The Ash Grove----A traditional Welsh Song (with lyrics)

A man visits the graveyard where his lost love lies buried.
Down yonder green valley where streamlets meander
When twilight is fading I pensively roam
Or at the bright noontide in solitude wander
Amid the dark shades of the lonely Ash Grove
'Twas there while the blackbird was cheerfully singing
I first met that dear one--the joy of my heart
Around us for gladness the bluebells were springing
Ah! then little thought I how soon we should part
Still glows the bright sunshine o'er valley and mountain
Still warbles the blackbird it's note from the tree
Still trembles the moonbeam on streamlet and fountain
But what are the beauties of nature to me?
With sorrow, deep sorrow, my bosom is laden
All day I go mourning in search of my love
Ye echoes! Oh, tell me,where is the sweet maiden
"She sleeps 'neath the green turf down by the Ash Grove"

Thank you so much for you kind comment. I knew the lyrics because we used to sing it at school over 60 years ago. I thought it was a joyful song because I didn't understand the lyrics as a child. I find it a haunting song now but, as you say, still lovely in it's way. Good luck with your ragtime!

I also used to sing this in school, over 70 years ago now. It was my favorite song. Your grade 6 teacher wasn't Miss Jones, perchance, an exchange teacher from Wales? The classic standard, Have You Met Miss Jones, could have been written as a tribute to this delightful warm-hearted young woman (who, I suspect never married). She was not only my favorite teacher but virtually the only one I liked, in my long and unproductive public school career. And the distaste was mutual. Miss Jones was the exception. She not only liked me but I was kind of her favorite pupil. I suspect it was because she learned from my parents, at the only school social function they ever attended, that I was addicted to classical music, on radio and disk. Thank you for uploading this. I has awakened fond memories.

Such a pleasure hearing it now, especially poignant for me is your Welsh inflection as my late husband was Welsh. You sing beautifully 😍! I used to sing hymn tune Ash Grove in my aunt Debbie's church ⛪️ all the time ⏲️. It's such a beautiful song 🎵. At first, I thought it sounded like We Wish You A Merry Christmas 🎅. I got the tune stuck in my head when I went to school 🏫 the next day and started humming it. My teacher told me what I was humming and I told her, "it's just a song that I sang in church yesterday. The tune is Ash Grove 👌. It's been stuck in my head ever since yesterday." And then my teacher said, "I believe you. It's such a beautiful song 🎵." When I got home 🏡, I hummed Ash Grove to myself when I went to my room.
