The Art of Dribbling ! 

It's hard for people who don't play football to get how hard these dribbles are.Most football players struggle to even go past one defender.The fact that some of these players are toying with 3-4+ defenders is crazy for me as a guy who plays football at an amateur level.

Traditionally numbers were reserved for certain roles. In general: number 1 is for the goalkeeper, numbers 2 to 5 are for defenders, 6 to 8 for midfielders and 9 to 11 for forwards. But, it depends on the formation the team plays as we see number 7 for example mostly used for forwards (wingers). As time went on, players got to choose their own number which I think is a cool thing. Still, you'll see this tradition held high.

10 used to be for the most technical advanced player on the team, they mostly play behind the strikers, feeding them balls and scoring themselves.

#10 was, still is to a lesser degree, the default jersey number for most attacking maestros.

The number ten is traditionally associated with the role of attacking midfielder or forward. He is typically the team's most technically skilled player and best playmaker. Best analogy: he is the quarterback of an old school wishbone option offense, or a point guard who is true penetration threat as well as a passer and outside shooter. The number nine is reserved for or associated with the striker position. Strikers are a team's best and most reliable scoring threats. A traditional striker is able to move well in congested space and put himself in a position to receive passes and crossed balls where he is in the best place to score. Best analogy: he is the star running back combined with a deep threat side receiver. A classic defensive number is 4. A four is sometimes called "the destroyer". He is meant to own the defensive middle of the pitch/field, mark the opposing center forward, and distribute the ball to his midfielders and wingers in order to create his own team's opportunity to attack. As another poster mentioned, the position number is more often than not different to the player's shirt number. But, the roles themselves are still defined by number. You will hear people talk about a player being "a classic number nine", a "false nine" (meaning that he may start well forward, then drift back to more of a playmaker role), or a "true number ten".

#'s 9 and 10 will always be worn by the best forwards. Pele and Maradona (2 of the greatest ever) wore #10 which helped popularize it back in the day. It's basically the #23 of the NBA.

Y'all some cool dudes. #10 has been worn by many legendary players, it is an honour to wear but also bears big responsibility. That position is basically forward midfielder, just behind the strikers (can vary depending on the tactical system). A player wearing #10 is usually complete. Passing game, dribbling, shooting and good perception of everyone's position (both teammates and opponents). They are usually creative players, able to "carry" the game when things get rough. #10 is often the captain as well (being the best/most talented or experienced player on the team)

You really should look at the defensive side of the game. It truly shows you what this sport is all about. For an attacking player making mistakes isn't that big of a deal but for a defensive player a mistake can cost you a goal, game or even a championship.

#10 - Playmaker/ attacking midfielder #9 - Striker/ most forward player (goal threat) #7 - Winger/ Skillful, fast or great dribbler #11 - usually the same as #7 but on the other side of the pitch #8 - Central midfielder/ Usually controls the game from midfield #6 - Like #8 but more of a deeper role with transitions from defence to attack

Number 10 is usually the guy you gotta watch for, the most talented, the guy that has the vision and the skill, he can pass, dribble and score. Some examples: Pelé, Maradona, Platini, Zidane, Valderrama and a long etc.... They are the ones that make the magic happens!

Nr 10 can mean different things from club to club,but a common thing is that playmakers gets number 10. But it can also be a pure striker that gets it in 1 club,while a wing can get it in another club. I have also seen deep defensive midfielders with number 10,as well as offensive central midfielders. Its different from club to club,but the most common thing is that a playmaker gets it. A dominant force on the team.

Number 2/3: Defensive player on the wings. Defends but also contributes offensively, with crosses to box interplaying with his partner in the wing. Number 4/5: Defender. A wall, usually strong and resilient. Number 6/8: Heart/engine/organization of the team. Playmakers. Some playing from deep, others venture more forward. Number 7/11/17: Dribbler, usually in lightning quick and a demon in the wings. Would occasionally score, Ronaldo made it a trend to score almost always from the wings. Number 9: Lethal. Scorer. Can be skilled. Number 10: Magical, responsible for creating chances for himself and team. Number ten meant brain of the team.

He mostly plays behind the striker to hook him up and combines with the striker and other players to create goals. You have to be really good to olay these two numbers since they are very difficult positions

Basically numbers are reversed for certain roles.. sure you can pick your own number but many players like to stick with the traditional numbers.. Number 1 is for the goalkeeper, Number 2-5 is for defenders but the centre backs usually pick number 4, midfielders usually pick 6-8 but there are some players who choose 17 like Kevin De Bruyne or someone who chooses number 10 like Luka Modric, Number 9-11 is for the forwards.. it also depends what formation each team plays.. one of the most well known formation is 4-3-3 (goalkeepers aren’t counted in a formation) which means there are 4 defenders (2 centre back, 2 full backs) 3 midfielders (usually one of them is a defensive midfielder) and 3 forwards (2 of them being a winger and 1 striker) wingers/ inside forwards tend to use 7 and 11 like Ronaldo for number 7 or Neymar for number 11 and their role is to cut inside play with defenders and score or assist, or make a run on the flanks and cross it in to the striker.. stikers who are number 9 are usually only focus on scoring as much goals as possible like Lewandowski or Ibrahimovic.. and then there are the number 10s.. they are usually the most technical players on the field.. they usually play as a centre forward in a 433 false 9 formation or as an attacking midfielder.. the best players to wear number 10 are Messi and Maradona.. if you watch them play you’ll notice that they play much deeper than a traditional stiker and the wingers become the inside or inverted forward hence the name of the formation false 9.. they usually assist the most and/or score the most goals like Messi.. the midfielders who choose number 6 or 8 usually control the whole game with their passing and vision like Iniesta, Pirlo and Xavi.. so every number has its role but the player can choose whatever number he/she likes which aren’t taken

A good footballer to look at is Ricardo Quaresma Portuguese like CR7 could have been just as big as him if it wasn't for his attitude but he has done some amazing things with the ball he most known for the robona and outside of the boot shots curling them like people do with the inside of their boot

The #10 is an attackers role, and the role traditionally means someone who plays the spaces between the midfield and the front attacking line. So yeah the #10 tend to be big goal scorers and some clubs reserve the number for someone who is goated. 9 is usually an attacking role too.

10 marks a position which is attacking midfielder in the centre of the field behind the striker. Most attacking midfielders happened to be the most technically gifted players on the field so eventually it devolved into the best player on the team wearing 10 but that isnt always true. 7, 9, 10, 11 are numbers for attacking positions so if you see any of those 4 numbers they are most likley and attacker with high technical ability (highlight reel players)

If you want to react to a goalkeeper then definitely watch Manuel Neuer Highlights. A lot of goalies make incredible saves, but the way he basically played a last defender in his 2014 prime when Germany won the world cup against Messi is great to watch!

The classic numbering of a football team is: 1 - Goalkeeper 2 - Right Defender 3 and 4 - Center Defenders 6 - Left Defender 5 - Defensive midfielder 8 - Point guard midfielder 7 - Offensive wing, but depending on the team's game plan, it can be the offensive midfield. 11 - Offensive winger or second striker (depends on the team's game plan) 9 - Striker 10 - Best player on the team, most of the time he is a midfielder, but there are a lot of forwards too. It can change depending on the team, but this is the best-known classic scheme.

One thing about football that Americans seem to miss: When you're playing basketball or american football "dribbling" past someone is easy compared to football. You are doing footwork while holding a ball or dribbling a ball with ur hands, while with football you have to adjust every little move you do with your feet because not only do you have to get past someone, you also have to bring the ball with you and close to your feet at all times.

Since Pele of Brazil, traditionally the team's best player, usually a midfield playmaker, gets the number 10 jersey... Messi wears 10, so did Maradona, Zidane of France, Ronaldinho of Brazil... etc. Strikers/ goalscorers usually get the number 7 or 9 jersey... sometimes 8, 11 or 21. Goalkeepers start at jersey number 1 and goalie substitutes often get 12 or 22. Defenders get the low numbers 2,3,4,5,6.

You guys should watch the goalkeepers one. Is the hardest and most crude position in football, put some respect on our names brothers! It's an art.

I read thru the comments, but everyone seems to have missed the fact that the No 10 was popularised by the media back in the 60s when they named Pele of Brazil (who wore No 10) as the World's Best Player. It just exploded from that. Other comments in relation to No 10 being the "playmaker" correct; but it all BEGAN with Pele - the youngest ever World Cup winner and goalscorer. He had all of the tricks before anyone else. there's a great RU-vid video showing it.

Numbers in footbal are arbitrary, but if the numbers are distributed in the order the players ocuppy in the field, 10 ends up being the player behind the forwards, who's usually a centre field whose responsibility is to build plays for his team. This requires players that have a good perspective of the game, and who usually have very strong technique. Also, as good players with the number 10 get more well known, the more players who come after them want to have the same number, so the number 10 kind of became a thing for those players. Then you have number 7 which is even more arbitrary because often it's worn by players that can play on both sides (like Ronaldo), but it's also a number that at some point gained traction and players started aspiring to wear it. A good example is Cristiano Ronaldo, when he first started playing at senior level at SCP (Sporting Club de Portugal), number 7 was taken (by Marius Niculae) and he used to wear 17 as an alternative, but as soon as he had the change, he grabed the number 7, and you can be sure that it was part of his conditions to sign for a club that he was allowed the number 7, so much so that he made it his brand.
