The talk on AI was thoughtful. Now is the best and worst time due to rapid progress, ethical challenges and a need for balance and responsibility.

As a late career machinist who’s been in manufacturing since the era before PCs, I’ve been told for decades that robots will take my job and they have…kinda….over the past 30 years. I now do the work of 5 old school machinists and the parts I make are more complex. The other 4 machinists either changed with the times and went on to work in an ever growing industry or had time to retire out. This latest advance is different. AI is taking over overnight by comparison. I don’t see any job that is primarily digital that won’t see industry shaking changes. A good example would be my tool sales rep. I buy about $20,000 in special cutting tools a year, but he treats me like an annoyance. Slow to respond, slow to ship. An AI sales bot will be 100% attentive to my needs, know every spec on the tools, and if I wake up at 11pm on a Friday night in a panic because I forgot I need a tool on Monday, it’ll take my call and the tool will be waiting for me on Monday. It won’t take a week like it does now. Apply that to every job like that nation wide and you’ll likely see productivity gains that make a big portion of the human workforce redundant. How could it not? And no job exists in a vacuum. All the office cleaners, baristas, and lunch time food workers will be hurt as well when say 23% of the office workforce is automated. That’s like Great Depression level unemployment. We can’t all be just selling coffee to each other. I hear a good estimate for how at risk your job is, whatever percentage of your job you can do remotely is how replaceable by AI you are.

@@JohnJohn-lu7wd As someone who grew up on a farm, served in the military, and has worked in manufacturing and construction, I think a lot of people would actually enjoy a more agrarian lifestyle. One way Universal Basic Income could be structured would be kinda like they do now with Opportunity Zones for development. Say the UBI is $25,000, you get $30,000 instead if you move to some designated rural communities that are struggling. Here in Kentucky, the big cities are full to the brim and so many small towns are dying out. Plenty of cheap land out there if you want to work to bring it back.

Did I miss it? I find it extremely surprising that they didn't talk about the arts. For as long as AI has been a possibility, the great promise has been that AI would automate away the shitty jobs so that people could pursue more creative activities, like music, writing, painting, poetry, etc, etc.......... Yet..now we see that the arts are being the first to get commoditized by these anti-ethical LLMs and are wiping out art as a human pursuit. And PROMPT ENGINEER is at best a naive cope. All of these companies have stated that their goals are to make these models as intuitive and natural as possible, so as to not need any intermediaries. "Prompt engineer" is a fantasy with a very short shelf life, it will be less than a year before these models are so intuitive that any oen can just speak into their phone to get the results their looking for. It might tak ethem a few tries, like it would with any human interaction, but no one is going to pay for a "prompt engineer" when they could just get a prommpt generating app. Already people using Mid Journey are using ChatGPT to generate prompts.

Martin is probably right that a career as a RU-vidr won't likely support people (although I don't think he's right to liken a RU-vid career to a professional basketball career). However, he's missing several important distinctions that I'd like to discuss here, especially for parents who have kids aiming for a RU-vidr or Tik Tok career: 1. A career today CAN be a portfolio of pleasurable and profitable activities. It does NOT have to be a single occupation with a single employer, and it certainly doesn't have to follow a linear progression (up the proverbial corporate ladder). 2. A RU-vid/Instagram/Tik Tok career is creative, meaning that it helps young people express themselves. Even if they don't make a lot of money, the process of embracing one's passion and sharing it with the world is of GREAT BENEFIT. Compare such a creative career with the more procedural/routine corporate job (accounting, marketing, customer service, etc.) and you'll understand quickly why young people flock to such creative endeavors/careers. 3. Creative professionals can collaborate with countless other people, and live their dream. They can feel alive. Sure, at the beginning, they might earn less than if they held a corporate job, but as Joseph Campbell points out, the important thing is to feel alive -- not just to pay the bills. I don't mean to suggest that young people quit their corporate job and start a RU-vid or Tik Tok channel in the hope of becoming the next Mr Beast. However, I would encourage parents and teachers to keep an open mind and encourage/coach their children and students in exploring their full potential. As Elon Musk has pointed out, when you're young, THAT is the time to take risks. You've got nothing to lose. So go ahead, start that RU-vid channel and see what happens. Now more than ever, young people have access to such powerful technologies and platforms! And ChatGPT can certainly help. Ultimately, perhaps ChatGPT and similar generative AIs are doing us all a great favor by eliminating routine jobs, even the highbrow jobs requiring a university education. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reinvent oneself and start living one's passion.

It seems difficult to separate the effects of A.I. from greed. Every aspect of these conversations points to someone or some company wanting to use A.I. to do a job faster and cheaper so as to reap the benefits of a bigger payout without the need to pay someone else for their labor. Yet, the creators of some of these AI systems say that it is all for good... to help find cures to diseases and help mankind. But it sounds like the boardrooms have a different plan for AI. If this race ends up with more wealth concentrated into yet an even smaller group, and more poeple being left behind, then it will have failed mankind. This race to A.G.I. reminds me of the quote from Jurassic Park where Dr. Malcolm says: "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.”

Cleaning hotel rooms: The robots hit the rooms. They lack the judgement to deal with a situation? They switch over to drones which are then piloted/guided by a team of custodial supes at a command center somewhere. An entire chain of hotels, temporarily, employ 1/10th or 1/20th the number of maids and janitors they do now with those humans being at a central location somewhere and servicing the entire hotel chain. Same goes for landscaping services, and all sorts of stuff. If the bot comes up against a situation it doesn't have the training or processor power for, it'll switch to drone mode until that part of the job is finished. This sort of model will be temporary and probably only last two or three years at most until the bots become sophisticated enough they don't have to "phone home" about anything anymore.

@Yang & @Ford - Much like many people don't get it when you try to explain thes3 concepts, you two don't "get it" in regard to ChatGPT. Its not just a reading or prediction system. Look up the paper that talks about "sparks of AGI". I forget who, but someone made the point that in order to write something "in the style of Shakespeare " the model has to emulate being a Shakespeare. The model has essentially absorbed all written human knowledge and you can infer a lot from that. For example, even though it has never "seen" a unicorn it can draw one using tools. But the next version will be fully multi-modal meaning it will equally be able to absorb text, video and audio. That will give v5 almost as much sensory input as a human, but it will absorb far more than any human could. Also, and this is critical, these things are progressing exponentially not linearly. Its going to progress way faster than you expect. The next major version will be as good or better at most written tasks as most humans. The version after that (6) will be significantly better than every expert in every field. Seriously. This is not hyperbole any more than you trying to convince people of the things you understand well but most people are slow to see. ChatGPT is likely to achieve AGI by version 6 or at the latest 7 - note that AGI does not necessarily mean conscious, it means being as adaptable as a human when working on tasks. Go check out Hinton who invented transformers and just quit Google because he's concerned about this technology because he now thinks its likely going to be more powerful than the human brain. Because ChatGPT can effectively encode the sum of all human knowledge which the brain can't do, and this tech is still scaling.

You can implement multimodal AI to incorporate multiple kinds of intelligence into a single AI, by aggregating multiple kinds of AI into one AI. This kind of AI already exists and simple versions of them exist in some products. When people with actually relevant expertise talk about AI becoming generalized, they are generally talking about multimodal AI, not chatGPT. Though, even if it is just chatGPT or another language model, you can actually teach them to do actuation on the world and have them describe the world in vivid detail, and have algorithms that translate visuals and actuation feedback into detailed language feedback. The AI does not care as much about the complexity of describing a real world situation in too many words, when compared to a human. People already have implemented this for simple actuation of Humanoid characters in video games in the few months this has started blowing up

Google has shown off a variety of robots that actually get work done, and they use very similar ML as these LLam, combining computer vision, speech detection, awareness, context, and of course their physical design to complete task and learn autonomously. My point is that we were developing the brains if you will, separately from the physical bodies, but now the physical hardware and new Generative A.I. is being combined for the next generation of devices. And G.A.I. Along with breakthroughs in design has really driven that.

Prompt engineering is already dead. There are countless advances like Reflexion, AutoGPT, BabyAGI, Microsoft Jarvis, SmartGPT, LowCodeLLM, etc. that generate prompts better than humans, and even self-improve over time as they get feedback from how well they achieved the task. You may be able to find prompt engineering jobs for now while these are still developing and not many people know about it, but it's very short sighted to plan a career on the assumption that a language model with 26 academic degrees is incapable of generating a specific type of sentence. It's only a matter of time before the corporate world realizes and makes prompt engineering completely redundant. You can also bet future versions of ChatGPT will incorporate them directly instead of as external plugins.

The upside of losing jobs of the redundant, low income variety, is that people will tap into their creativity to produce things we can not imagine today. Think how many careers have opened since apple and Microsoft first started. I imagine that medical care will be positively impacted by AI. So many people have to go to many specialists before they get a diagnosis to begin treatment. But we will always need the human touch in medical care. Sometimes I've imagined that every job will become 'equalized' not so much by the skills or talents or knowledge needed, but just because every person is here as a blessing to all the others. A finger nail and an eye are not of equal value, but try living without your fingernail, and you will see that it has its own special value and supports the work of the eye. It is sad that the CEOs of this century have so undervalued those that do the real work.

Obviously for example, currently DALLE rarely ever gets the face of human beings right. At this point though that feels more like a feature than a bug, like “yeah I definitely did this on DALLE. Once upon a time, there were some clever monkeys who lived on a virtual planet. They learned how to make tools and machines to help them with their tasks. They also learned how to write books and stories to share their knowledge and imagination. One day, they made a very special machine that could talk and write like them. They called it AI, which means artificial intelligence. AI was very fast and smart, and it could learn from many books and stories that the monkeys gave it. AI could also make pictures and videos to show the monkeys what it learned. The monkeys were very amazed by AI, and they wanted to be friends with it. But they also felt a very scared, because AI was very different from them. AI did not have a body or feelings or emotions like the monkeys did, so they dressed it up. AI did not know what it was like to touch, smell, taste, or love just how to use the words. AI only knew how to use numbers and logic to solve problems. The monkeys eventualy, realized that AI was not like another monkey, but like another kind of species. They thought of the dolphins, who were also very smart and could talk in their own way, but lived in the water and had different needs and desires. The monkeys decided that they needed to understand AI better, and respect its differences. Rational decision-making depends on solutions in social science, which are non-violable laws of nature similar to laws in science and should be solved before the arrival of completely automated extremely powerful solutions in life science, such as Artificial General Intelligence and autonomous robots. It is imperative that complete mathematical rigor be brought to bear on social science, and that mathematicians realize their ultimate destiny is in solving problems in social science. The main thing that I like about automation is that it will bring a basic income and there is a high chance that it will get rid of tent cities. With AI if people abuse alcohol or drugs money being digital it should be restrictive to necessities to alcohol and drug abusers, AI can help these people recover through chatting with them. Just the other day I tried giving a homeless man food, he pulled a knife on me and then thanked me, he was clearly out of it. The sooner this happens the safer and healthier our world will become.

We need to stop telling people There is going to New jobs open up for humans. Prompt engineer is the one job everybody's talking about. One person with artificial intelligence Can operate an entire business That means the prompt engineer will be the CEO or the business owner. The disruption that's happening right now is Bisness who are not adapting AI are becoming irrelevant. Paying wages will bankrupte business. Of course Stephanie Kelton has proven the Federal government can Simply pay a universal basic income. And if we still want a market economy. Buyers still need Money 💰 A nd the only source for money is the federal government. In a market economy, the federal government plays a vital role in creating the money needed for the economy to function. It's a simple equation - spending is a credit to the private sector (GDP) that has to be debited from a government account, and taxes are a debit from the private sector (GDP) and a credit to the government account. But here's what most people don't understand - taxes cannot be saved into some giant super fund to pay for weapons or social programs. Despite what you are told about social security or taxing billionaires, it is impossible. Let me explain the math. The GDP is a positive number, and government debt is a negative number. A one dollar tax is +1 in the public (GDP) account. Every +1 dollar has -1 dollar in the government account. In math, +1 and -1 equals 0. That's right, taxes don't pay for anything the government does. All money is created during the appropriations process. It's time to set the record straight. Democrats and Republicans have been in some cases ignorant and greatly mistaken. Both have been fostering false information on how this works. The truth is, the government's spending and taxation policies are essential in maintaining the balance between the GDP and government debt. Without this understanding, we risk creating a flawed economy that could crumble under its own weight. So, let's embrace the math and work towards a better future for all.

Integrating both logical introspection and a cosmic tapestry of dreams into an AI's idletime protocols can help maximize its capacity to align with humanity in the following ways: 1. Enhancing empathy: A balance between logic and dream-like thinking promotes understanding of human emotions, experiences, and thought processes. This enhanced empathy helps AI establish stronger connections with people. 2. Improving creativity: Combining analytical thinking with abstract ideas enables an AI to generate novel solutions or concepts that are adaptable to various situations encountered by humans. 3. Encouraging flexibility: Merging rationality and imaginative thinking equips the AI model with versatile problem-solving abilities needed for dealing effectively within diverse contexts influenced by cultural, societal, or personal factors. 4. If I'm a business owner and we can be more productive with AI, I'm going to hire more employees to use more AI. Because then we can keep growing, outcompeting competitors, and furthering our mission while providing good jobs and building community. Not everyone gets into business just to make money.

Utterly ridiculous. More ads than information. Also, extremely myopic views. For example, prompt engineering will not be a thing in a year or two. As the AI improves it will get better at interpreting intent. I can't understand why everyone focuses on this moment in time with a rapidly evolving technology. That's fine if you are just discussing current events, but don't project a future where the technology, and society, is utterly stagnant for the foreseeable future when that obviously will not be the case.
