Stumbled across “Merantau” many years ago, and was very impressed. Then when I saw “Mile 22” I was so happy to see how far he had come...all the way to America and right into Hollywood from Indonesia!
i get to know one of my top idol Iko Uwais a whole lot better up close and personal.....quirky yet very humble so down to earth...great interview..Scott Iko Collab movie again !🥰🤩🥰
Hopefully one day these following great actors would accept... Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Stathan, Bruce Willis, Jean Claude Van Damme, Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung , Bolo Yeung, among others.
You know what, Iko was a professional football player who play in the 2nd division of the Indonesian league called Persijatim (east Jakarta football club), but the club got financial problem, and Iko had to leave the club, after that he became a driver at a communication company, silat is a tradition in iko family where iko's grandfather is a silat master who has a silat school in Jakarta, iko himself studied silat since the age of 10
I laughed that Scott didn’t want to talk about Mile 22. We all know his feeling on Bourne-style camera work and Mile 22 was that, on steroids. Completely wasted Iko’s talents. Amazing interview and insight into a true gentleman and master.
Not seen Mile 22 because Hollywood can't make martial arts movies. I'm starting to think they get the like of Jackie Chan, Jet Li etc to Hollywood to remove the competition for their action stars. Not dissing Keanu Reeves, he does a great job in the John Wick Series, Iko for example could take the action to the next level.
@@walterbishop1697 I would agree with most of that! It’s sad that mostly anything outside of 87eleven work in martial arts is poorly conceived. Mile 22 was a sad example of Peter Berg’s desire to be Michael Mann and he just comes off as chaotic as hell. Take a Vicodin and pull your lens back to allow one of the best martial artists working on film to do his thing🙄. If you find some of the Mile 22 behind-the-scenes online, Berg was trying to instruct Iko in fight scenes... please watch The Raid and know your place, Mr. Director😂
@@walterbishop1697 It's not like Hollywood can't do proper martial arts action movies, it's the problem that they don't want to put the work in to it and hire directors who actually know what the hell they're doing. Instead, they hire directors based not on merit but based on political choices. Just check out that crappy Harley Quinn movie, they hired a female director, because Margot Robbie wanted a wamen director for her ''feminist comicbook movie'' and they end up, hiring the John Wick director to come in at the last minute and re-shoot all the action sequences from scratch!
@juggernaut breaker Actually, in Indonesia pencak silat is rarely practiced without actually fighting for real, to the point of using traditional weapons (like karambit). I don't know about Scott or Jaa, but Iko, Cecep, and Yayan can actually fight for real. Especially Cecep, since he is very well-versed in using actual sharp weapons and was even an International silat competition champion in the 90s

Two most humble and talented martial artists of the globe!
Iko can speak english better now. Impressive. To be honest, when iko interview in english, i always worry if he make unconnected statement. Great improvement iko. If iko learn public speaking more intense, it will make him more great in promoting Silat.
@@meong9078 iya sama wkwk..tp liat perkembangan Iko dari 2009 sih udah bagus bgt sekarang bhs inggrisnya. paling tinggal pronunciationnya aja dibenerin biar lebih jelas lg ngomongnya.
@@artamielsw6719 I agree that would be nice maybe Scott Adkins and Iko Uwais should do a Showdown in Little Tokyo reboot together it would be AWESOME making it like the original 1991 movie.
Scott sir, even being a high class martial artist and actor, you are so humble , far away from arrogance and down to earth. You always brings us to someone to whom we always wanted to know more A world class series featuring legends Thankyou so much to you Just 3 words:- Love you Boyka Another 3 words:- You are amazing
Really great, scott especially nailed and eloquently put what i feel really makes iko such a great bloke. The humility on both sides and how iko sells vulnerability is nail on the head. I would love to see scott trying to have the same conversation with steven seagal....just imagine that😂
Iko is such a nice, humble guy. He's a very talented Martial Artist and everyone speaks of him, in a positive manner. I'm glad he's doing Snake Eyes. A Wu Assassins film? I'll be sure to watch that, as soon as it drops. TERRANCE OUT
All good, none of those are legends. Bruce, Lau Kar Leung, Jackie, Sammo, Yuen Biao, Gordon Liu, Hsiao Hou, Fu Sheng, The Venoms - These guys are legends.
@@Grandmastergav86 I think Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, and Scott Adkins deserves a place with all those old time greats. Remember modern movies rarely have the time to film as in the 70/80s, especially Adkins. Sadly there's not the same demand these days for these movies either, which makes it harder to get funding for pure martial arts films. Back in the 70s/80s there was so much competition to make the best movie, the bar was so high. I think Jaa, Iko and Adkins best works are in the same league, sadly haven't made as many great films due to the era.
I was first introduced to Iko when watching The Raid and was totally blown away. The story, the choreography, and of course Iko's character. I agree with you Scott that Iko has a likeable face. He doesn't really have that tough man fighter look but he has that intense fire and determination in his eyes. Also, that he gets hurt a lot and struggling in the film makes the character feel human (albeit the choreographed moves does seem superhuman, lol). All that makes us root for him even more. Since The Raid and Raid 2, I have been eagerly waiting to watch anything with him in it. Good job on the interview Scott and sending wishes of continuous success to Iko and the pencak silat movement in the world. Love from Malaysia ~
so glad Scott is doing this interviews with legends at such young age like Iko, finally will get a kinda mini story doc of the best martial artists of our generation \m/
When Iko talked about the importance of Pre-Viz I'm like "THANK YOU! OMG" Look. Hollywood. The stunt / choreo guys are the ones who know where the highs and the lows of their dance, because they're the ones doing it! They know which moves needs to be highlighted, which ones need to be hidden. Listen to them!
I'm about 20 minutes in. What a modest guy. I've loved everything I've seen Iko in except mile 22 with the bad editing but even then he makes the film better.
@@kettlebells-ez9xi I didn't find it a bad film bu tthe fight scenes just arent as good as his others. Try watch one from the raid then compare it to mile 22
The raid is a master piece. Some of the best fight scenes. Many of them left me with my mouth open. Great choreography. Awesome talented man. Loved seeing all of them in triple threat. These guys would be praised by Bruce Lee himself. They are that good.
Technically better than Bruce Lee 🥱 Bruce Lee make his films with full speed and the scenes wasn’t cut to be faster. Bruce have the complete packet with footwork and this elegance and the body and the good looks. I don’t seen this by Iko. But you have your hero. Bruce Lee make low budget movies that stand the time. He is the epitome of a fighter in general and material arts actor.
Most MMA fighters are just simply fighters or natural athletes who learned how to punch and kick in a gym. Matt Mitrione, Greg Hardy, Derrick Lewis etc. are simply natural athletes with great strength and agility. Most can’t even land a good side kick. Martial artists are mostly serious and dedicated students of the art rather. GSP, Khabib, Machida, Anderson Silva, Thompson, Valentina and Demian Maia are examples of MMA fighters seriously dedicated to their art.
Martial arts are very different with professional combat sports. In professional combat sports you are always in competitive atmosphere. Rivalry makes some pro fighters take arrogant role to hype themselves, disturb opponent psychologically, or entertain the audience. While in martial arts, mostly it's about self discipline. That's why most of martial artists are humble.
Iko, the reason why the raid movies are so awesome is because you HAVENT been trained by actors. Your character seems like a real person not some characiture
@@ertugrulkarslioglu4271 i dont think so. Maybe because betawinese language many influenced by chinese and arabian language. So thats why iko's accent similar to jacky. But differnt with tony as a thai
I gotta say, both of your, Mr. Uwais and Mr. Adkins, are really likeabke chaps! I'm enjoying every chapter of TAOA and every chapter becomes my favorite one. You can tell Iko is struggling to speak in english and I can't thank him enough for the effort. Thanks for the hard work, both of you!
The Raid is a pleasant surprise and a Gift for a Martial Arts lovers anywhere in the world. Loved It. Love the show as well. Thanks to Iko for the interview and thanks Scott for inviting him.👌
Love Iko, first time i saw him was in The Raid..but never knew Julie Estelle was in Raid 2, only saw her in The Night Comes For Us as The Operator. Great interview thanks Scott,
Major props to you Mr. Adkins for your patience and insight. You not only know your stuff, but help bring out the key points Iko was making and let people connect with him better than they might have in other interviews. Really possibly the best Iko Uwais interview ever, cheers.
Martial artists are very humble uts because they are not all about show . They have all because of a lot of hardwork and its their nature to keep working like any other person ❤
Back in 2012 I watched The Raid twice at the cinema during a film festival in Denmark. I was so hyped for it after having read so much about it, watched clips on RU-vid, all the talks about it from Toronto and so on. So when I finally sat in the theater and watched The Raid it was everything that I hoped it would be and even more. The crowd was absolutely invested in the film and everyone clapped and cheered after every fight. It was one of the best cinema experiences I’ve ever had. Thank you Scott and Iko for yet another great interview on The Art of Action 🙏
Iko Uwais, i remember one scene in The Raid that was so insanely brutal and unique i cannot forget it, in the Building he holds someone head and jumps backwards impaling his head on top of the wooden remains of a flat door. And the knife fighting was insane too in that.
The raids success kinda changed hollywood. It showed them and the audiencee just how entertaining an action movie can be. Without beeing cheesy or over the top
Bruce Lee Jackie Chan Scott Adkins Donnie yen Tony jaa Iko uwais Tiger Chen Michael jay white Vidhyut jammwal And all other great martial artists ♥️♥️♥️💟♥️💟💟💟👍👍👍💪💪
Scott Adkins should have been Batman. in China, we see him more as a Batman/ Bruce Wayne material than Ben Affleck. Affleck might have a name but he doesn't fight like Batman nor had this dark aura that is waiting to be unleashed at any given opportunity yet had this good playboy Bruce Wayne who can make lots of women cry.
I just look at this humble guy and his face in this video and keep thinking how he played the character Boyka!! What a talent both of you... Love and respect from Nepal! 🇳🇵
Iko is rumored to play Si Buta Dari Gua Hantu (Blind Warrior from the Phantom Cavern) in Bumilangit Cinematic Universe, a comic book movie based on comic created by Ganes TH in 1967, the film will be directed by the director of The Night Comes For Us, Timo Tjahjanto, the comic itself is based on Indonesian Silat, the project was announced in 2018 but the production is currently in indefinite hold due to the pandemic
@@maxsamuel1253 me too, it's my favorite Bumilangit comic, but like I said in my comment the production of the film is on hold and the director, Timo Tjahjanto is now working on Hollywood remake of Train To Busan, and the other Bumilangit films like Sri Asih and Virgo that's supposed to be released after Gundala can't be released yet anyway, so yeah we have to wait much more longer for Si Buta Dari Gua Hantu movie
Hi Scott, I absolutely love that you got Iko Uwais on here. Any chance you might do separate episodes with Yayan Ruhian or Cecep Arif Rahman in the future?
Fun Fact: Merantau, when released on Indonesian's theater for first time, only handfull of people watch. When news broke, that movie gathered attention in one of overseas film festival, it soon gathering audiences soon, even some people came to theater asked for it
Iko vs Joe in NCFU is one of the most epic fighting scenes in the MA movies, ❤ it, brutal, fatal, so intense...., Scorpion vs Sub Zero should copy that scene since 4 minutes was never enough for the final fight And hoping these two guys meet up in a fighting scene, Street Fighter reboot maybe......
The night comes for us and raid series are my favorite iko movies and what can I say about undisputed movie series simply outstanding both are legends love u both bros
I’m an artist and I use those interviews to improve the fight scenes in my comics/manga, Thanks Scott Adkins, this is usually the type of stuff you should pay to see, We are so lucky.
A Showdown in Little Tokyo reboot with Scott Adkins/Iko Uwais would be awesome. Scott would play Dolph Lundgren's part and Iko Uwais would play Brandon Lee's part maybe Isaac Florentine should direct a Showdown in Little Tokyo reboot with Scott Adkins/Iko Uwais.
In one interview Iko said that back then, he loves soccer more than silat. And dream that he'll be a soccer star and travel around the world in the future. But, his uncle said, "You must kontinyu our family tradition to keep silat alive...and one day you will travel around the world because of silat..." Make me goosebump that all of his uncle words are became reality today....
This is absolutely amazing to see!! The raid 1 & 2 are my favorite martial arts movies of all time! I’ve been doing martial arts since I was 6 years old. This is such a honor and privilege to watch. Wow, thank your so much Mr Adkins for this interview🙏🏼.
