This is going to be really depressing. So depressing that even I, as a Lancastrian feel some sympathy for Yorkists.

I remember when 'Emmerdale' was Emmerdale Farm and in so far as soap operas go, it was at least somewhat traditional and a bit wholesome. Obviously that had to go as the more modern attitude encroached. I never sat down to watch the programme, being a lad in the 70's and I can't say my Mum ever did with any regularity either but with the telly on in the afternoon (school holidays), I inevitably caught glimpses of it. Back then the problems and scandals on the show were about lambing and sheep-dipping and tractor breakdowns and the events at the local church and village hall. The dark parts of the show were probably about the economic worries of rural farming. From what I gather, Emmerdale. having further to fall, has indeed fallen the furthest. Coronation St and Eastenders were always going to be more degenerate, being set in large cities. Emmerdale, within the context of soap opera TV, is a snapshot of the damage that has been deliberately wrought.

The Chapeltown race riots were a direct consequence of the Yorkshire Ripper investigation and the general attitudes of police toward black men in the area (where one of the earliest - initially - identified victims was taken/found). Just so you know, Chapeltown WAS a shithole turn of the millennium - I'm a big guy who knows how to handle himself. I didn't grow up in the nicest part of Leeds... at that time, I would ONLY have driven through Chapeltown during the day - with the doors FIRMLY locked. It HAS got a LOT better... Mostly because the drug dealers have got rich and moved to the "nicer" parts of town (same for Gipton and Halton Moor... though Halton Moor is still a sink-estate...) AFAIK, Spencer Place and lower Roundhay Road (near town) remain places where ladies ply their trade of an evening...

Football was once tribal, town vs town, but ultimately has become a diversionary dead-end culture for the English working classes as it now has politically motivation injected into it with BLM and rainbow flags. Englishmen need to reclaim then honour their rich history, heritage and identity and stand proud in its greatness against all oncomers including their very own people. Do something! Anything! Pick a pay homage to a great historical Figure/Warrior/King then eulogise them with yearly celebrations. Even Guy Faulks night is being replaced in many parts with Halloween festivities instead now because it is seen as divisive. Practice Culture or lose it, simple as.
