This is my favourite thing ever in the medium of television. The only thing that could make it any better would be learning that they didn’t show it in Scotland during the original broadcast.

You don't know real pain unless you've had to watch the BBC Northern Ireland Children in Need specials.

+666deadman1988 Thank God they dumped NI Children in Need and just provide a typical 5-8 minute opt out on the hour just the same as the rest of the UK.

Hands down my favourite bit in the whole series. Even as a kid in London in the 70s I used to wonder why they didn't get to see the top films we did.

I first heard this on talk sport circa 2002. Tommy boyd was presenting the human zoo and a caller played this down the line. I loved it then and I love it 20 years later

I went to Norway in the 80s as a kid and was amazed how many channels they had. UK seemed very backward. However, I have a vague memory that all the channels were showing a 1000 part documentary on fishing or cross country skiing though (well 50 channels showing those, and another 50 for catch up)

Fantastic !! There was almost no live football in Scotland in the '60s and '70s (except the Scotland England game) because the SFA refused to allow it. That was the worst thing.

It wasn't just limited to BBC Scotland. If you lived in the Border Television region, even on the English side, we'd usually opt out for anything Scottish or Grampian had.

Could have been worse. If you lived in Dumfries you got Border Television, very much the southern side of the Border Television. Mind you, we were lucky - the poor sods in Stranraer and Girvan got UTV and BBC NI.

@Kungpriest82 I couldn't agree more. Statistics have shown that there is nothing distinct about social life in Scotland from the rest of Britain. Perhaps another thing that Scottish people are supposed to have in common is disdain for the English (which I personally don't have); which has markedly decreased ever since the introduction of digital television. So perhaps we (North of Britain) just used to be jealous of the rest of Britain's programmes.

I tried to watch this in Scotland but a sign flashed up saying ‘There now follows a clip from the Amando Iannuci shows except for viewers in Scotland who have their own RU-vid clips’ and ended up having to watch a ten hour rant from George Galloway on woke culture

Hmm...I think you misunderstand me. Also, I believe Armando to be suitably proud of his Scottish roots, just not necessarily of the general approach to televisual programming. Also, classing anyone as inherently racist is going to put any form of intelligent debate on the back foot.

Aye, it's really brilliant watching BBC News every day that had little or no relevance to Scotland. Headlining English NHS,Education,Transport and Sports stories, but we get our 2 minute "regional" news every half hour to keep us happy!
@glammer

Population of the world: over 6 billion; population of Scotland: less than 5 million. So Scotland gets more than its share of overall world news. It also gets its own programming, *cringe*Reporting Scotland*cringe* which most Scots ignore to watch English TV. There are more neds wearing Liverpool and Chelsea football shirts than Celtic and Rangers these days.

I revered this sketch for years, but sadly these days I yearn for Scottish opt-out to programming. "And now The Daily Politics with Andrew Neil. No exception for viewers in Scotland, you're going to have to endure that arsepipe just as the rest of the UK has to. What's that? You voted 2 to 1 against Brexit? Do you really think we give a shit? Bet you're pining for that Paul Coia quiz show now, you silly tartan idealists".

@Colkitto1
@Colkitto1 11 лет назад
Christmas Day Tsunami, The invasion of Iraq, Rape case in Delhi, US elections are relevant news stories the world over including Scotland. That's not my point, my point is I pay the same license fee as someone living in London but I don't receive the same service. Is that fair? I have no interest in what's happening with the English NHS, Education, Transport etc yet I'm force fed these stories every day. I want to know what's happening n my own country!

Funny in parts, but with an air of cringeworthiness that results from the political situation in Scotland. Many Scots from that era hate themselves because it was drummed into them they couldn't govern their own country. Nowadays we can watch TV from all over the world, but local programming is still underfunded.
@glammer
@glammer 6 лет назад
There isn't enough Scottish news for an hour at teatime. Now we've got government and nobody's any happier but at least there's Sky Sports or Match of the Day on the English BBC, so you don't have to wait until midnight when Sportscene has finished to see some decent footy.
