Tonight‘s feature is a deluxe Marx freight set in Canadian Pacific livery. It’s uncertain to me whether it was pulled by a 666 diecast or 1666 plastic steam locomotive. Either way, this is a great set, very hard to find, with all matching Canadian Pacific tender and freight cars.

Truly a rare Marx set, one of the rarest in Deluxe Plastic. Nice to see it running. How lucky to have 2 boxcars!

I have this set. Got at a yard sale for $25 in the late 70s. It has a 666 for power. Unfortunately had no original box.

Thanks for sharing the rare Canadian Pacific set. In excellent condition too, I have one of the red Canadian Pacific gondolas but I don't remember which set that I was testing I don't think my gondola is from a Canadian Pacific set. I also have a white stripe 666 with the side smoker, but derails constantly from either a wheel not installed straight onto axle or the axle itself might be warped or bent. Anyways my 666 seems to be identical to yours. Do you think my 666 is from a Canadian Pacific set? Side smoker seems rare in the 666, I thought those came only with the 1666?

Great question. Since I did not get the set new, that cannot be proved. Volume III shows that the plastic 1666 was the correct locomotive, but the catalog photo on David Farquar’s Silicone Underground website clearly shows a diecast 666, most likely without a white stripe. We base a lot of what we know on common occurrences which can be misleading. Since there aren’t a lot of these sets around, I cannot be sure. Perhaps others can weigh in. Thanks!
