The Art of Lighting: 3 Point Lighting Technique | Take & Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

Three-point lighting is a classic portrait lighting set-up for both stills and video work. As the name suggests, you’ll need three lights! After experimenting, you'll learn that there are plenty of ways to use 3-point lighting.
Photographer Gavin Hoey introduces a step-by-step guide for this essential lighting technique. First, he starts with a one-flash portrait in his small home studio. Once that is set, Gavin adds a hair light to create a rim light on one side of his model. Finally, he adds a third light to complete the three-light portrait.
As Gavin demonstrates, the third light can be placed either behind your subject as a background light. However, if you’re after a soft, evenly lit portrait technique, place the third light in front of your subject.
Gavin Hoey is a freelance photographer, writer, and trainer of all things photographic. Gavin has a real passion for sharing his photography and Photoshop knowledge. In 2008, he started recording and uploading video tutorials to RU-vid. His work is regularly featured in photography magazines, websites, and videos.

@@GavinHoey thanks for responding Gav. Well for starters I can say that my biggest problem these days is mixing Rgb tube lights, I’m using 4foot Amaran tubes with flash, Godox Ad200 Ad400 ad600. Trying to get the color as well as flash look has been a daunting task. Then adding atmospheric spray. That’s one I would say is advanced. Not shooting at sync speed changing iso etc for desired effect. Thank you again for all you do.

As usual this is a brilliant demonstration, not just how to take the shots but the way you construct the lighting environment. I have a question (or rather, a quandary) - I am ready to buy all new equipment (replacing old gear), but I'm stuck whether I get 2 x AD600 Pro + 1 x AD300 Pro to complete my 3 flash setup. One of the main uses will be outdoor sports team photos. I need the consistency between the 2 main lights (which are essentially fill as I have the team with their back to the sun). However I will also be doing a lot of portrait work, and as you demonstrate here the AD300 Pro is great, and you create wonderful light at just 1/8th. And I over-powered with the 600 Pro, or should I really consider 2 x 400 Pro + 1 x 300 Pro? The difference isn't just light, it's money! Heeeellllllp!

Great video as always. Do have a question about when you used the third lighting as background light in the first half of the video. Do you prefer to have the halo around her shoulders - like in the video - or do you try and have it slightly higher up so it's more around the head? Also how was it using the Sony a7 IV?
@user-yz6ej2qq2k
@user-yz6ej2qq2k 3 месяца назад
I already own an AD300 pro (thanks to you) and wonder if there is a benefit to adding an AD200 or AD100 like you had in the video. Any thoughts?

Thanks for many great videos Gavin. Been following you for many years. One thing that puzzles me is why your beautiful models always have to take different poses with this empty, sad look. Why does it have to be this way? Sophie and Chloe have some amazing smiles and it's a shame models today don't use this opportunity more often. I guess that's how models are taught to be these days, but it's a shame.

Good for you Gavin! As for the Sony A7 IV ISO, I have noticed that I can push my camera to ISO 1600 with no appreciable degradation in image quality. So given that, I can use ISO 400 and 800 then? Any thoughts?
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey 2 месяца назад
ISO is part of the exposure that will affect the results of both the amount of ambient light you capture AND flash so increasing your ISO can have unintended consequences. That said, that might be exactly what you want to do... Photography can be frustratingly short of definitive answers. 😉

Gavin: great video as always. I echo a few of the earlier comments .... Sony! Wow! Is this a permanent change and you are no longer affiliated with OM Digital Solutions / Olympus? Also, I believe the base ISO for a Sony A7 IV for photo is ISO 100. Any reason why you chose ISO 200?
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey 2 месяца назад
Lots to unpack in your comment (and all good questions) No, not a permanent change but an opportunity came up to try Sony for a short period and I took it. Other cameras / brands may follow. ISO 200 means my flashes work half as hard and the batteries last twice as long. I stepped back from being an OM System ambassador late 2023 but still have a good relationship with OM SYSTEM and normal OM cameras will be back in my next video 😉

Hi, Gavin. Great video, as always. But there is one question that annoys me: Is it really necessary that the model adopts that set of antinatural poses? To me, they look as overplayed as the gestures of the actors and actresses of old day films. And it's not a problem of this particular video. Actually, it's something that I too often see in many videos (not only yours) about lightning or even about models posing.
