Right the whole issue is just there was nothing unclear about this sucession. Viserys named his daughter heir and never revoked that decision up to his dying breath. If one was to follow the widow's law: a father may not disinherit the children of a first marriage in favour of children from a second marriage. By naming Rhaenyra heir Viserys explicitly made it part of her inheritance. If he truly wished to have Aegon succeed him he would have unmade the widow's law and named Aegon heir in front of all the lord's of the realm and have them swear obeisance to Aegon but he never did so.

@@spearshake4771 you cant pick your successor else the whole issue of line of succession is completely useless, which is one of THE most important law preventing chaos. Viserys tried changing the most basic law without anything to back it up. He could have changed the law that the eldest child got to inherit but he did not. Because he knew most lords would not agree because unlike kings who can be lazy bums, lords would have to march armies in a war or else cause the downfall of their family. So he tried to make an exception to the rule. Overestimating his power as the king and underestimating the power of lords to follow his will after his demise. Any smart person could see the harm in making "exceptions" in the line of succession for the throne which will affect EVERY succession after it and all this when there is a legitimate first born son available. Making an exception to deny him his birthright?

@@Ntnt11 Right only at the time he named Rhaenyra heir he had not other heirs aside from Daemon (who at that point was untrustworthy). By the time he had gotten a son he was bound to the widows law which I just mentioned which was codified law. The primogeniture rule you speak of was not codified into law but merely precedent followed by the Andals and First Men in Westeros. In order of importance codified law trumps mere precedent (unwritten laws and customs). He did not have to change the law because codified law was already supporting his decision. However after the Dance it was basically an unwritten rule that a female would never be allowed to rule unless there was no other male alternative. He couldn't have denied Aegon his "birthright" because at the time he made his decision Aegon did not even exist. My point being that all these lords who claimed that Aegon was the rightful heir only had precedent and the westerosi common law to back their claim vs the established codified widows law.

Male children normally come before any female children even with the widows law. If rhaenyra had been male the precedent and established law would make her his heir but since she is female aegon would be his heir normally. The widows law is to ensure that children and wives are provided for. It gets murky because how absolute is the kings power. As a king viserys was one of the most tyrannical of westeros (ignoring custom and laws) due to acting without regard for the law that other targaeryen kings did follow.

No, the male preference for heirs was not part of Valyrian/Targaryen traditions, it was only put forward when Jaehaerys became King. All points in the book lead to this.

because viserys had sons, not one, but three. they all accepted her when she was his only heir, but once aegon was born everyone accepted as fact that he was the new heir xD

There had never been a female monarch before so the old king asked every lord to vote and they voted for Viserys. This forever precedents women never inheriting the throne.

Everyone seems to forget about Alys karstark. And cersei inheriting casterly rock after tywins death and tyrion being sentenced to death. Also brienne is technically her father's heir. And catelyn was seen as heir to riverrun until edmure came along, not the blackfish

​@@mikered1974 wdym, lord grover tully declared the Riverlands in favor of Aegon, but because he was so old his grandson didn't call the banners. the starks only went for it after negotiations, mainly because they were promised a Targaryen bride, not because of some oath. (not all starks are ned), obviously, the Arryns would side with the blacks, they have blood ties and the ruling noble was a lady, if she supported Aegon it would weaken her claim. the westerlands and stormlands were mostly green, and the Tyrells stayed out of the conflict. my point is, almost no one of the great houses stayed true to that oath. and if lord Grover wasn´t an old man the war would be 3 vs 2 kingdoms + Hightower and friends. also, the ironborn are always a wild card, they´ll fight anyone, in fact, I belive that after the war lord greyjoy continued to sack even tho the blacks ordered him to stop, he only did so when one of his salt wives cut his throat.

@@nunyabiznes33 Yeah but that was back in the First Men days. The Andals knew how to build decent ships and so now the Vale has it's own fleet. A fleet so strong that's it's in the top 5 strongest in Westeros ranking last just behind the Westerlands but still respectable.

Jeyne is Probablly Grandaughter of Rodrick Arryn who died in 97 AC with his Son his Successor in the same year Rhaenyra was Born Jeyne is born in year 93 AC which is also the same year Aemma married Viserys.
