side note on the knockback immunity - for whatever reason, it sometimes doesn't apply when you pop phlog while being healed. if you've ever been knocked out of your taunt despite being firmly on the ground, it was because of this bug.

You could call it a UFO (Ubered Flaming Object) it’s also good because the phlog is an alien weapon. The UFO Pyro

I've done this a few times over the years, but mostly by accident. It was always: - Be playing around as dickhead phlog+thruster pyro - Accidentally fly around a corner right into a crowd of enemies instead of a short distance away, landing on someone's head - Panic and reflexively activate the crits - Successfully accidentally phlog cancel - Still die in about 2 seconds

so *you* were the one crushing my hopes and dreams in uncletopia and absolutely carrying. impressive

It's weirdly fascinating how lister, the messiah of the Dragon's Fury, is now obsessed with the flamethrower that could be considered the arguable complete antithesis to that weapon.

I was playing on Uncletopia with you the other day. Holy SHIT was that an infuriating game. Regardless, I respect the skill that comes with this tactic...despite it feeling a little OP.

This is also very effective in Mann Vs. Machine, as robot heads automatically slide players off, making the jetpack/detonator very useful with the phlog, and the extra 2 seconds of crits are very good for tank busting.

I don't think this will change too terribly much, phlog cancelling has been around for ages, and people have had plenty of time to practice the art in mvm. I feel like we would have seen people doing it more by now. Fingers crossed I suppose.

This is a deeply cool strategy, but I don't think you'll see most pyros running it or that pyro is suddenly going to start dominating pubs. Not only because it requires a ton of practice, but because, like any strategy that relies on surprise, it shouldn't work more than once or twice. A team with any sense will be watching for flying pyros after the first phlog cancel, much like with trolldiers. Still, this absolutely exudes style and could be a game winning trick if the enemy doesn't see it coming.

I'm genuinely surprised that I've never seen a phlog cancel in an actual match before, I've seen it in a few MVM videos before I think but besides that this is the first time I've seen it be used on real people lmao I hope this does actually make people do this more because I just kinda want to see it happen more often, it seems like one of the coolest techniques in tf2 in my opinion

the incredible part is the 2 seconds is perfect for eliminating anyone in mid-range where they can out-damage you

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand The Phlog. The weapon is extremely situational, and without a solid grasp of the scorch shot most of the players will die without a single kill. There's also the phlog being called a "crutch weapon" which is deftly woven into his ablities being superior than any of other weapons- its design draws heavily from Greg Broadmore illustrations, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depth of this weapon, to realise that its not just a good weapon- its says something about tf2's core design. As a consequence people who dislike The Phlog ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humor in Pyro's existential catchphrase "Mmph mmmph," which itself is a cryptic reference to Daniel Kahneman's Award winning novel Thinking, Fast and Slow. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Gabe Newell genius wit unfolds itself on their computer screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂

Phlog Cancelling is also really useful for MvM Pyro especially on Giants and Tanks

This is like the equivalent to Market Gardener for Pyro except it is deadly as hell because it can mow down and entire team.

Great, now I gotta worry about pyros flying through the air, landing on my head, and burning me and half my team alive with crits WHILE being invulnerable to damage and knockback for at least a couple weeks. Thanks lister! XD

As someone that hated the phlog when it was overpowered, (2015 phlog gave full hp, crits and uber longer than the taunt), I'm entirely fine with this and hope it stays in the game.

If you can manage to get enough kills without dying, then pull this move off you've earned the right to be the God of fire for 2 seconds. It's just so hard to pull off that if you do this then it's skill and luck, not an exploit. It's more of a cursed secret feature, both for the pyro trying it and the other team.

If I had a nickel for everytime a tf2uber made an excuse to use the phlog for an extended period of time I would have 3 nickels, which is not much but it is weird its happened 3 times.

Another important note, you can still airstrafe if you hold only W. When you hold W and aim while moving horizontally in the air, you will orbit around the thing you're aiming at. But only if you aren't turning too fast, because it's a lot like A and D airstrafing when it comes to how sharp your turn can be.

I always loved doing this. I imagine it like one of those scenes in cartoons where a bug lands on someone's head and they have to try and stand perfectly still for their friend to try and swat it, but they just end up hitting them instead.

This is impressive, especially the amount of clips you got of succesfully performing the cancel. Seems to me like you got very consistent at this, despite what you said at the end of the video. That said, I think it would be fair if this was nerfed a bit haha. For performing this maneuver, getting the uber seems deserved. Maybe even the 2s additional time as well. But it would be fair if the knockback immunity was removed when canceling, that part is just too OP. I honestly hope this move is addressed in a patch, but not in a way that completely destroys it. You might even want to contact the TF team with this video and make some suggestions, before they catch wind of this in the wrong way. What do you think? Overall very well edited and pleasantly explained video btw. :) So complete too. The only thing you forgot to add is that in risky situations you can still opt for a regular phlog taunt, which is already pretty powerful, if less rewarding.

I actually like this tech. Its decently hard to pull off so it isn’t like people will abuse it to high hell, but it also makes an otherwise pretty under average weapon good. It may be a tech from the 12th ring of hell, but its a tech.
