About Shine A Light In The Dark
When the sunlight is just a little too bright let me be your moonlight. When you are lost in the dark and have not gazed upon the sun in a long time, it is just way too bright. In fact, after a long period of darkness, the sun can really hurt your eyes; however, moonlight is the perfect in-between. It can also help your eyes to readjust so that the sun is no longer too bright.
Music is also a form of moonlight. Music can provoke thoughts, feelings, and emotions in ways we have never allowed ourselves to consciously feel. Music can also create a space for many of us to feel seen, heard, and understood in a world that sometimes seems determined to misunderstand us. However, music seems to just get us as it allows us to unite and feel as though at least in that moment we are not alone.
However, we may never have been as alone as we initially thought. Many of our favorite artists have endured similar struggles. Often, we only see their success but not the blood, sweat, and tears endured behind the scenes to rise to where they are today; however, it is in that hardship that they have gained so many pearls of wisdom that could ultimately help others become more success on their life's path. Thus, making their stories extremely powerful as they shine a light in the dark in order to inspire, empower, guide, and give hope.
However, this made me curious as to how an artist's healing journey influences their music as well as their listeners. Does their healing journey impact their music? If so, how does it impact their music? Is the catharsis that the artist experiences shared with the listener?
Ultimately an artist's healing, pain, anger, sadness, and joy can be transferred from the artist to the listener; thus, impacting the listener's healing. As a counselor I am limited by the time and space; however, music isn't. You could have a full-blown group therapy session at 3 am with your friends as you listen to your favorite artists speak to your soul.
Please join me on my weekly podcast as I interview artists and learn how their healing journeys have impacted their music.
