In May 2022, the Victoria and Albert Museum, in conjunction with The Stephen Sondheim Society, hosted an afternoon exploring the challenges and joys of working with material written by the composer-lyricst Stephen Sondheim. In the first part of the afternoon, theatre critic Matt Wolf chaired a fascinating panel discussions with West End performers Janie Dee, Rosalie Craig and Julian Ovenden about their experiences of working with Sondheim and on his shows.
Filmed by Ray Mansell on behalf of the The Stephen Sondheim Society.

Thank you so much for this video. It is absolutely fascinating to hear the actors talk about their experiences performing Sondheim’s pieces, and also their memories of meeting him and even working with him. Julian Ovenden, in particular, reflected profoundly on his experiences and obviously has a genuine appreciation and respect for Stephen Sondheim’s works and legacy. I appreciated listening to everyone’s comments and thoughtful contributions.
