A review of my drafting setup - I missed a few things in Part 1 and setting up for your actual drawing lesson.

Wow, this is an awesome series. I've loosely self-taught myself this art throughout my life, and as a craftsman of miscellaneous things, the drawing stage has always been my favorite part of the making process. I'd like to thank you for taking the time to run me through the fundamentals. I've never been exposed to anyone who was formally trained in the art, so these videos have been very informative and enjoyable. Thanks very much!

Good stuff Phil. Draughting 101. I notice you omitted the Rotring ink pens and the scalpel. (And yes, that's how we spell Draughting!)

I'm excited about this. I just pulled out the old box of drafting supply's, I am set up better than I thought. I picked up a Pickett 24" T -- square in the last year at a thrift store. Looks new. Later on I need two clean up and fine tune grandpas old drafting machine. I will still have to by a drawing board, no room for a table. O ya I even have a notebook teacher.

Enjoyed Phil, brings back memories of Vo-tech school 53 years ago taking Design Technology (drafting). I bough my own Mutoh model L drafting machine which I took with me to my first two places I worked at as a machinist/designer. ATB, Robin

Perhaps the paper is yellow so the light reflected into your eye is dampened and provided less contrast of your markings so you don’t see a residual ghosting of your previous markings when moving onto the next blank area for new markings. I imagine this is vital particularly when joining markings

Plough Guides are available even in non-snow regions in major hardware stores, usually right near the mailboxes. Labeled "Driveway Markers" or similar. Great source of solid fiberglass rod. :-)

as far as i ever learned, the primary reason the print sizes were as they were was so they could always be folded up to fit into an envelope. either a standard envelope or a larger document envelope.

I have sudden interest in drafting compasses, I am looking around to get a good quality set. We have seniors in the office who come from the hand drafting days and being the younger one in the team I began my drafting life on Revit and recently AutoCAD. I sometimes joke with my seniors telling them that I'm going backwards in time while they're going forwards, because they see me reading drafting books from the 1970's. Looking forward to your lessons :)

Hi Phil, this brings me back to my youth, I loved mechanical drafting. My first class was in 7th grade and through high school and a few college classes, although by then I was correcting the instructor's mistakes. One thing that I noticed that you didn't have in your supplies to have was drafting powder? I was always using it to clean up my drawings. I realize this is an old video so I don't know if it's worth mentioning anymore.

Right, the drafting powder, the only thing I don't have from back then.

On big drawings I could not reach the top of the drawing. I learned to letter upside down, and turn those big ones 180 to work on them. All those tools and more I carried in my briefcase till I taught my self AutoCad 10.

"Size A" is confusing when you have the "DIN A" series of paper sizes too.

No french curves? It's really hard to capture all the detail of a mould tool in 2D. Ten sheets of elevations, sections and details, and still some of it is up to the toolmaker's interpretation. Yay for 3D CAD!

Where can you get replacement sharpening band/belts for the sharpener?

What's the name of such a sharpener with sandpaper and sponge? Can't find any vintage or new ones at all.
