The major part of the Zhentarim these days is their Army. This time we will tackle their infrastructure and organization. Most players who pick the Zhentarim as their Faction will most likely not be part of this structure but will interact with parts of it.
Players will usually be part of the other 10% not directly involved in the work of military assignment.
The Zhentarim have changed their ways quite a bit since the fall of Zhentil Keep. They now serve as the backbone of protection for many small towns and traders. Where before, a young caravan master would have to hire whatever muscle he could find at the local inn, he can now reliably hire expertly trained, professional guards.
When a small hamlet had problems with a tribe of kobolds, they would once have to settle for whatever adventurers showed up at their doorsteps. They can now buy a solution where you get guaranteed results at a pre-established price.
While true, the Zhentarim will also work as bodyguards for less scrupulous members of society, this is more a show of their neutrality and objectivity in accepting offers.
The Zhentarim deliver an excellent service to anyone willing to pay.
