Hicks: "Oh, that's the grenade launcher. I don't think you wanna mess with that." Ripley: "You started this, show me everything. I can handle myself" Hicks: "Yeah I noticed"
Absolutely one of the best, pared with the smart gun Vasquez and Drake carry you can’t ask for a better futuristic and realistic weapon design in a movie
The sound of the pulse rifle is one of the most iconic sounds in scifi along with other greats. such as the roar of a Predator hunter, the scream of an Imperial Tie-Fighter, the sound of a phazer shot, and the sound of a Zaku's 120mm machine gun. Always been a fan of the design both look and spec wise as it always reminded me of Dutch's rifle from Predator and getting to use one of those in the AvP game in the PS3 certainly it had the best performance.
Beat me to it. The Weyland Yutani commandos that arrived at the Fiorina 161 prison facility to retrieve Ripley's Queen embryo in Alien 3 had M-41A pulse rifles too.
My favorite weapon in all of Sci Fi. I think many overlook just how forward thinking this thing is. It’s a smg, saw, grenade launcher and assault rifle rolled into one platform. In my opinion, this weapon, and the smart gun… are the standard to which all other science fiction weapon designs should be held to.
This. As tech inevitably becomes cheaper it should become significantly easier to combine or at least innovate them into a consolidated multipurpose small arm
The Kriss Vector has some visual similarities as does the Halo Assault Rife.. though that isn't the exacts same shape it "feels" similar in some ways to use in a game. Neither of them are caseless though.
As a gun guy, 4.9 kilos is a heavy weapon. The current U.S. military issued M4A1 is just a hair under 3.5 kilos with sling and a full magazine, which is slightly more than the unloaded M41A. Hell, an M1 Garand issued to U.S. Troops weighs in at a hair over 4.5 kilos! It's comparable to the current U.K. service Rifle, the SA80 (specifically the L85A2), which weighs 4.98 kilos. Not trying to be a pain in the neck, but just trying to provide some context. Lugging 4.9 kilos all day is a lot of weight.
Yep one of my favorite movie weapons. According to James Cameron, the body was based supposedly on the WW2 thompson sub machinegun. yep 99 round detachable box clip. 10mm caseless. with a 30mm pump action underbarell grenade launcher (4 round tube magazine internal)
I love the resemblance between the pulse rifle and the HK G36. Looks futuristic enough but modern enough too. Plus the G36 is s great rifle. Looks like it fits right in with this universe.
@MrHReviews any chance we could get an AVP 2(pc) playthrough like you did Alien isolation??? Would be fun. Keep up fantastic work! The sparkle has come back to your eyes since all the new alien stuff been dropping.
Their,s abloke on the M41A pulse rifle builders group owns ascreen used M41A pulse rifle at the end of the film only about 2 or3 of them we,re seen onscreen near the end of Alien 3
The lore of the M41 is paying homage to the M16 & Eugene Stoner. Stone was working for a smaller division of Armalite when he first designed the AR10. When the smaller AR15(M16 - military designation) went into service it suffered from a multitude of issues related to the use of improper ammunition propellant and design changes by the US Army. After these issues were corrected the M16 and later variants have become one of the most successful military small arms in history.
Cool to see the pulse rifle back in the Alien franchise! Obviously the Alien Romulus teaser trailer shows an earlier model but M41A pulse rifle was seen/used both ALIENS and Alien 3!
The M41 was so awesome that the original Bungie Halo Combat Evolved based that assault rifle around the Aliens M41. Also Aliens Earth Wars featured I believe the M42 which had a light mounted on top in front.
I modded and painted my Nerf limited Pulse Rifle. Looks great works amazing. I found a few utility details. Like safety rests for fingertips, a rest for your thumb on the trigger housing for using the grenade launcher. A few other details. Such a well thought out weapon for sci fi.
Awesome. Imagine having one of these puppies, feeling the badassery of it in your hands, only to discover the Xenomorphs acid blood. Unless you've got a way to produce fire your chances of surviving are slim at best and have only horrible ways to die when confronting them.
There is a good featurette on the making of aliens as part of the alien quadrology dvd collection . Aliens was made in the UK 🇬🇧, and the actual pulse rifle used in the movie was based from a british military service gun and then changed around to give it that futuristic look. The smart gun which was that larger machine gun mounted onto a harness that 2 of the marines used in aliens , german m88's from WW2 were used to make it in the movie . Quite interesting stuff.
It actual design, was based on a WW2 Thompson Sub-machine gun! Cameron choice it due to its impressive muzzle flash! 99 rounds though? Needs a much bigger magazine, or Twin magazine slots if you ask me?! 🤔
Yeah I always had issues with how the hell it holds 99 rounds. However looking at it again from the side profile, the muzzle is pretty high from the very bottom of the magazine and it is 10mm so I could believe that a double stack works
Strap a SPAS-80 pump action 12-gauge shotgun underneath a Thompson 'Tommy gun' SMG, give it a housing with incorporated carry handle - and you have one of the most iconic Sci-fi weapons in cinematic history.
Design based on the Franchi SPAS-12 semi-auto/pump shotgun, which was featured being wielded by Sarah Connor at the end of T2 Judgement Day against the T-1000.
I think there should be marine officer on board with the crew. That’s where she gets the weapon from. If not, that’s ok. Weyland-Yutani had pulse rifles in Alien 3 but of course it sounded different.
I think I posed the same question on another video. I wonder if these early pulse rifles fire the same ammo as the later models in 37 years' time? Without those 10mm armour piercing explosive tipped rounds, I can't see them doing much to a xenomorph. Their skin is like a kind if metal.
01:28 Tut tut, Nate. Incorrect. In ALIEN 3, The Weyland-Yutani commandos that arrived at the Fiorina 161 prison facility to retrieve the Xenomorph & Ripley's Queen embryo had M-41A pulse rifles too. They used them to shoot Morse in the leg, and killed Aaron after he attacked the 'real' Bishop, tearing off his ear.
As Aliens being my absolute favourite movie the iconic weapons and especially their unique sounds has never been matched since like the lightsaber "startup" it's just one of those oh so memorable sounds - having suffered the deepest disappointments with EVERY follow on film in the Alien franchise I have fingers crossed for Romulus BUUUT these days I am just tired of being disappointed or offended by the reboots, prequels, sequels or 'reimagining' of the things I was really attached to and have fond memories of - we shall see.
I believe in the end of Alien 3 the pulse rifle was seen briefly. This video said it only was used in aliens but it was a mistake. End of Alien 3 you can see them using and firing the pulse rifle for a brief moment. Minus the original gun sound. They were lazy and used a traditional gunfire sound.
Great video! Mr H, could you do a video on how the FTL technology works in the Alien universe? I never quite understood how long or by what means the ships travel between the stars. Cheers
I love this weapon, but as a firearms enthusiast, I place it in the category of impossible weapons. The caseless ammo would never "cook off" due to overheating, at most, the ammo would be ineffective or melt. But since it needs an electronic pulse to detonate (think plastique explosive and how it doesn't cook off, needs a pulse to set it off), it just wouldn't cook off. Also, the magazine is the size of a 20 round Thompson magazine. There is NO WAY you are sticking 99 rounds of 10mm anything inside such a small space. The U-Bend conveyor just adds complexity which doesn't make sense and would never work either. We don't use such systems today in magazines, so people in the future wouldn't use it either. Also, 10mm is a pistol or submachine gun round, NOT a rifle round, which are typically 8mm and smaller, and have a more conical shape for added velocity and range. The projectile itself of the pulse rifle is shaped like a handgun round. Not ideal for a rifle. Also, where are the MLOK or picatinny rails? I get it was designed in the 1980s before the advent of that, but a weapon like this would have some sort of modular attachment system for additional equipment, like laser designators, weapon lights, etc. Also, where are the advanced sighting systems? All the Marines in Aliens are basically using open sights. Even jihadists in the Middle East and guys in Ukraine can buy their open red dot sights or scopes. They are PROLIFIC today, but I guess people forgot they exist in the year 2179? But hey, it makes a cool sound! Love it!
10mm is just the bore diameter - perhaps the whole caseless cartridge including the propellant is roughly the length of a 20th/21st century brass rifle round? And whose to say there weren't advances in powder formulation that can deliver higher velocities in a smaller package?
@@finalascentwe’ve seen the actual (prop/fake) cartridge that is used on the M41, Mr H showed it in the video. It’s about the length of 22 mag cartridge. How are you fitting 99 of those in the 20 rnd Thompson mag? Never mind the propellant, I don’t have an issue with it, it’s plausible as HK made a caseless rifle. What about the other points? Care to address those?
The one in Alien Romulus is an F44AA not the same rifle and it is 20 years after Alien 1 and atleast 30 years before Aliens. In that time the Colonial Marines used a different rifle then the M41A which is why it is similar but not the same. F44AA has the auto aim of the smart gun but also no grenade launcher nor ammo counter read out only bars to indicate how much ammo you have left.
@@paperstacksfilms I am happy to help, saw the movie yesterday and loved it, also very happy to see the skin of the weapon is going to be in the VR Alien Rogue Incursion game.
