Counting mathematical objects may reveal unexpected patterns of geometrical or algebraic nature. We will illustrate this with three classes of examples: counting points over finite fields and its relation with topological invariants, counting points on transcendental complex curves as a powerful tool in number theory, the unexpected structure behind counting curves passing through a given number of points in the plane.
