit as individual sensors. Watch the video to see me put it through its paces.

Great review as usual!!! Can't wait for my FP2 to arrive so I can test it, looks much better than the FP1. I also liked that the cable is removable, this way I can replace for a shorter one whenever is needed.

The hardest part is creating your layout and placing things like furniture inside the layout. Getting the boundaries or walls of the room in question are important too, but once it’s all done, you shouldn’t need to touch it again, unless you either move the sensor, or a piece of furniture.

Hi! Great video as usual. Can you only create zones using the Aqara app and not the Home app? And if that’s so, does that mean you can only make zones while signed in to an account? Can you make zones using the “Homekit Mode” of the Aqara app? Thanks!
@homekitnews
@homekitnews Год назад
Hi, zones can only be created in the Aqara app, as the Home app has no framework to be able to create zones. If you sign out there’s no option to create zones either. You only see the zone names along with the ability to edit the names, nothing more.

As always great review! Can you please explain the disadvantages of the Chinese version for HomeKit users. If I don't intend to use Google or Alexa integration, what do I lose by getting the Chinese version? Can we add it to the Aqara international server in the app? If not, do we lose any benefits? Thanks!
@homekitnews

If you only plan to use HomeKit and the Aqara app, then the Chinese version will be much the same, although it’s not likely you’ll be able to connect it to international servers, which is the case with their other China based devices, like hubs and cameras.

@homekitnews
@homekitnews Год назад
If you had different FP2s on different floors I don’t think you’d suffer any interference (unless your floors were made of glass…), but you would have to ensure multiple devices on one floor are far enough apart and overlap as little as possible.

Nice review thank you ! I have a question regarding small rooms. Is it possible for the sensor to detect someone behind a wall ? And if not, how does it manage multiple fp2s for a full house detection setup ?
@homekitnews
@homekitnews Год назад
Hi, it depends on the wall material and thickness mostly as to whether these types of sensors can detect people through walls, but the FP2 allows you to set edges for the room so that it can disregard detection beyond its designated area. I’ve got two, but so far I’m only using one of them, but like the FP1, you have to ensure these sensors don’t have any large overlap, or they could result in detection anomalies. I think for smaller rooms these are overkill, so the FP1 is probably better for places like bathrooms etc.

Nice intro and video! I got a few questions: Would an AC trigger the sensor or somehow impact its detection capability (as they blow cold air around the room)? Separately, can it differentiate humans from small pets like cats or dogs?
@homekitnews
@homekitnews Год назад
Hi, for the AC I guess it’s possible that it could trigger the sensor by proxy - meaning if the fan speed was high enough it could move other things in the room, like the leaves of a plant or a hanging towel, perhaps. It’s getting hot where we live but I’ve yet to activate the AC in that room, so I may test it later today, and get back to you. As for pets, no it can’t tell the difference, although depending on the height you set the sensor to, it may not pick up smaller pets who are outside of its detection range, which I’ve found to be the case with our dog until he hops onto the sofa.

Yes, this also works with Alexa. It uses WiFi so you don’t need either an Aqara hub or any HomeKit Home Hubs. I’m not sure if you get the same level of functionality as you do in HomeKit, but you’ll need to set up the FP2 in the Aqara app initially to get the full functionality out of it.

@homekitnews

@homekitnews
@homekitnews Год назад
You would have to ensure that every room was covered in a situation like this, but to be honest you should be able to do this in HomeKit without needing a sensor, as HomeKit can create this kind of automation based on your geolocation. This would require both yours and your gf’s phones to be connected to your HomeKit setup, and allow HomeKit access to your location.

@homekitnews
@homekitnews Год назад
It’s hard to know what could be the source of the ghost detections, but some things can create false triggers, like fans, plants moving due to wind, or sometimes reflective surfaces. If you can work out the source, then you might be able to create a separated zone that can be labelled as an ‘interference zone. It’s also important to make sure you’ve set your edges correctly, and also use the ‘reset absence state’ when it’s detecting presence when there is none, so that the algorithm can learn from the errors.

Question. If a house I intend to use this presence sensor has 3 floors: basement, main and upper, and I want to zone the stairwells (basement and upper). How does it zone three dimensions? (Diagonal orientation of the stairwell) Does it? Can it? Where would I put the sensor? Main floor?
@homekitnews
@homekitnews 8 месяцев назад
It really depends on how many steps each stairwell has I guess, as there’s a limit to the vertical range of detection. If you want it to detect presence coming from both above and below, it should work to an extent, if you placed it between two floors, but it’s hard to know for sure without seeing your stairs. Having two would bring potential interference issues between the two sensors as well.

@@Dpixtion I understand. So I would suggest the basics, besides your iPhone and WiFi router are the following; a HomePod Mini, HomePod or Apple TV (cheapest option is HomePod Mini) - you need one of these in order to be able to create and run automations in Apple HomeKit, as well as give you access to any devices you want to control when you’re not at home. In addition, I suggest you buy the Nanoleaf A19 smart bulbs. They’re cheap enough for brightness and full colour bulbs, and they’ll work well with the Aqara FP2. If you go with the Nanoleaf bulbs, make sure to buy the HomePod Mini or the Apple TV with 128gb memory. After you have the mini and some bulbs you can start automating your lights like I do in the video.
