glad to hear you have 2 left. They're very tough. I finished them last March...but i'm in California, so I have that pesky additional one left..... Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the video. I've been trying to get an explanation on why the exam was so difficult.. Every time I'd ask a professor they'd give a similar explanation but not as detailed..I have a much better understanding now.

Drew Paul, we missed your videos. Where are you ? Can you explain what does it mean that job outlook growth for architects will be 4% (slower than average) ? Does that mean salary of architects will go down or does it mean it will be hard to find job ? Can you clarify www.bls.gov/ooh/architecture-and-engineering/architects.htm#tab-6

Hey man! I am still around. I am focusing on the ARE's right now and some other big projects (in life AND at work), so I have to be a little more under-the-radar than I would like to be for the moment. But I'm not going anywhere :) Once I get my license, I will have a better understanding about architecture and I will be able to make better videos for you. So it is all for the greater good... That page says that there will be growth in the architecture sector, just less growth than other occupations. Less growth is still growth though. With a high number of architecture students getting degrees, graduates will likely have more competition for jobs. I don't really know what that means for architects' income. The industry depends so much on the building industry and there's a lot of factors at play. Also, I don't think anyone can really predict the downturns. So, I would take that with a grain of salt.... I can say that right now, we are super busy here in Atlanta. And not just architects. Surveyors, contractors, subs, building departments, etc. So for the moment, things are going really well.

Drew Paul Bell Thanks, I appreciate your reply. I wish you good luck in your ARE exam. Could you please make a video on how foreign architects get licensed as well in US from outside and inside with foreign architectural degree. It would be interesting point because I see NCARB made a section for foreign architects.

Can you discuss the difference between an architecture bachelors degree and architectural engineering bachelors degree. How the jobs may vary and is the AE degree worth it resulting the job opportunities and requirements.

If your parents cannot fund your undergraduate education, you can take out government loans, or apply for scholarships. I got financial aid in undergrad and took out student loans for grad school.

Consider how much more difficult that process would have been if you weren't unencumbered. Imagine if you had kids / family to take care of as the primary caretaker and breadwinner while also working and taking exams. It's more complicated than just 3 months of having a boring social life.

please brother told me which book i can study ARE please i am study from ncarb handbook only but i feel that is not enough
@DrewPaulBell
@DrewPaulBell 4 года назад
You’re right, the NCARB handbook is not enough. I recommend the ARE5.0 manual from Ballast / PPI along with another that you choose. You need to study from more than one source in my opinion.

This fall I was planning on majoring in architectural studies, but also take my prerequisites to get into medical. I love architecture and want to major in something I'm interested in. Do you believe this is possible ?

So looking back on your studying... which books/material should one read/study to prepare for the exams?
@JonImperial
@JonImperial 5 лет назад
There's no single book that will help you. When I took it (ARE 4.0 to 5.0), I used Ballast, Designerhacks and my favorite Amber Book! There are also playlists on RU-vid that you can research for each division. Have you started taking the test?
@DrewPaulBell
@DrewPaulBell 5 лет назад
+Jon Imperial is right. Everyone who has an opinion about which study resource is the best has studied more than one source. I liked ballast the best. I also used brightwood and black spectacles videos. I never used Amber Book but I have heard GREAT reviews recently. I think it’s good to find at least one resource that is in video format. That way it’s easy to play them in the morning while eating breakfast to start the day off right and they’re good to fall back on when you’re burned out and just can’t bring yourself to read a textbook after work.

Mr. Drew Paul Bell I am currently serving in the military but upon completion of my contract I want to study architecture. My question is do you know of any schools that offer an online substitute to their course. Even if this is only for a few classes that don’t involve studio. I would like to get a jump on my degree before I leave the military because I’m already 5 years graduated from high school. Thank you!

Hi @lucaslandis8334, look into the A.R.E. videos, get ahead by listening to these test prep video's. You'll learn about 25% of what you need to know for these tests in these videos. So Far, Blackspectacles is a good place to start. at the same time, get yourself into a decent university program. There are university's under a pilot program to achieve licensure at the end of graduation. Good Luck

Hi Drew! It has been 2 years since I have graduated and have been working for a Landscape architecture firm. So I want to start studying for my ARE 5.0. I would like to be professionally licensed and my firm would be using me for residentialarchitectural projects rather than doing landscape work. I bought PPI materials for it but if I have to purchase more then I will. It has been a while since I sat down and studied.So, My questions are how often should I study? and For how long each day?
@DrewPaulBell
@DrewPaulBell 6 лет назад
I just finished my AREs! I studied every day. I decided that I would study every day for 20 minutes MINIMUM. And there were some days when 20 min was all I could do but most nights it was more than that. I’d study for a month or two before the exam. I recommend PPI. It was the backbone for my studying. But I don’t think any one source is really enough. I also used Kaplan books for some of the 4.0 exams. (I did the transition plan) and Black Spectacles for almost all the exams I took. For the PPD and PDD exams I also studied textbooks I still had from school, graphic standards, and watched RU-vid videos made by bricklayers, masons, framers, window installers, and general contractors. Those two exams were beasts to me. It required a lot of sacrifice (especially from my social life) but my stamp just came in the mail yesterday and it feels so good to be done! And it can all be expensive, but don’t forget, the sooner you get your license, the sooner you start getting paid more.

Did they teach the difference between a technical qualification and an art and science qualification when studying architecture?

Hi Mr. Drew Paul Bell ...I'm 30 years old right now and I'm planning to take architecture.. But I'm a little bit worried.. Is it possible for me to go to school at my age? Or am I too late to take the course? Since I'm still single and looking for a future career...
@DrewPaulBell
@DrewPaulBell 6 лет назад
I went to school with a lot of people who were in their 30s. When you’re older your advantage is that you probably have better discipline and you’re smarter. A disadvantage may be that you can’t pull all-nighters like an 18 year old, but they aren’t even productive when they do that anyway and you might have the discipline not to have too. Check out the last bit of this video here: Q&A Measuring Buildings? Moving to the U.S.? Too Old for Architecture???ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DQdOgK-kRIE.html

@@DrewPaulBell I was 31 when I graduated architecture school. The thing about starting a bit later is you have more discipline.

@DrewPaulBell

No, I must not have been clear. You work in an office under a licensed architect until you get your own license. It’s like an “internship” or an “apprenticeship.” If you have a degree and no experience, you are not ready to open your own business and stamp drawings for buildings that the public is going to occupy (local governments enforce this by not granting building permits for buildings unless the drawings are stamped by a licensed architect). Even after they get their license, many people continue working within a firm instead of going out on their own and starting their own business. There’s plenty of ways to work in architecture without a license.

I wonder if anyone passed it without going to school for architecture
@DrewPaulBell
@DrewPaulBell 6 лет назад
You actually are not eligible to take the exams until you have the degree. There are a few states that will let you start testing if you’re enrolled in a NAAB accredited program and some states that let people take the test after 10 years of practice. But generally, they don’t approve your request for eligibility until you have NAAB accredited degree. They only recently started allowing people take the test before finishing their IDP/AXP hours.

I was taking my exams, but I am officially a Registered Architect now! I had to prioritize studying because the exams were so difficult. I’m at a conference this week. I’ll make a video talking about everything once I get back. :)
