About TWEWY Art and Development:
The World Ends with You, developed by the same team behind the Kingdom Hearts series, took inspiration from various sources during its creation. The game's development began during the production of Kingdom Hearts II and the conclusion of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for the Game Boy Advance, with input from Jupiter. When Nintendo announced the Nintendo DS, Square Enix requested the team to develop a game specifically for the handheld system.
The creative team, which included Tatsuya Kando, Tomohiro Hasegawa, Takeshi Arakawa, and Tetsuya Nomura, had the opportunity to experience the DS during an event in 2004. This led them to envision a version of Chain of Memories with card game elements on the bottom screen and an action RPG on the top. However, they wanted to make the game unique to the DS and introduced the idea of the dual-screen battle system. They explored different gameplay options for the top screen but ultimately settled on a card-game approach.
During the development process, the team made adjustments to suit different audiences. They modified the game's tutorials to reduce information overload, allowed tutorials to be skipped, and implemented the "Active Encounter" system to avoid excessive grinding. While they couldn't fully integrate the ability to scan non-playable characters' thoughts, they managed to incorporate various other mechanics.
In terms of graphics design, the team opted for two-dimensional sprites instead of three-dimensional models to differentiate the game and capture their vision. Background art director Takayuki Ohdachi used skewed and angular images of Shibuya to create visually interesting backgrounds that matched the game's atmosphere. Character designs, handled by Tetsuya Nomura and Gen Kobayashi, were made to reflect the Tokyo setting, with outfits designed based on each character's personality.
Hasegawa designed the Noise creatures, aiming to convey human emotions through recognizable creatures. The representation of the Noise required meticulous sprite work and rotoscoping to ensure they fit the game's style. The game's setting in Shibuya was carefully recreated, with the team conducting "location hunts" and duplicating the city's layout. Real-world landmarks were retained while renaming stores and buildings for copyright reasons. The accuracy of the representation has led to fans visiting Shibuya to compare the locations in the game with their physical counterparts.
Overall, The World Ends with You showcases a unique blend of gameplay, graphics, and setting, making it a distinctive and immersive experience for players.

I don't really understand why people don't vibe with it, I vibe with it instantly and spent two weeks on that game doing just that, despite me not playing games for a while. I thought it was awesome. I thought it was mostly a marketing issue, since they didn't hype the game up at all, but I have several friends who played TWEWY who tried NEO and didn't like it that much. I don't really get it, I loved NEO.
