To be fair the Raptors' whole shtick is that they said "fuck that" to all the ritual and dogma of other chapters. Going for full practicality and using conventional tactics. That animation is one of my favourites.

This way of armouring can also be seen for ceremonial purposes or depends on the chapter. This fits well with the black crusaders, and if you wanna go practical like Raptors, then possibly dark angels.

"I am surprisingly pleased by this." Yep. Same here. I never expected to see a proper armouring ritual. Emphasis on Ritual here. The chants, the iconography, the props, the detail. If I didn't know better (well, I don't know really) I'd argue the guy behind Astartes might have done this since alot of attention to detail is here and cinematography is also beautiful just like in Astartes.

The thing about Ultramarines is that no one can say they aren't one of the most "high functioning" Chapters. They are supersoldiers that still hold reasonable connection with the regular human.. though not nearly as much as the Salamanders whom practically live among their people as if they were near normal themselves. Still, the Ultramarines - and their successor chapters - most seem to keep that same contact and a family rises to fame merely by having a son becoming a Space Marine of one of the chapters. In a way it makes them the most relatable. Most other chapters that still show care for humans have something about them that makes them less relatable. The Ultramarines are simply supersoldiers. They are the baseline.. if the most successful chapter can be considered "baseline" to begin with. Also they are the only ones with their Primarch. It helps shifting merchandise and it makes it much easier for someone new to the setting (like myself) to actually find a foothold to build upon. Introducing me to the story of Warhammer by making it look like the Templars were the "main characters" would be awful in making me understand anything at all. I would have thought of WH as merely medieval warriors/paladins in a space setting. Or the Salamanders.. where I would then be thinking all Space Marines were humble and kind.. which they definitely are NOT. With Ultramarines you at least get a good balance. Also they have Cato Sicarius. Need I say more?

I have seen both animations and I loved both. I feel like some of the ways the armor was put together, especially the helmet, felt a bit off from the usual WH40k Techno-stagnant esthetics. Same I thought about the proportions of the space marine, too well fitting and less like the hunking mass of muscles a space marine should be like. Though for both of these we got shown that this a Primaris Marine, which are known to be much better proportioned and received actual "NEW" or updated tech by our favorit not-at-all-tech-heretic Belasarius Cawl. Another issue is that I feel they could have made this animation as the FIRST armoring of a newly graduated aspirant from the scout company. The first awakening of his armor, the first time they dawn their new wargear, in such a context I would have felt this ceremony to be very fitting. In other occasions i feel it should be alot less ceremonial and quicker. Anyhow, a very beautiful animation.
@broutefoin
@broutefoin 2 года назад
the helmet being 3 parts fit 40k just fine, plenty of models even before the primaris range had head options without the top part of the helmet (just the vox casters and ear pieces), make sense lore-wise from a practical point of view for it to be segmented with all the subsystems crammed in those things to, if you took damage to the face plate only, then it can be isolated for maintenance and repair, and finally, the way i see it, the helmet when assembled here, likely doesn't come apart in pieces easily the field without tools/facilities, so that it's funtionally one piece until a techpriest or techmarine get its hands on it again.

Quote from the escapist - “[Blizzard co-founder] Allen Adham hoped to obtain a license to the Warhammer universe to try to increase sales by brand recognition,” said Warcraft producer Patrick Wyatt. “Warhammer was a huge inspiration for the art-style of Warcraft, but a combination of factors, including a lack of traction on business terms and a fervent desire on the part of virtually everyone else on the development team (myself included) to control our own universe nixed any potential for a deal. That's not the only source I found that on. On the revise side GW wasn't happy with the way the project was going so everyone decided to pull out. Now for that to happen and then GW ask them to do Starcraft is weird. I know everyone says Zerg look like Nids, Marines look like Astartes, but that's not proof of a collab that's proof of, well, aggressive inspiration.

Don't mean to be "that guy", few things to point out here. It's not just Raptor; this animation is also a very close copy to the Grey Knight animation put out 7 years back for the Lord Inquisitor trailers. Funny how that whole animation series was discontinued... seeing this now, I don't want to scream rip off, but yeah I'm kinda screaming rip off. Even the end part with the whole eyes lighting up, wow GW, did ya think we wouldn't notice? To think, seeing stuff like this, shared and enjoyed by millions, was once free. At the very least give us something new to look at GW, not rehashes of already great and established animations. Just saying how many ways can we rehash a Spacemarine suiting up? Off the top of my head, we got at least 3 decent vids floating on youtube pertaining to exactly this style of 40k vid, now GW does it once and what? Pats on the back? For no less (and I really don't want to get on this bandwagon but...) a Primaris Marine, one of the most controversial additions to 40k so far, one that GW has been desperately trying to push onto it's 40k fanbase. Just saying. The Emperor Protects

@dagonofthedepths
@dagonofthedepths 2 года назад
Honestly the guy that made Raptor was borrowing heavily from Star Craft 2 (and to be fair there is a lot of student animations that did Star Craft 2's suiting up scene before they did) so I can't say he should get credit from the shots. Also working alone, you run into a workload problem when you have multiple actors on screen so there's that. That said, if GW commissioned this and was ok with it, that weirds me out. It looks fine but it kind of doesn't make sense. That armor is made from way to many separate pieces and most of the lore and books I read, it works like sci fi plate armour. This is overly complicated. Like the helment is the obvious part, right? Like why would you ever design a helmet that needs to come apart in 3 pieces like that instead of just a helment. Besides, there is a ton of books where a marine takes off a gauntlet or helmet in the field.
@BaronVonMott
@BaronVonMott 2 года назад
On that point about established lore regarding the armour (specifically about removing pieces of it in the field), I feel obligated to point out that Primaris Marines like this guy are wearing Mk 10 gear, so that's two iterations removed from the Mk 8 armour that "classic" Marines wear, on top of being intended from the start to have a significantly different occupant. And this is symbiotic, fully articulated, power-assisted armour for a ten-foot-tall genetically modified demigod. Who are we to say what would be "overly complex" for that kind of design brief?
@dagonofthedepths
@dagonofthedepths 2 года назад
@@BaronVonMott well 2 things (really 3 but that's not directly related). First the problem isn't so much the complexity, it's how it's assembled. Like the breast plat, The reason the beast plate is a solid chunk on old armor like that is because if you start adding all these interact parts, your introducing weak points on the armor so you want your seams to A be as few as possible, and B be in places your enemy can't attack the. In the case of B that can be either in places it's hard to reach or by overlapping armor plates which this does neither. Yes the armor by our perspective will be complex but in the way protection is that's not hard to see. It's hard metal (ceramic but same thing) having it assemble like this is would only done so it can fall apart. Which can be useful, like crash frames for cars do that, but the way it's done here would only hurt the integrity of the armor and the safety of the wearer. Second, we have a lot of books already on hoe they get in and out of MKX armor. Primaris have taken off parts of their armor. Like a guy took off a gauntlet to do a palm reader. A book I was reading the other day, A primaris fell through a roof and messed up his helmet's autosenses so he just took off the helmet to see better. The way they have it here, he couldn't do that. Also they way they have it here, If he got shot in the helmet the top part will go flying off if hit or the bottom part will get driving into his mouth which is why you don't make a helmet like that. 3rd one is there are depictions of Armour of Fate getting removed and it isn't that segmented and that's Primarch war plate made by the guy that made the Mark X. Reason why I don't like this is it's complicated just to be complicated which to me is bad sci fi and doesn't help anything other than to look cool It also means you need a bunch of serfs and an arming station to do it. With is fine, don't get me wrong, but it causes problems. This aside there are other problems with Astertes armor that a lot of writers put in that doesn't make sense but this is kind of adding to the pile.
@Gozkiel
@Gozkiel 2 года назад
@@dagonofthedepths it isn't that complicated, the design is made to easily change from standard to gravis or phobos armor and still work effectively. The helmet for example may assemble in pieces but still act as one on the battlefield, we've seen miniatures designed without the top part of their helmet or have a fully assembled helmet hanging on their waist without problem. Even the helmets atop the chaos terminators seem fully intact despite the damages. I assume every other part of their armor works in a similar manner, considering they're literally linked with their armor I assume they can control those miscellaneous attachments. As for the seams I don't think that's a problem, the out-most layer of the armor is ceramite and it won't bend the same way metal would that could hurt the user if it were to be damaged. Perhaps the adamantine and plasteel underneath the ceramite would be a problem but the reinforced undersuit provides extra protection and it would take several well placed hits on the same area for that to start becoming a problem.
@dagonofthedepths
@dagonofthedepths 2 года назад
@@Gozkiel It still doesn't make sense it's that modular that it has to be assembled on the marine that way. Yeah, you can interpret the mask or helmets being as shown her, but standardized parts make way more sense. You want you gear to be interchangeable just for logistical reasons, so you use standardized parts but in this case, you're making flip down eye lenses because......you want a mask? That's dumb. All that does is give the helmet less armor right between the eyes and makes the eye protection thinner. My problem is it's modular in a way that doesn't help the user. Like yeah, they can control the whole armor, they constantly mag lock part of kit to it in books but it's not energy shields we're talking hard static plates. Plus it looks like he can't take it off himself. When you animate armor like this it makes it look like it's designed to break away from the wearer. Which can work if it has a special method to defecting damage, like energy shields or the armor is reactive, like there are charges under the first layer. Or it's an attachment like a should missile launcher or something. Then yeah, go nuts. But this is hard, well, for lack of a better word, steel. all this does is add to the things that can go wrong for almost no benefit. (Also, the fact there is nothing on the inside of those plates didn't help kind of makes it look like their locked sheet metal to it.) I don't think you can apply real word ceramics to ceramite but regardless I think it's more the other way around. I think the ceramite would crack and because on some parts like the shin, it's attached only in 3 places, it'll just fall off. But really I don't think you can really say one way or the other. The under suite, however, does absolutely nothing. I hate this but I have never read a single thing about the under suite ever stopping anything. And by this, there are books where a shiv powered by an emaciated human punctures it.
