The Archetypes of Fighting

Why is it that certain fighters gravitate toward specific fighting styles? How should YOU chose your fighting style? The answers may lie within the psychological phenomenon of Archetypes.

What is an Archetype?
The archetypes in this video are based on those presented by Carl Jung in his work: "The Archetypes of the Collective Unconscious." Jung described archetypes as images or themes (symbols) that derive from the collective unconscious and have universal meanings across cultures.
He likened archetypes to: instinctual patterns of behavior. Plato also described this phenomenon with his concept of the Idea: which was summarized in the Abstracts of the Collected Works of C.G. Jung as a "Primordial disposition that preforms and influences thoughts."
So in the context of fighting, an archetype is the manifestation of the all conscious and unconscious forces that guide a fighter, in and out of the ring. These forces include:
Their martial arts background and training styles.
Their personality and temperament.
Their purpose and values.
And literally any other subconscious motivation you can think of.
This video also introduces the eight different fighter archetypes from a philosophical perspective. Fighters in this video represent Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Karate, Taekwondo, Judo, Sambo, and Boxing.
The Trickster - Saenchai, Lerdsila, Sean O'Malley, Michael Venom Page, Prince Naseem Hamed, Tyson Fury, etc.
The Brawler - Rodtang, Justin Gaethje, John Lineker, Michael Chandler, Roberto Duran, Joe Frazier, etc.
The Technician - Israel Adesanya, Giorgio Petrosyan, Alexander Volkanovski, Kamaru Usman, Islam Makhachev, Floyd Mayweather, etc.
The Artist - Yair Rodriguez, Lyoto Machida, Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson, Dany Bill, Vasily Lomachenko, etc.
The Bully - Jon Jones, Colby Covington, Petr Yan, Conor McGregor, Mike Tyson, etc.
The Warrior - Forrest Griffin, Dustin Poirier, Daniel Cormier, Julio Cesar Chavez, Rocky Marciano, John Wayne Parr, etc.
The Crusader - Khabib Nurmagomedov, Muhammad Ali, Beneil Dariush, Yoel "The Soldier of God" Romero, etc.
The Monk - Jiri Prochazka, Zabit Magomedsharipov, Bruce Lee, Alex Caceres aka Bruce Leeroy, etc.
Which archetypes do you most closely relate with? What other fighters should I have included on these lists? Are there any other mma highlights, muay thai highlights, or boxing highlights that would have been a good fit? Is this video good training motivation? Let me know in the comments.

These 8 types could be seperated into 4 duals, opposite yet remain in the same area: Trickster vs brawler: the fight is inside the ring. Technichian vs artist: the fight is in the head. Bully vs warrior: the fight is in the heart. Crusader vs monk: the fight is in the soul.

Obviously theres exceptions but even with the exceptions but most of the time the tall skinny guy is good at both not JUST wrestling. And the stocky guy will be well rounded as well.

The trickster: What they lack in physical strength, they make up for in presentation. The brawler: The tank, what they lack in speed, they make up for with physical strength. The tactician: What they lack in presentation, they make up for in intellect. The artist: They specializes in using tactics most consider ineffective for surprising the enemy. The bully: The villain, getting in people's heads psychologically and striking their enemies physically. The warrior: Pure hearted to a fault. They are willing to work hard to make better lives for themselves. The Crusader: They did not simply enter the ring, they were called to it by a higher power. The monk: For them, fighting means personal growth. They don't care about money or spectacle, but instead an introspective sense of self.

This channel has completely captivated me. Martial arts is the only sport with which I truly connect, and it is the best place to physically explore philosophy because it is both fundamental to being human and incredibly personal to an individual. Before language, we could only express ourselves through gestures and movement, and fighting is one of the oldest forms of expression. You are caught between life and death while doing so. To fight is to be human; to fight is to be alive. No other sport can embody the human spirit or match the depths to which combat can transport you.

Such an interesting video! I was always the scrawny kid who thought fighting was silly and for meatheads who couldn't control their emotions, and instead focused on my intelligence and growing it. Now I'm 22 and in the past year have really started hitting the gym and focused on seeing what I am capable of. Our bodies are immediate reflections of who we think we are, in how we treat ourselves. They are usually the first contact others have of who we are as well. Being able to learn how to fight and how to defend yourself isn't about recklessly letting off steam, it's about helping yourself fight for the things you feel are important in your life. The reasons why you continue to do what you do. To face down fear and move forward is what makes us alive! Thank you for the video, I hadn't considered the different archetypes before, and it makes me want to start sparring, and learning more about the archetypes! :)

I have not been able to find a vidoe on archetypes that is what I’m actually looking for being attached to some sort of philosophy and having this level of quality and attention put into the video. Great job 👍 👏

Pretty interesting analysis, mate. I would add that imo there are very few fighters that represent a clear type archetype. As with the character of a person that constantly modifies itself based on various experiences, fighters may fall to a dominant type of archetype category but include the aspects of others in their style as well.

What should my fighting style be? I took up wrestling as kid due to my stocky build and massive calves. I also played soccer for almost a decade so my stamina is amazing. Now I’m older and I have slimmed down but still have my stocky build at 6’0. My fingers almost touch my kneecaps, so I may have a 70+ inch reach. I practiced boxing for a bit but my coaches always wanted me to get close so it never suited my body type.

Of course nobody is fully only one archetype, i would say some have almost all of them. Like a Jon jones who is a bully. He also is an artist especially early in his career, where he pulled out the most unorthodox moves and popularized the Oblique kick etc. He also is a tactician as he studies his opponents and himself, sometimes he figures out the puzzle mid fight. Etc. Of course some of these archetype say a lot about their style and others focus more of that purpose and mindset behind it.

I actually found it really cool how much these archetypes hit the nail on the head. Was curious what would fit me but as soon as you said brawler I knew. I'm a dude that prides myself on durability, I really don't mind trading hits. Legit the people I look up to most are people tony Ferguson that just never quit, and lethwei fighters. Funny thing is I've always tended to gravitate to grappling sports. Like I love shadowboxing, working the heavybag bare knuckle, and hardening my knuckles, but my whole life I just end up grappling. Wrestled most of my childhood and have gotten into amateur sumo in the past couple years. Grappling just comes naturally to me for some reason. Like my striking game is good, my sparring partners always tell me to try and strike more because of how much force there is to my hits, I just end up defaulting to picking people up.

The martial art you're trained in really does affect your archetype. I've always thought of myself as an artists getting into martial arts looking up unique techniques and previous disciplines I know. However learning Judo as my first martial art, a very strict and methodical sport grounded me to lean into becoming more of a technician. I really wish to train with martial arts. It's such a different experience and unique way of self improvement in many ways. It's also such a unique type of communication between fighters. Cheers everyone

I think the last 4 archetype are more of a personality while the rest are fighting style. Because if we look at Ali his fighting style is a tactician but his personality is a crusader, Tyson is a bully-brawler, Hamed is a crusader-trickster, etc.

Back when I was competing in BJJ, I was absolutely the technician. I would work with my eyes closed because I learned how to feel where my opponent’s body weight was going. I’d be in guard for minutes until I felt a slip up on there end and capitalize. My old coach and my dad would probably disagree and say I was closer to the artist, I had some flashy moves (nailed a flying triangle in a tournament and ended up rolling through to a mount triangle) but I rarely used them, I preferred to pull guard and use my signature triangle choke.

I’m definitely more of a technician. But lately with my interests in pursuing inner goals, I’m becoming more of a monk. I’m constantly studying my videos of boxing sparring to improve myself since I’m mostly self taught, but then there’s my kenjutsu that I’m also trying to perfect. There’s many styles to fighting but finding your own personal style is the most meaningful.

100% feel the same way. Learning martial arts really is a spiritual journey inward. After i stopped training, it still affects my whole life and my attitude on things. It never truly leaves you. Tournaments are cool, I’ve done a few, but i mostly go to support my friends and build new relationships. Its just a fun environment to be in, but I don’t take the winning & losing too seriously (but thats just me)

I would also add that archetypes can be divided in different ways. As for the warrior it fits the in my opinion bigger archetype which is archetype of the hero, that would be a well rounded well ballanced fighter and that ballance is a type of a person who is more like a perfect human (he doesn't have any big flaws), in terms of body type and skills and also mentality. In popculter there is all sorts of hero archetypes, those persons are for example fit and smart (it's well roundedness) also in games, books, in Zelda the Triforce indicates that there is a ballance to a hero. Sorry for the bad english

I think there should be another Archetype called "The Beast" with examples being Tony Fergusson, Khamzat Chimaev, Mike Tyson etc. The Beast Archetype is usually born into a very harsh world and he/she reflects that upbringing in the cage with a vicious and animal-like bloodthirst in their behaviour like when Khamzat Chimaev screamed "Kill everyone!" and then proceeded to roar.
