THE ASSASSIN | Jack Tatum The Hardest Hitter in NFL History
Jack Tatum was one of the most formidable hitters in the NFL, acting as a true Pro Bowl-worthy safety. Tatum terrorized opponents with his punishing blows. His intimidating presence helped transform the Oakland Raiders into one of the most feared teams of his era. Recognized by NFL Films as the sixth hardest hitter in NFL history, Tatum was selected for three Pro Bowls and holds the record for the longest fumble return in NFL history, a feat that was only matched 28 years later.
For many, Tatum's career will only be truly complete when he is included in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. However, many believe that this honor will never be granted to him due to a tragic incident during a preseason game when one of his hits left New England Patriots receiver Darryl Stingley paralyzed from the neck down.

Tommy Nobis was a better football player than every one of those players mentioned...by a considerable margin. He played for the expansion Atlanta Falcons and his contemporaries...Butkus, Nitschke, Hendricks and Mike Curtis all said he was the best linebacker in football. Penalized for playing on a horrible team, Nobis has largely been forgotten. Shame that the "Old Timers" committee keeps nominating him and never actually electing him into the HOF.

Jack Tatum did not intentionally paralyze anybody. There wasn't even a flag thrown on the play. Tragic yes, but certainly not Jack Tatum's intention or fault. Preseason game and even in practice, you play with the same intensity as you do in a regular game. Yes, he should certainly be in the Hall of Fame. RIP Jack.

There was a interview with some of Earl Campbell's teammates, of whom all of them stated in the locker room after the game, that Earl admitted being knocked out by The Assassin Jack Tatum during their clash and he (Earl) didn't remember just rolling on forward unconscious. Earl also told Coach Bum Phillips that he NEVER again wanted to face Tatum afterwards. Earls' teammates confirmed this. I wish I could find that interview. And Tatum was NOT knocked out during that clash as some people have been led to believe. Tatum OWNED Campbell and owned the field of defense. Truly an Assassin!

What happened to Stingley was a serious and unfortunate accident. The physical impact of football can be a danger to all players at all levels. Jack Tatum played the game with passion and toughness. The type of character you would expect from all players today. The rules of the sport were very different back then. The techniques of tackling was also different. The greatness of Jack Tatum will always be compared to that of Dick Butkus, Ted Hendricks and many others. Yet these icons are in the HOF. If those individuals with the hitting force they used back then, had been met with the same unfortunate incident as Jack Tatum. Would they also be left out of the HOF... It's time to allow forgiveness to be given to this player and allow him into the NFL HOF.

When I watch the replay of the Stingley play I see nothing unusual about it. There was no penalty. If it hadn't just happened to injury Stingley's spine it would have gone unnoticed. It was a tragedy for Stingley, but it is unfortunate that it blemished Tatum's reputation. He was one of the best defenders of all time and a definitive example of the NFL in the 70's. He should certainly be in the HOF, but they would never have the courage to provide that kind of recognition to a man with a cloud over his reputation, even if it was not deserved.

I am shocked that this video is about Jack Tatum, and nobody had mentioned that Darrell Stingley not only never walked again he likely died a premature death at 54 because of the spinal injury that he received for that hit. The hit was so gruesome to watch, that most of the times when it's discussed it is never shown. That hit, even though decades later, went in to the "No hitting a defenseless player" rule that is now in effect. So, the next time you want to complain that the NFL has gotten soft, remember the late Darrell Stingley. By the way, Stingley's nephew, Darrell Stingley, is playing today in the NFL honoring his late uncle.
