Decluttering one day at a time means we only have to focus on today. One thing we want to organize and declutter. One step forward.

Erica, I love watching your videos. I'm a 55 yr old homeschool of mother of 12 children. I'm a tidy person by nature, but you can imagine with 12 children it's been challenging! I found your channel at the beginning of your journey when I was looking for inspiration to declutter my 5 bedroom house in anticipation of moving and downsizing. 6 of our children were on their own so we didn't need so much space. I was able to get rid of over 50% of our things! What a relief! What I love about your videos is that you continue to learn and take us along with you in the "messy middle". You show your real life, not the Pintrist perfect version. You've come such a long way, and you are so good at communicating what you are still learning. I really appreciate all the effort you do to share through videos. Thank you for keeping it real. 🥰

I've been paring down my wardrobe by selecting an item to wear that I normally pass over, and after a day of wearing it I often decide to declutter it - after I wash it, of course!

I’ve been decluttering long enough to realize that mindfully doing my chores every day offers lots of natural opportunities to declutter. Folding clean laundry lets you weed out what is stained, torn, or outgrown. Unloading the dishwasher or waiting for the pasta water to boil gives you a chance to look at all the things in your kitchen cabinets and utensil drawers that you haven’t used in forever. Returning books and movies and games to their shelves is an opportunity to see what hasn’t been used in awhile. Hanging up coats in the closet is a chance to get rid of the ones no one ever wears. Doing a bit while tidying up each day becomes second nature and doesn’t feel overwhelming. I put the still-good things I don’t want anymore directly into a disposable bag or box in the trunk of my car and drop them off at donation when the box is full.

I'm pregnant and Canadian, so I have a long mat leave. Before I was pregnant and back at work, I was on disability leave. I'm so grateful for my work benefits. I don't take it for granted because I know it's the exception. My point is that I created myself a nice work wardrobe for back to work the LAST time I came back from mat leave, and then the pandemic hit! I have about 30 pieces of work-wear that I can't try on and haven't worn for over 2 years. I can't bring myself to let ALL of them go, but last night I challenged myself to get rid of just a few, as well as some maternity clothing for warmer weather. I have no intention of going through pregnancy again after this. 😆 But having half a bar of clothes that I've barely ever worn is SO ANNOYING. They're beautiful, timeless finds from thrifting and I hope some will fit after I push myself through physiotherapy after this baby comes out... I do have some other areas to declutter again. My future baby room's closet was a guest room closet and needs to fit all of the baby things instead of music and spare office supplies, etc. 🙃 The basement storage room also needs some TLC, partially because some things need more specific homes, like hand-me-downs. 😩

Today I went and got rid of extra decorative pillows that I’ve had in the guest room cupboards. I’ve also got a technique that I have a cardboard box and during the week, if I find something I don’t need, I put it in there until it’s full then take it to the thrift store.

On Friday I decided to declutter my kid's shoes. They had them on the stairs and made me crazy because of the number. So it takes maybe half an hour and I throw away half of the stuff, some put to the donation box and on the stairs they have now only two pairs each, shoes that they wear. What a luxurious feeling after a few months of chaos.

I think it is changing the idea of linens to toys makes it okay not to wash every time. Same thing happened when I designated "dress up clothes" rather than just clothes that were only taken out of the closet.

Originally having 7 would have to be folded to fit in that basket. But realizing who wants to fold 7 sheets daily meant decluttering 3 of them. I'm sure 4 can now easily be tossed in (and I'm sure she'll get there!). I believe she just has 3 children... If it were me, i would have kept 3 and donated 4; one per child is good enough!

I've been vacuuming my basement (too many spider webs!) and reorganizing it so things are more easily accessible. Then I spent time putting away all the things that had piled up bc the bins in the basement were too hard to get to. I also finally filled out my children's growth chart. My oldest is 12 so I'm not that behind. 😂 And I've been slowly over years going through 3 large bins of photos (mine, my husband's, and both my mom's and her mom's as they've passed away). I only have 2 photo boxes left to sort. They're packed, but still I'm so close! I haven't hung a single family photo after 18 months in our house and worked all day today getting a gallery wall set up. I finally have a layout and now I need to use the painters tape method and get it up on the wall tonight? I cannot wait until all the bins and frames are no longer shoved into the corner of my living room. 😅

I went through my blankets and I had SO MANY! I had 6 stacks that were 1-3 feet tall. And 40+ pillow cases! I'm having a hard time deciding what to declutter. But I'm thinking I might declutter most of the petroleum based fabrics - fleece and polyester. That'll get rid of about half of my collection. But there's definitely some financial guilt attached to it.

❤ the good enough approach to your videos. Progress not perfection. I’m cleaning and gifting my large barbecue I rarely ever use to a neighbor. Something that motivates me when decluttering is waste. I hate to see things go unused when someone could benefit from it now, and I will benefit by having more space. I try to operate from an abundant mind set. I have enough that I can share.

"...blankets that belong on a shelf..." stood out to me as interesting in the way we associate items to be a certain way, blankets need to be clean to be on the shelf. I believe in function over fancy! Good for you creating a fort basket, I laughed when you considered a bag 😂, to make it simpler on you all to create memories 😊 Thanks for sharing your thought process to Erica 👍

With having fewer linens an basically anything you wash you don’t end up with as much an overload of laundry because you’re out of those items sooner an you stay on top of getting laundry done.

Fort Sheets. Fantastic idea!! If you decide to par those down as well you could set them aside as garden sheets if you live where you have to worry about frost. We did that last year and it makes me happy because I could repurpose them and I always know where they are in the garage when weather decides to surprise us.

I don't blame you for washing the blankets. Blankets gather up any dust particle and are brutal to asthma or allergy prone people. Based on the inhalers in your bag, I assume you would have suffered a lot from "dirty blankets". Sheets are better because they don't have a fuzzy surface, so your instincts were perfect!

I recently switched to my fall/winter wardrobe. I turned all the hangers backwards so I will know what I have and have not worn. Once I get down to the last of the clothes not worn, I will either have to choose one of them THAT DAY or they get donated. It’s an easy way to know what I truly love and want to wear. And this will leave me with a wardrobe of only items I love, use, and wear!!

Thank you so much for sharing! 😊 I spent time going through my kiddos pants last night (they have grown another inch over night), and it felt great! But, I definitely want to go through their toys again in order to reduce the amount of those items floating around the house and making major messes. And, I only remove the over abundance of items that they don't love or use anymore. Sometimes it's easier and less stressful for me to do that without them... do you have any tricks or ideas to help me declutter with the kiddos to teach them about the importance of it? Thanks again!!!
